60c – Year of the Dragon
Calligraphy is a traditional Chinese art form, and the Chinese character for ‘dragon’ expressed on the 60c stamp is from the Xi Xia Song stone monument. Carved in the ‘Lishu’ calligraphy style, the character has an authoritative feel that reflects the strength and confidence of those born in the year of the dragon.

$1.20 – Paper-cut Dragon
Paper-cutting is a much-loved Chinese folk art that became popular shortly afterpaper was invented. It is used for many Chinese weddings, ceremonies and festivals, and the skilfully crafted paper-cut dragon n the $1.20 stamp indicates prosperity, amiability and celebration.

$1.90 – Dragon Lantern
Chinese lanterns are an important part of Chinese New Year, and the Chinese Lantern Festival marks the end of the 15-day Chinese New Year celebrations. The dragon lantern featured on the $1.90 stamp was used in the Auckland Lantern Festival, which annually celebrates New Zealand’s multicultural society.

$2.40 – New Zealand Icon – Dunedin Railway Station
Situated in the South Island, Dunedin was one of the earliest settlements for Chinese immigrants in New Zealand. Over the centuries New Zealand has welcomed many different cultures and this is depicted by the pair of swallows on the $2.40 stamp, which in the Chinese culture symbolise hope, blessings and happiness in the land.

Red and gold, vibrant dragons have swept through Auckland, bringing good fortune in the Chinese New Year.

More than 20,000 Aucklanders are expected to celebrate the Year of the Dragon at the Chinese New Year Festival and Market Day at ASB Showgrounds today.

Aromas of sticky buns, dumplings and octopus skewers thickened the air.

The crowd was delighted by acrobatics, shadow puppets and 200 stalls selling traditional Chinese delicacies, food and drink, arts and crafts.

The Year of the Dragon is a particularly auspicious year and is meant to bring happiness and good fortune.

Wendy Diffey was among the huge crowd who brought  their children to the cultural event.

“It was just a something a bit different for the kids and a chance to for the see the Prime Minister,” she said.

Prime Minister John Key opened the festival, although looked slightly peculiar standing in his black suit as two dragons swirled behind him.

The Year of the Dragon would hopefully bring some good fortune to New Zealand after a year of disasters, including the Christchurch earthquakes, he said.

Key also acknowledged China as New Zealand’s second largest trading partner during his speech.

“The relationship between New Zealand and China has never been stronger.”

He finished with a mention of his infamous folly at Chinese New Year celebrations in 2009.

“I managed to fall off the stage and break my arm in three places, which is somewhat embarrassing.”

He commended the organisers for setting up extremely safe stairs this year.

“If I fall off it I’ll just be confirming I’m an idiot.”

Labour Party leader David Shearer was among a number of politicians who attended the celebration.

Office of Ethnic Affairs – Year of the Dragon to be celebrated at Parliame

Year of the Dragon to be celebrated at Parliament

The Chinese Year of the Dragon will be celebrated at Parliament on 8 February 2012 at an event hosted by the new Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Hon Judith Collins.

The dragon is considered to be the mightiest of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs and festivals welcoming the auspicious year are expected to be especially well attended and embraced.

The Prime Minister, Rt Hon John Key will join around two hundred people at the function.

They will witness the traditional lion dance, in which Mr Key will place a red envelope in the lion’s mouth as a symbol of good luck, prosperity and to dispel evil spirits.

The Director of the Office of Ethnic Affairs, Mervin Singham says celebrating cultural festivals such as Chinese New Year reflects New Zealand’s strong and positive relationship with its ethnic communities.

Ms Collins says the Chinese community adds strength to the New Zealand economy through its entrepreneurial spirit and its links back to the economic power house of the Asia Pacific region.

“The traits associated with this year of the Dragon include being innovative, enterprising, flexible, self-assured, brave, and passionate. These are exactly the traits that all of us need to build a bright and prosperous future.”

2012 also marks the 40th anniversary of New Zealand’s diplomatic relationship with China.

It is a relationship that was cemented when New Zealand became the first western nation to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement with Beijing in 2010.

Mr Singham says engaging with ethnic communities helps inform New Zealand’s relationship with its trading partners and fosters trade links and economic growth.
