Iran to Sell 5,000 Megawatts Electricity to India, Press TV Says

      http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-03-05/iran-to-sell-5-000-megawatts-electricity-to-india-press-tv-says.html

Iran plans to export 5,000 megawatts of electricity to neighboring India, state-run Press TV reported, citing Energy Minister Majid Namjou.

The Persian Gulf nation wants to sell power instead of natural gas because electricity sales will be more cost- effective, the broadcaster said, without elaborating. Iran had a total generating capacity of 53,000 megawatts before 2009, according to the report on Press TV’s website.

International sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program are threatening a $9.5 billion annual trade in crude oil between India and Iran, the second-largest producer in OPEC.

Bhutan likely to cut power export to India
      http://indianpowersector.com/2012/04/bhutan-cut-power-export-india/

…Power import from Bhutan is progressively declining as availability of surplus electricity in the neighbouring country thins due to its rising consumption.

Bhutan is expected to export only 5,480 million units of electricity to India in 2012-13, compared to 6,500 million units in 2010-11 and 5,586 million units in 2011-12 According to sources in the Indian government, the falling import quantum is due to reduction in availability of surplus power in the country.

Bhutan is estimated to have potential to generate 30,000 mw electricity from its hydro- resources. Indian public sector companies like NHPC and NTPC are investing in hydropower projects in Bhutan in the hope of exporting surplus power to India. Tala hydropower plant is an example of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Bhutan has expressed interest to buy power from India. Following that, the government has asked PTC India to negotiate terms and conditions for power export to Bhutan. “Bhutan needs base-load power. We are in talks with Bhutanese officials to export power,” said Tantra Narayan Thakur, chairman, PTC India….

Bangladesh envisage regional power trade with India, Burma to ease electricity crisis
      Posted on | mei 30, 2011 | No Comments

      http://www.nl-aid.org/continent/south-asia/bangladesh-envisage-regional-power-trade-with-india-burma-to-ease-electricity-crisis/

…The government led by Shiekh Hasina is contemplating to import power from neighboring India and Burma. The prime minister’s representative held parleys with the two neighboring governments in the last two years.

The government is planning to import 500 MW of electricity from India by 2013. Another 500 MW of electricity would be imported through north-west route by 2018. Other imports of 250 MW, 750 MW, and 1000 MW would be made possible from north-east Indian states.

Presently, Burma does not have enough facility to export power. However, Burma has agreed to install two hydropower plants aiming to export 500 MW of electricity to Bangladesh from the troubled Rakhine state by 2017.

Meanwhile, the import of 250-MW of electricity from India has already missed the schedule in last March. The signing of the deal with India will be furthered delayed as the governments of the two countries failed to reach any settlement over the dispute regarding transmission of electricity….
