Much to learn

Steven Chu was invited to visit Norwegian power plants when he met with Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Riis-Johansen earlier this autumn. This coming Saturday those plans will become reality as Secretary Chu travels to the Ulla-Førre hydropower scheme.

The U.S. Secretary of Energy will visit Norway’s largest pumped-storage power station at Saurdal and the country’s largest power station measured in capacity, Kvilldal. Power plant manager Bjørn Sandvik believes Chu can learn a lot.

Thorough introduction

Steven Chu and his entourage was flown by helicoptre over the beautiful Ryfylke nature, and got to see Norway’s largest reservoir, Blåsjø. This is the reservoir that feeds the destination of the trip, the Ulla-Førre plant. Plant manager Bjørn Sandvik wished the Secretary welcome, and showed him Norway’s largest Pumped Storage Station in Saurdal, as well as the power station in Kvilldal.

The visit was arranged after Secretary Chu earlier this year said that he wanted to learn more about the use of hydropower in conjunction with other renewable energy sources. And Statkraft’s Pumped Storage Station represent a technology that suits the american plans.
– This is a very interesting technology, and it may play an important role in the future, Secretary Chu said to the press.

Huge American potential

Steven Chu has a good reason to visit Statkraft’s modern hydropower stations. The US has a huge unexploited potential for hydropower production. According to the American Department of Energy, the country can produce 70 gigawatt, which is about the same as 70 nuclear power stations, or 100 coal fueled power stations.

If the US decides to go for a large development of hydropower stations, this will have a great impact. The country is responsible for 20 per cent of the world’s energy use, and 86 per cent of the power comes from oil, coal and gas.
– We want to switch to renewable energy, and preferrably solar power, Secretary Chu says. – But the technology to capture solar power is not here yet, and that is why hydropower is so important.

The complex includes the artificial lake Blåsjø, which is made by dams around 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) above the sea level. The hydroelectric power station in the complex are Saurdal, Kvilldal, Hylen and Stølsdal, operated by Statkraft.

The Alta Power Plant’s dam, by Sautso, is one of the tallest arched dams in Norway. The dam’s arched form and upper termination into the mountainside is quite an impressive construction. It is a massive, double-curvature arched dam. The crown of the dam is roughly four metres wide. From the top, one has a magnificent view to the north down the canyon and southward of the elongated lake Virdnejàvri. From the base of the dam (at the bottom of the canyon) to crown of the dam it measures 110 meters.

Pasvik River runs northwards from the great Lake Enare in Finland and has its outlet in Bøkfjorden at Kirkenes. Shortly after leaving Enare, the river runs into Russia and after 30 km it nears the border between Norway and Russia. Statkraft is engaged in substantial development projects, most of them outside of Norway. Our goal is that all projects should contribute to create value and be implemented in a socially and environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.

Follow-up of corporate responsibility

All project development in Statkraft is based on internationally recognised guidelines and standards, of which the International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) standards for sustainable behaviour play a key role. The IFC requirements have been implemented in Statkraft’s project management system. This ensures systematic assessment of how our corporate social responsibility is discharged through the project process. Statkraft also works to develop a standardised methodology to secure a systematic evaluation of corporate responsibility thoughout the project process.

Below are presentations of two selected development projects with associated challenges and results relating to corporate responsibility.

-Hydropower is one of the best solutions if you both want to increase energy production and at the same time reduce carbon emissions, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said today, greeting Statkraft’s hydropower project Kargi.

Three hydropower plants in Turkey

Kargi will be Statkraft’s second hydropower plant in Turkey, one of the fastest growing energy markets in the world. When finalised in late 2013, it will deliver 470 GWh, equivalent to the electricity conmsumption of 150 000 Turkish homes. At present, Statkraft is operating the Cakit hydropower plant in the south of Turkey and the construction of Statkraft’s third hydropower plant in Turkey just started in December 2011. When finalised, the three hydropower plants will generate almost 2 TWh annually.

Turkey is already a big and competent hydropower nation, but strong economic growth and increasing population generates an increasingly larger demand for energy. In combination with a lot of new hydropower projects and a deregulated and liberalised power market, Turkey is an important focus area for Statkraft.

In 2009 NGI was engaged in research and development and the design and construction of new dams, as well as in the safety evaluation, risk assessment and strengthening of dams, on four continents.

NGI’s expertise in dam engineering was in demand in Asia, Africa, Europe and North and South America in 2009. Review and safety evaluation for two masonry dams have been done in India and for one of Sweden’s large embankment dams. In China, NGI was engaged by the UNDP for a review of damages and lessons learned from the catastrophic Wenchuan earthquake in May 2008. The earthquake caused the death of 68 000 people, and destruction of buildings, roads and other infrastructure.

In Poland, NGI is engaged in the design and safety review of Europe’s largest tailings dam for the copper industry. And NGI is doing a risk analysis for a planned 185 meter tailings dam for the gold industry in Romania. In Uganda, NGI is engaged in hydropower development on the upper reaches of the Nile by Lake Victoria.

The Norwegian innovative asphalt core design and construction is now being used for a dam in Brazil, and the same method is considered used for a number of new dams in the Amazon region. NGI is also engaged in the design of a number of new asphalt core dams in the Province of Québec, Canada.

Hydropower adds up to nearly 19 percent of the world’s production of power. In Norway it represents approximately 99 percent of the total electric power produced. Norway is significant producer of hydropower, as well as in the international context. The amount of power produced in Norway is the highest in Europe, with a sum of 120 TWh per annum.
