    Ancho Poblano Hot Pepper

One of the most popular and common chiles for use in Mexican cuisines, the Poblano bears heart-shaped fruits up to 4″ long. Also known as Ancho (when dried), this variety is an improved strain with fruits that ripen from green to a chocolate brown. Mildly hot flavor. 7

    Anaheim Chili Hot Pepper

his chili was selected to have a milder, fresher, flavor than most chilis, with thick meaty walls, and large peppers up to 8″ long. This is a very popular chili in southwestern cuisine and you will see it roasted, fresh, dried, and canned. It is most often used when it is dark green, but it will become hotter and turn bright red as it matures. Anaheim Chilies are prolific bearers. The Anaheim Chile Pepper is a classic, open pollinated pepper variety that matures in 80 days. Vigorous bushy upright plants grow 24″ to 30″ tall and bear late in the season. Anaheim peppers are named after the city of Anaheim in California.

    Black Hungarian Hot Pepper

Highly ornamental and useful in the kitchen. Tall 3′ plants produce abundant yields of 4″ long fiery fruits similar in shape to jalapenos, but shiny black ripening to red. Green foliage is highlighted by dark purple veins and beautiful purple flowers. Great flavor.

    Cayenne Large Red Thick Pepper

One of the most widely used hot peppers in cooking, the cayenne is a delicious and hot red pepper growing to 6-8″. Has an intense and hot flavor, about 30,000-50,000 on the Scoville index.

    Chinese Five-Color Hot Pepper

(a.k.a. Chinese Multi Color Pepper.) A fantastic pepper with amazing vibrant colors. Watch as the fruits ripen from dark purple to cream, yellow, orange and then red. Conical fruits adorn the plant and when in varying stages of ripeness make a dazzling ornamental. Foliage is dark green, blushed with purple. The fruits themselves are quite hot and useful for any standard pepper purpose. The plants also are great for containers inside. Just pick a few any time to liven up your salsa. Open pollinated. 80-90 days.

    Cow Horn Hot Pepper

A large thick pepper resembling a cow’s horn. Fruits can reach 10″ by an inch or more wide, with a curved shape. Originally from New Mexico, this pepper features a mildly spicy flavor. Ripens from green to red. 75 days. Open pollinated. Start early indoors and transplant well after last frost. Grow seedlings at 62 F night temperature and 70 F day temperature. Lower temperatures permanently reduce plant productivity.

    Habanero Orange Hot Pepper

100,000 – 350,000 on the Scoville scale. The classic Orange Habanero is one of the hottest peppers in the world! “Heat registered in BTU’s!” Originating in the Yucatan in Mexico, this heirloom pepper is commonly used for sauces consumed only by the most intrepid of hot spice-lovers. Late maturing pepper has fruits with thin walls and lantern shape averaging 2” x 1”. Matures to orange color that looks too hot to even touch. Easily container grown, or as an annual. 100 days. Open pollinated. This extremely hot pepper takes about a month to germinate at soil temperatures of 70 degrees.

    Habanero Red Hot Pepper

100,000 – 350,000 on the Scoville scale. Much like the orange Habanero, this red version of the classic pepper shares its exceedingly hot flavor. Fruits grow to 1-2″, ripen to red, and have a hidden fruity flavor beneath the intense heat. Easily container grown, or as an annual. 100 days. Open pollinated This extremely hot pepper takes about a month to germinate at soil temperatures of 70 degrees.

    Hungarian Yellow Wax Hot Pepper

Long, banana-shaped waxy pepper used for frying, stuffing, or for pickled peppers. Ripens from pale yellow to deep golden orange to cherry red. These peppers start out green with almost no heat and very mild pepper flavor. Then the yellower these peppers become, the hotter they become and the stronger the flavor. Very productive even in cool weather. Can be harvested at various maturities. Heat varies among strains; HMOS strain is spicy but not overly hot. Excellent pickler. 1.5-5.5” fruits.

    Jalapeno Hot Pepper

This is the classic Jalapeno used for nachos and poppers. Plants are productive over a long season. This heavy-bearing little plant will keep you in great eating for months to come! Just 3 to 4 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches wide, these cone-shaped, thick-walled fruits are borne in great numbers on very vigorous plants. They are ready to pick when dark green, delivering a wallop of pure heat! 5,000 Scoville units.

Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Hot Red Pepper
    and
Scotch Bonnet Jamaican Hot Yellow Pepper

100,000-200,000 on the Scoville scale. A very popular and blazingly hot pepper closely related to the Habanero. Very compact plant with an abundance of thin skin hot peppers. Fruits ripen to red and grow to about 2″, with a Habanero shape but with a ridge around its middle. The fruits have a delicious smoky-fruity flavor. 90-100 days. EXTRA HOT!

    Korean Hot Pepper

This heirloom has the exact amount of hotness and bright-red color to make perfect, pickled peppers, Kimchi, stir-fry, and pepper-flakes. If you have tried making Kimchi or cooked dishes but couldn’t get the right balance of heat, flavor, and rich color, try this. The real greatness of this pepper is in its earliness to turn red in cool conditions and its enormous yields. No, really. So many peppers you won’t know what to do with all of them. Dries easily.

    Red Cherry Hot Pepper

Prolific and very hot. Cherry shaped pepper to 1-2″. Mildly hot flavor, excellent for cooking and pickling. Fruits are plump and have a faint spicy flavor. HOT

    Tabasco Hot Pepper

30,000-50,000 on the Scoville scale. This is the pepper used to make Tabasco sauce. It was introduced to the country in the 1800’s from México and is still going strong. The peppers are 1 1/2-3” long and are held upright on the plants. They ripen from green to yellow to orange to red.

    Thai Hot Pepper

Small peppers, big attitude! Mounded 8″ plants covered with 1/2″ tabasco-type fruits ripening from green to a rich deep red. Averages 200 fruits per plant. If picked clean, a colorful second crop will set just in time for your holiday decorations. Perfect for container growing. 85 days from transplant. Extremely HOT!

Peppers can be grown all year long in containers. It is suitable for apartment dwellers and gardeners who live in cool regions where the number of growing days are limited. All peppers are perennials, and make nice house-plants if grown in potting soil in 2-3 gallon pots, and taken indoors when the nights drop into the 40s.

The açaí palm (Portuguese: [aˌsaˈi] ( listen), from Tupi-Guarani asaí;[2] Euterpe oleracea) is a species of palm tree in the genus Euterpe cultivated for its fruit and hearts of palm. Its name comes from the Brazilian Portuguese adaptation of the Tupian word ïwaca’i, ‘[fruit that] cries or expels water’. Global demand for the fruit has expanded rapidly in recent years, and açaí is now cultivated for that purpose primarily. Euterpe edulis (juçara) is a closely related species which is now the primary source of hearts of palm. [3]

Euterpe oleracea is mostly native to Brazil and Trinidad and northern South America, mainly in swamps and floodplains. Açaí palms are tall, slender palms growing to more than 25 m (82 ft) tall, with pinnate leaves up to 3 m (9.8 ft) long.[1][4]

          PLANTING DEPTH: 1/4″
WHEN TO PLANT: 8 weeks before last spring frost
START INDOORS: 8 weeks before last frost
          GERMINATION: 14-21 Days
          PLANT OUTDOORS: 12-24″ Apart
          LIGHT: Full Sun
          Germination Rate: 94%

          Germination
          Please watch the videos below.
Estimated germination time under optimal conditions: 2-3 weeks.

          How To Grow
Start seeds in small containers from 8-10 weeks prior to the last frost date. Plant seeds approximately 1/4-1/2″ deep in moist, well drained potting soil. Most standard soil mixes are suitable for pepper seeds. Soil temperature must be kept at 75-90F for proper germination. Cool soil, particularly at night can inhibit or significantly delay germination. Additionally, overly warm soils, well above 90F, can inhibit germination and provide ideal conditions for seed rot. To keep soil temperature warm, start seeds indoors, in a greenhouse and/or use a seed starting heat mat. Keep soil moderately moist, though not overly, dripping wet. Water soil when the soil surface just begins to dry. Allow proper air circulation for containers.

Once seedlings have sprouted, keep in small containers until a few sets of leaves have developed. Transplant to larger containers or outdoors. If transplanting outdoors, make sure to harden off seedlings by exposing them to only filtered sunlight for up to 1-2 weeks. Thin plants to 3-4 ft and rows to 6-10 ft.

Store Seeds: Store seeds away from children, sealed in their packaging in a cool, dry, dark place, or in a fridge. Never store them in a freezer as the sudden temperature drop is likely to kill them. Don’t leave the seeds in direct sunlight as the heat generated may kill.

