Bonfire Night in Rye, Sussex

For the first time in several years I was fit enough to reach a Sussex Bonfire Societies event, at Rye in Sussex. There is a strong tradition of celebrating Bonfire Night in the area plus the deaths of Protestant martyrs in Lewes during the reign of Queen Mary I.

Several thousand people converged on Rye for the torchlight procession, huge bonfire and fireworks display to raise money for local good causes. It was a good natured family event.

Sunday November 4, 2012

Everybody celebrates on this day widely known as Bonfire night which is held on 5th November, and everybody knows the story of Guy Fawkes the man who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, but a man by

the name of Robert Parsons a Jesuit priest born on 24th June 1546 the son of a blacksmith in Nether Stowey, just a few miles from Bridgwater was, one of the brains behind the gunpowder plot. At the time who

Guy Fawkes, Catesby and three others carried the blame, Parsons who was never held to account kept well out of the way. Parsons made his way to Rome where he was rector of the English college whilst serving the Pope.

May 1604. Five men meet in a London pub to discuss killing the King of England.

Pub plotting

It was Robert Catesby’s plan that brought five conspirators to the Duck and Drake Inn in May 1604. Catesby was the brains behind the plot against the king. And he gathered a group of like-minded men, including Guy Fawkes, to help him.

They knew King James I would be attending an important ceremony in the Houses of Parliament on 5 November 1605. That’s when they would strike.

The gang planned to tunnel beneath the House of Lords chamber, where the king was to attend the State Opening of Parliament. There, the men would plant enough gunpowder to blow up the chamber, and the king along with it.

Why did the plotters want to kill James I?

All the plotters belonged to the Catholic church, and believed they should have more freedom to practise their religion. They also shared an impatience with the rule of King James.

When James became the King of England (and Scotland) in 1603, many Catholics were hopeful he would treat them more favourably than the previous monarch, Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth had decided that England’s official religion would be Anglican (also called the Church of England), and under her rule Catholics were treated very badly.

Disagreement between religions wasn’t new. Fighting and argument in England went back many years.

When James I became king, the situation for Catholics got worse, as many were persecuted for their beliefs.

How to kill a king

All the conspirators had previously been involved in other schemes which tried to win religious freedom for Catholics. In the Gunpowder Plot, the members of Catesby’s band each played their part.

Thomas Percy secured a house next to the House of Lords. It became the gang’s headquarters where they are believed to have dug a tunnel to the foundation walls of the House of Lords.

======

The legacy of the plot

To this day, people across the UK celebrate Guy Fawkes Day with fireworks and bonfires as a reminder of the failed attempt to kill King James.

And the monarch’s Yeoman of the Guard still search the cellars of the Houses of Parliament before each State Opening … just in case

Robertsbridge Bonfire Night 2011 – a set on Flickr

Robertsbridge Bonfire

After a few years break due to ill health I was again back in East Sussex for a Sussex Bonfire Societies event, this time Robertsbridge bonfire night. Bonfire Night is traditionally November 5 in the UK and celebrates the failure of Catholic Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. But in Sussex there is a local tradition of marking the martyrdom of Protestants burned during the reign of Catholic Queen Mary so the two historical events are combined.

Many towns and villages have a bonfire society which organises a torchlight parade, music and fireworks and many of these groups like to visit and support each others events as well. So the Sussex ‘bonfire season’ currently starts in late September and runs through until yesterday (November 19). Robertsbridge is traditionally last and many visiting societies try to make it to this particular event so there is always a good turn out.

Robertsbridge event is now a set: www.flickr.com/photos/barryslemmings/sets/72157628064609255/

Each Sussex Bonfire Society event has a different character – Lewes’ is traditionally a bit ‘wilder’ while Robertsbridge has a more family-orientated feel. This year’s Robertsbridge was going well until a ground mist rolled in (increased by the smoke of a thousand torches and fireworks) and even before the bonfire was lit we had trouble even seeing what was going on. The Osama Bin Laden effigy painted on a mock “News of the World” front page was hardly seen when it blew up in the mist, which was a shame.

Of course none of this mist and fog helped the poor teenaged girl who sneaked off for a quick ‘wee’ in the water-filled ditch next to the bonfire site and found herself brightly lit up when someone suddenly popped a flare nearby. My, how quickly she got dressed! The water-filled ditch was also a source of amusement to many as thunder flashes were lobbed into it where they exploded and threw gouts of water 25-feet in the air. Truly no frog or newt was safe from a depth-charging last night!

The fireworks, when they finally went off, were brilliant but none of us could see them as the smoke/fog was now so dense that the visibility was down to nil and the best you could do was listen to them and watch the cloud occasionally light up in different colours. Still… it was a great night out!

Roll on next year.

Guy Fawkes Day

A Brief History Of Guy Fawkes Day – TIME  11/05/08

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1856603,00.html

This year, revelers will gather across Britain — most notably in Lewes, a town once known as a hotbed of anti-Catholicism sentiment that throws one of the British Isles’ biggest conflagrations — and in nations ranging from South Africa and Canada to New Zealand and Australia. Guards will also perform the annual search —more pageantry than precaution—of the Houses of Parliament to ensure no would-be Fawkes is lurking. Though the animosity and rituals may merely be symbolic at this point, the celebrations still burn brightly.

Guy Fawkes Night: The Life and Death of Guy Fawkes

http://www.novareinna.com/festive/fawkes.html

By order of King James, “gentler tortours” were first to be administered to Fawkes, since torture was contrary to common law unless authorized by the reigning monarch or Privy Council. Eventually, on November 7, Fawkes’ spirit was broken. He confessed his true name and that the Plot had been confined to five men. The following day, he recounted the events of the conspiracy without naming names…but, on November 9, Fawkes identified his fellow conspirators, having heard that some of them had already been arrested at Holbeche. Fawkes’ final signature (a barely legible scrawl) is testament to his suffering. There is no record of exactly what forms of torture Fawkes was subjected to, although it is almost certain that manacles were employed and, most probably, also the rack. It would appear that he was also confined for some period of time to the infamous “Little Ease” located in the Tower of London…a cell so small that it was impossible to stand, sit or lie down properly with any degree of comfort.
