Pope Benedict XVI today asked for forgiveness from God and from the victims of sexual abuse by priests, “particularly the abuse of the little ones.”

Speaking in Italian to a sea of 15,000 white-clad priests attending Mass in St. Peter’s square to celebrate the end of the Year of the Priest, the pope addressed the scandal of abuse by priests at the beginning of his homily.

“We too insistently beg forgiveness from God and from the persons involved, while promising to do everything possible to ensure that such abuse will never occur again,” Benedict said.

The pope has publicly expressed sorrow and condemnation on a number of occasions in recent weeks for the sexual abuse of minors on the part of priests, but voicing regret at a celebration of priests was especially forceful and symbolic.

Pope asks forgiveness for church cleric abuse

VATICAN CITY — Addressing the clerical abuse scandal from the heart of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI begged forgiveness Friday from victims and promised at a mass to “do everything possible” to protect children.
While symbolic, Benedict’s pledge failed to satisfy victims groups who said promises were useless without a clear-cut action plan to root out pedophile priests, expose the bishops who protected them and change the Vatican policies and culture that allowed abuse to continue.
His comments came during a mass celebrated by 15,000 priests at St. Peter’s Square marking the Vatican’s Year of the Priest — a year marred by revelations of hundreds of new cases of clerical abuse in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere, as well as cover-ups by bishops and evidence of long-standing Vatican inaction.
It was the first time Benedict had spoken of the crisis from St. Peter’s Basilica, the center of the church.
Benedict implied the devil was behind the timing of the scandal, saying the Year of the Priest was supposed to have been a year in celebration of the priesthood and encouragement for new vocations…

Victims groups who had been hoping for a papal mea culpa and clear-cut action plan to protect children weren’t satisfied.
“A promise is nominally more helpful than an apology. But promises are usually easy to make, hard to keep and broken often if there’s no oversight or penalties,” said Barbara Blaine, president of the U.S. victims group SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

Pope Asks Forgiveness for Clergy Sex Scandals; No Word on Bishops

    http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/06/11/pope-asks-forgiveness-for-clergy-sex-scandals-no-word-on-bishop/

…..That the observance was overshadowed almost from the start by reports of sexual and physical abuse of children by clergy — going back decades and across Europe — was to be expected, Benedict said, because a celebration of priests “would not be pleasing to the ‘enemy,’ ” as he put it, a reference to the Devil….

“We too insistently beg forgiveness from God and from the persons involved, while promising to do everything possible to ensure that such abuse will never occur again,” Benedict continued. He also promised that “in admitting men to priestly ministry and in their formation we will do everything we can to weigh the authenticity of their vocation and make every effort to accompany priests along their journey, so that the Lord will protect them and watch over them in troubled situations and amid life’s dangers.”…

“The root cause of this horrific and on-going clergy sex abuse and cover-up crisis remains the nearly limitless power of bishops. . . . There must be a world-wide Catholic policy against clergy sex crimes and cover-ups that is widely enforced. And we still don’t have it.”…

The Pope wants the victims to forgive the Roman Catholic Church??? More empty rhetoric from a Pope who is managing this scandal more like a politician than a spiritual leader. If the RCC was truly repentant, it would change its ways, and sell all the property the institution has amassed since its’ founding and use it to pay damages to the victims.

“Benedict implied the devil was behind the timing of the scandal…” This is an absurd assertion. Light was shined into darkness by the press, that is what was behind the “timing” of these revalations.

God @#$% pedophile priests and those who criminally facilitated thier crimes, and I mean that literally.