This tropical night-bloomer flower can never go unnoticed in any pond. This is a water lily deep crimson red or pink or purple in color. It blossoms in the evening twilight. This beautiful bright flower floating in water looks most mysterious against a dark background. The tropical lilies are larger than the hardy lilies and in most cases, the colors are more intense than the hardy lilies. The flowers are 7” – 10” in size. Each flower has 19 – 20 petals and a faint but pungent smell.

      Germination

I’d recommend to soak the seeds in a glass of water until they sprout (change water every 12 hours) or use the “Paper Towel Method of Germinating” method.

      Paper Towel Method of Germinating
Place seeds on 1/2 of the paper towel, fold over seeds, wet paper towel, place in ziplock bag, leave unzipped, wait for tap roots then use toothpick to place in starter pot with soil. Keep the paper towel wet.

      How to grow:
      1) Prepare for planting. Sprout tomato seeds in small containers, preferably 4″ or smaller. In-ground germination is not recommended. Use a standard potting mix that is well drained. Start seeds in containers approximately 8 weeks prior to the planned set-out date. Plants should ultimately be transplanted to the garden 1-2 weeks after the expected date of last frost.

      2) Plant seeds. Plant seeds 1/4″ deep in the soil. Cover with soil and water carefully. Over watering can cause fungal growth which leads to seed rot. Excess water can also bury seeds deep in the soil where they will not be able break the surface. Water when the soil surface just begins to dry. Multiple seeds can be planted in a single starter container, but should be thinned once seedlings appear so only a single plant remains. Seeds do not require light for germination but some light source should be provided for seedlings once they emerge from the soil.

      3) Germination. Soil should be kept consistently warm, from 70-85F. Cool soils, below about 60-65F, even just at night, will significantly delay or inhibit germination. Additionally, overly warm soils, well above 90F, can inhibit germination and provide ideal conditions for seed rot.

      4) Care of seedlings. Once a few true leaves have developed, seedlings should be slowly moved outside (if sprouted indoors) to ambient light. Care should be taken not to expose seedlings to direct, scorching sun so plants may need to be hardened off via slow sun exposure. Hardening off can be done using a shaded or filtered light location, as well as protection from strong winds, rain or low humidity. Hardening off time varies, but can take 5-10 days.

      5) Planting out.

Plant in the ground once danger of frost has past and daytime temperatures consistently reach 65F. Plants can be spaced as close as 24″ apart.
Unlike most plants, tomatoes do better if planted deeper than they were grown in containers. Set them in the ground so that the soil level is just below the lowest leaves. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root system.
To reduce root disease risk, don’t plant on soils that have recently grown tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or eggplant for at least two years.
Mulch plants after the soil has warmed up to maintain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Tomatoes need a consistent supply of moisture. If it rains less than 1 inch per week, water to make up the difference.
Keep soil evenly moist to prevent blossom end rot. This can also help prevent cracking when fruit absorbs water too fast after heavy rain following dry conditions.
Catfacing (misshapen, deformed fruit) is caused by incomplete pollination, usually due to cold weather. Don’t rush to transplant until weather has stabilized and soil is warm.

Store Seeds: Store seeds away from children, sealed in their packaging in a cool, dry, dark place, or in a fridge. Never store them in a freezer as the sudden temperature drop is likely to kill them. Don’t leave the seeds in direct sunlight as the heat generated may kill.

The Finger Lime is a rare Native Lime tree. The fruit is extremely unique, looking like a small cigar. The pulp is light pink in colour and resembles caviar. Good flavour and a high yielding variety. Fresh delightful flavour and crunchy texture, very delicate red pearls. Collectors seeds, blood red fruit.

        Cultivation techniques:
        – Please put them 1 night in the fridge chiller (5 degrees celsius) before planting out,
        this will improve germination.
        – In its natural habitat the finger lime grows as an understorey shrub or tree up to 6 metres in height on a range of soil types.
        – Unusual brown, cigar shaped fruit, 1-1.5 inches in length. The fruit ripens early autumn. The fruit produces a caviar like pulp.
        – The plant does best in full sun. It will need at least 5-6 hours of light daily.

Watch Out for Scams for Roses and Rose Seeds

With all the hype bouncing through eBay on selling rose seeds many innocent customers are getting ripped off.
There are a few things you should know about buying roses and rose seeds.

First of all rainbow roses do not exist. They are dyed.
Secondly, black and blue roses do not exist. They are also dyed.

