Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London,[1] and often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower, officially named Elizabeth Tower, as well.[2] Elizabeth Tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower.[3] It celebrated its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009,[4] during which celebratory events took place.[5][6] The tower was completed in 1858 and has become one of the most prominent symbols of both London and England, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city.

The Elizabeth Tower (previously called the Clock Tower) named in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in her Diamond Jubilee year[7] – was raised as a part of Charles Barry‘s design for a new palace, after the old Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire on the night of 16 October 1834.[8][9] The new Parliament was built in a Neo-gothic style. Although Barry was the chief architect of the Palace, he turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower, which resembles earlier Pugin designs, including one for Scarisbrick Hall. The design for the Elizabeth Tower was Pugin’s last design before his final descent into madness and death, and Pugin himself wrote, at the time of Barry’s last visit to him to collect the drawings: “I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all the designs for finishing his bell tower & it is beautiful.”[10] The tower is designed in Pugin’s celebrated Gothic Revival style, and is 315 feet (96.0 m) high (roughly 16 storeys).[11]

The team start at 6am and work through to past midnight to ensure Big Ben delivers the time and famous ‘bongs’ which welcome in the New Year across the country and are broadcast around the world.

The Great Clock of Westminster was first started on 31 May 1859. It has become a national symbol and is renowned the world over for its accuracy, which is always to within one second. Many people refer to the Clock Tower as ‘Big Ben’ although it is actually the nickname of the largest bell within the Tower.

Big Ben rang out triumphantly to announce the end of the First World War as people celebrated in the streets. Its voice, communicated via radio during the Second World War, offered reassurance as bombs fell and sirens sounded. Along with the Clock Tower, it has become a national symbol of pride, stability and strength for millions.

The clock mechanism consists of three trains, the rods and gears, which drive the hands and the two brake shafts and ‘fly’ fans, which control the rate of descent of the strike and chime weights.

At the top of the Clock Tower is a lantern, which houses what is known as the Ayrton Light. This stands about 76 metres from the ground, above the belfry and is lit when either House is sitting after dark.

The Ayrton Light was named after Acton Smee Ayrton, MP, the First Commissioner of Works in the 1870s. It was installed in 1885, several years after the Clock Tower was completed. It was originally gas-powered, but was converted to electricity in 1903.

The Victoria Tower is the square tower at the south-west end of the Palace of Westminster in London, facing south and west onto Black Rod’s Garden and Old Palace Yard. At 98.5 metres (323 ft), it is slightly taller than the more famous Elizabeth Tower – Big Ben (formerly known as the Clock Tower) at the north end of the Palace (96.3 metres (316 ft)).[1] It houses the Parliamentary Archives in archive conditions meeting the BS 5454 standard, on 12 floors. All 14 floors of the building were originally linked via a single wrought-iron Victorian staircase of 553 steps, of which five floors survive.

The main entrance at the base of the tower is the Sovereign’s Entrance, through which the Monarch passes at the State Opening of Parliament. On top of the Victoria Tower is an iron flagstaff from which flies the Union Flag or, when the Sovereign is present in the Palace, the Royal Standard. The flag used to be flown only on days when either House of Parliament sat, but since January 2010 it has been flown every day.[2]
