Shakespeare’s Birthplace

The half-timbered house where William Shakespeare was born in 1564 is Stratford’s most cherished historic place. It is the most frequently visited of all the tourist places. Descendants of the dramatist lived there until the nineteenth century, and it has been a place of pilgrimage for over 250 years.
Open daily, tours start in The Birthplace which contains an acclaimed exhibition of the poet’s life, William Shakespeare: His Life and Background They then carry on through the house, which is furnished in period style with many historic manuscripts and books. Finally the tour ends outside in the celebration garden. Stratford Upon Avon 008

Holy Trinity သင်းချိုင်းဂူကShakespeareရဲ့ပုံ

The Holy Trinity Bust

The Holy Trinity Bust was commissioned after his death by his son-in-law and placed above his grave in the Holy Trinity Church. His widow was still alive then, and we can’t imagine that they would have placed a false image of him over his grave! There is general agreement that this is the likeness of Shakespeare, looking rather old and bloated, but that’s life: we can’t expect our hero to fit the fantasies we may have about him. He was once a young man and wrote Romeo And Juliet when he was thirty. Wouldn’t it be a treat to be able to see what he looked like then?

No Sweat Shakespeare ‘s conclusion is that we should stick with the Droeshout engraving for a general idea of Shakespeare’s appearance, and go to Stratford, and visit the Holy Trinity Church for a true impression of what Shakespeare looked like shortly before his death.

William Shakespeare Biography – Facts, Birthday, Life Story – Biography.com

http://www.biography.com/people/william-shakespeare-9480323?page=1

William Shakespeare was baptized April 26, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. From roughly 1594 onward he was an important member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company of theatrical players. Written records give little indication of the way in which Shakespeare’s professional life molded his artistry. All that can be deduced is that over the course of 20 years, Shakespeare wrote plays that capture the complete range of human emotion and conflict…

William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 (baptised) – 23 April 1616)[nb 1] was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist.[1] He is often called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon”.[2][nb 2] His surviving works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays,[nb 3] 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, two epitaphs on a man named John Combe, one epitaph on Elias James, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.[3]

Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as the King’s Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare’s private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.[4]

Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613.[5][nb 4] His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the 16th century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.

Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. In 1623, two of his former theatrical colleagues published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare’s.

Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century. The Romantics, in particular, acclaimed Shakespeare’s genius, and the Victorians worshipped Shakespeare with a reverence that George Bernard Shaw called “bardolatry“.[6] In the 20th century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed, and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

This is the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the site where William Shakespeare and close members of his family are burried inside.

It is in Old Town near a bank of the River Avon.

2010 is the 800th anniversary of the present building which dates to 1210.

Information from a leaflet I was given after paying £1.50 to go to the section to view Shakespeare’s Grave.

There has been a church on this site since at least 713 when a Saxon monastery was built here. The present building dates from 1210, with the oldest sections being the tower, transepts and nave pillars. The North and South aisles were added in the 1300s and the Chancel in the late 1400s.

  • DEEP (Database of Early English Playbooks) is a searchable database “…of Early English Playbooks allows scholars and students to investigate the publishing, printing, and marketing of English Renaissance drama…”
  • The Canon. A chronological listing of the poems and plays. This is an area that will be developing to include materials on dating the works.
  • The Classic Text: Traditions & Interpretations. An exhibit of certain Shakespearean texts with a discussion of the textual tradition from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
  • The Shakespeare Database Project.
  • A Shakespeare Dictionary by Stephen Sherman.  “…an extremely selective and personal dictionary.”
  • Hartmut Ilsemann.  Statistics of plays by William Shakespeare. An heroic effort.  Frequency distributions can be found for each play using the site’s menu system.
  • Wonderful, brief introductions with synopses of each of the plays can be found at the Folger Shakespeare Library site.

An original, illustrated html edition of the complete Tales From Shakespeare, by Charles and Mary Lamb. If you are unfamiliar with the tales, they were originally published in 1806 (dated 1807) and are prose renderings for children of 20 of the plays. The tragedies were written by Charles and all the others by Mary Lamb. Though originally intended for children, they are revered works in their own right and serve as wonderful introductions to the plays. In their table of contents they are given in their originally published order, and below are given in alphabetical order:

The standard HTML Complete Works sites are:

  • in the USA, the MIT Shakespeare Homepage. The Complete Works from the Tech. HTML editions of the  works are laid out nicely in table format.
  • in Australia, Matty Farrow’s  the Complete Works site, with a good glossary and an excellent search engine.

[These, and almost all the Complete Works sites on the Internet are based on a very generic text released to the public domain in the early 90’s called the “Complete Moby™ Shakespeare,” based initially, it is believed, on The Stratford Town modern spelling edition of 1911 (see the bibliographic entry for the MIT site from SHINE).  Where the works are based on another text, it is noted below.]

Other notable HTML and text Complete Works sites:

  • Open Source Shakespeare – concordance, keyword and advanced searching, statistics, the text of the plays, find characters, and a search of all the poetry as well.  Remarkable.  Based on the Globe edition.
  • The Works in HTML editions from Wikisource, without version attribution.
  • PlayShakespeare.com, “the ultimate free Shakespeare resource,” primarily a presentation of the texts with some ancillary materials.  “All of the texts on this site come from the First Folio of 1623 (and Quartos where applicable) and the Globe Edition of 1866 and have been re-edited and updated.”
  • Renascence Editions of the Complete Works in PDF and HTML versions, University of Oregon.
  • The Complete Works from the etext library at the University of Adelaide.
  • The source for the Project Gutenberg texts of the Complete Works, and the Gutenberg listing of doubtful and spurious works.  Project Gutenberg also mounts a Complete Works interface at this location.
  • A no-frills, well designed portal to standard html versions of the complete works (the thirty-seven canonical plays, not Two Noble Kinsmen), with a brief biography on the index page, and the ability to search within any of the individual works or across all, from  ReadPrint.com.
  • Another HTML edition of the Complete Works mounted by the Pasadena Shakespeare Company.  Notes and other introductory materials are not provided.
  • The Complete Literary Works of William Shakespeare from The Classic Literature Library…..