With those two quick lessons we can continue on.

    Rose Seeds: Beware
There is nothing wrong with buying or selling the rose seeds in general.
The problem with buying rose seeds is that new rose propagators are not aware that rose seeds do not come true (with the exception of old antique, rugosa and a few other native roses).
With that being said, it’s impossible to have a certain type color of rose seeds.
There is no way to know what colors, shape, size or habits a rose seed will have until it has germinated, bloomed and been monitored for at least two growing seasons.

DO NOT purchase any rose seeds promising a particular color.
The most common rose seeds I see scamming the Internet is purple, blue, black and rainbow.
Yes, some are actually selling (with real buyers) the unique, florist dyed rainbow roses.
Unfortunately this will be impossible to recreate even with the right conditions because it has nothing to do with genetics.
Simply a few bottles of dye.

    Purchasing Roses:
Do not purchase any blue, black or rainbow roses. They do not exist.
Also do not purchase any purple roses unless it is Ebb Tide.
Ebb Tide is the only true purple rose. Angel Face, which I personally own, does have hints of purple but is more mauve than anything.
When I see someone posting these ‘rare’ colored roses or seeds I do report them and post feedback on the item in hopes that others will see the comments and not purchase them.

I enjoy growing roses and sharing cuttings, tips, and more but I hate to see someone getting ripped off by scam artist!

(Don’t forget to think about the other side of coin) 😉

    Tulips Tuesday – 12 August 2014
    Nienke
    August 12, 2014
For this week the readers of the Tulips in Holland facebook page voted the color Purple to be the favorite tulip color! This week we choose the purple double tulip with the wonderful name Shirley for our main photo.
Lots of favorite tulip colors this week. From red to white, dark purple or black and multi colored tulips.

We had also a request for rainbow tulips, unfortunately they don’t exist yet.

So we had a rainbow rose. Have a wonderful Tuesday today and see you all next week for tulip Tuesday.

    http://www.examiner.com/article/how-are-rainbow-roses-created
    How are rainbow roses created?
The argument in the rose realm is that the newest genre of rose, the rainbow rose, is painted rather than grown. With multiple colors adorning each petal, the rainbow rose appears to be a tie-dyed rose that makes a beautiful bouquet. These types of roses look like they’ve been dyed to create the multiple colored petals. I have been after a bush since a couple of years ago when I first heard of these new plants. Out of all of the roses I’ve seen on the market, this one stands out beyond all of the heirloom roses, red roses, black roses or any other species of rose bush.

Since I had first spotted the beautiful roses, I have done hours of research to find out more about how I could get a bush or two of my own. I had checked through many forums and read articles from the specialists and professionals in the business. I found that many rose enthusiasts had questions as to whether the roses are fake or whether they are painted or dyed instead of naturally grown with so many colors. Human beings have manipulated the growth and breeding of plants for years, including simple cross-pollination to a complex procedure in gene splicing. This can improve the quality and yield in crops, developing plants that can withstand extreme environmental conditions and to develop food sources that are resistant to the onslaught of insects, viruses, fungi and bacterial growth.

At times this breeding can be purely for aesthetic purposes, to create flowers that are more easily marketable and are “prettier”. Thus the birth of the rainbow rose.

The pictures of the roses have not been messed with in any way. The rose has not been bred to produce the colorful petals, per se, but have been injected with natural pigments into their stems while they are growing to create the multi-colored petals. This technique was introduced by Dutch flower company owner Peter van de Werken.

The dyes are produced by natural plant extracts that are absorbed by the roses as they grow. A special process will control how much color reaches the petals. The stalk is treated with natural pigments to make each petal a different color. The pigment is absorbed by the plant and will travel to the petals where it can change their hue.

The first attempt was to spray the flowers, however that did not work. Then dye was used, and with about six months of trial and error, they got it right. The beauty of the Rainbow rose can be categorized as neither real nor fake, as the injected dyes are natural, but the colors are manipulated by man. A bush or two placed in a garden along with the other types of roses we normally see in a rose garden would be a rose gardeners dream, but as for now will not happen. Along with the heirloom roses and red roses glowing with bright colors, a rainbow rose bush would be a perfect addition. Maybe at some point in the future, we will see bushes with injected dyes to assist the colorful splendor of the roses as they bloom but for now it’s simply a vision of beauty to be seen in vases.
