Putin, Erdogan agreed Trump’s Jerusalem decision bad for region: report
BY MAX GREENWOOD – 12/07/17 01:49 PM EST
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a phone call on Thursday that President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital will undermine peace and stability in the region, according to Reuters.

“President Erdogan emphasized that the latest move by the U.S. government would negatively impact the peace and stability in the region. Russian President Putin stated he shared the same views,” sources in Erdogan’s office told the news agency.

Also on Thursday, Erdogan and Pope Francis agreed in another phone call that there should not be any changes to Jerusalem’s status, according to Reuters.

Migration and labour shortages in Asian countries

Where workers will be needed in the region, and where they could come from
THE Asian “model” of migration tends to be highly restrictive, and often appears more dedicated to stemming immigration than to managing it. The continent′s governments frequently curtail entry severely, strongly discourage permanent settlement and keep citizenship out of reach. Although Asia is home to half the world′s population, it provides only 34% of the total number of emigrants and hosts a mere 17% of immigrants. Just one-third of Asians who move abroad remain on the continent, and of those, most stick to neighbouring countries. This makes it hard to fill jobs in many countries where they are needed, despite a surplus of labour elsewhere.

The imbalance of workers will only grow more dire as populations get greyer. For now, China is still a net exporter of labour. But during the next 30 years its working-age population is set to shrink by 180m, and it will need 20m more domestic workers. Overall, East Asia would have to import 275m people between the ages of 15 and 64 by 2030 to keep the share of its population at working age steady. Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and especially Thailand need workers, while Myanmar, Indonesia and the Philippines have too many. South Asia, meanwhile, could afford to lose 134m labourers—India alone could send more than 80m abroad—without worsening its dependency ratio. China’s projected shortfall in 2030 is equivalent to 24% of its current working-age population; in Bangladesh the likely surplus is 18%.

Scientists find a miniature version of our solar system, with eight planets and a sun-like star
    Dec 14 2017
With the help of artificial intelligence, scientists scouring data from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope have discovered an eighth planet around the star known as Kepler-90.

The find sets a new record for the most exoplanets around a single star and, for the first time, ties with our own.
Kepler-90i orbits a sun-like star located 2,545 light-years away in the constellation Draco. Like Earth, Kepler-90i is the third rock from its sun — though it sits much closer, circling its star every 14.4 days.

Democrat wins senate seat in Alabama for first time in a quarter …
    The Times-Dec 12, 2017
It was the first Democratic Senate victory in a quarter-century in Alabama, one of the reddest of red states, and proved anew that party loyalty is anything but sure in the age of Trump. It was a major embarrassment for the president and a fresh wound for the nation’s already divided Republican Party.

World’s scientists turn to Asia and Australia to rewrite human history
    The Conversation AU-Dec 7, 2017
New analyses of human fossils have pushed back our earliest recognisable modern ancestors to around 310,000 years. And they weren’t found in eastern or southern Africa (like previous fossil finds), but from a site called Jebel Irhoud in Morocco. These findings have raised questions regarding exactly .
But now we see that the human story is far more complex. As summarised by Christopher Bae and colleagues in their latest paper just published in Science, data from Asia and Australia is becoming vital in piecing this new history together.

US Military Testing Mind-Control Chips on Soldiers’ Brains to Alter Their Moods

Depression, PTSD, and anxiety attacks are all too common for soldiers in the line of duty. But what if we could change that as easily as flipping a switch?

The incredible emotional strain caused by life-or-death combat can leave long-lasting mental scars, but scientists working with the military have a new solution: They’re currently testing mind-controlling chips implanted in the brains of human soldiers to help improve their moods, reports the Nature academic journal.

While fairly invasive, inserting the AI-controlled computer chips into soldiers’ brains may provide relief to plenty of soldiers both past and present as they work through the challenges caused by their service.

Thomas Fire Is Now California’s Largest Wildfire In History
    December 23, 20173:22 AM ET
The Associated Press reports the Thomas fire took only 2 1/2 weeks to burn its way into history books:

“Unrelenting winds and parched weather turned everything in its path to tinder — including more than 700 homes.

“The fire in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties had scorched 273,400 acres, or about 427 square miles of coastal foothills and national forest, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. That was 154 acres larger than California’s previous fire record holder — the 2003 Cedar fire in San Diego County that killed 15 people.

“The Cedar fire had been recognized as the biggest California wildfire in terms of acreage since 1932. Some fires before that date undoubtedly were larger but records are unreliable, according to state fire officials.”

PRESIDENT TRUMP CUTS FUNDING TO U.N. AFTER ISRAEL VOTE
BY NICOLE GOODKIND ON 12/25/17 AT 4:08 PM
The U.S. will cut its 2018 contribution to the United Nations by $285 million—nearly 25 percent—an announcement that comes days after more than 120 nations criticized the United States for its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Ambassador Nikki Haley made the announcement Sunday, but specifically blamed the world body for its budgetary excesses without making a specific reference to last week’s vote on President Donald Trump’s controversial Jerusalem decision.

“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked,” Haley said in a statement announcing the cut to the U.N.’s overall $5.4-billion budget. “This historic reduction in spending—in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable U.N.—is a big step in the right direction.”

Keep Up With This Story And More By Subscribing Now

Haley said there might be further budget cuts in the future. President Trump’s proposed 2018 spending budget would end funding for U.N. climate change programs and would cut funding to the United Nations Children’s Fund, also known as UNICEF, by 16 percent.

The looming retail apocalypse may be postponed in 2018
    Dec 25 2017
his year brought us no shortage of harbingers of the retail apocalypse. Mega-chains such as Toys “R” Us, Payless ShoeSource and H.H. Gregg filed for bankruptcy. The likes of Sears Holdings, Gap and Gymboree announced they were shutting hundreds of locations.

But as 2018 nears, retail is better positioned than it has been in a long time to resist impending doom
That’s partly because Republicans just passed a giant corporate tax cut that President Trump signed into law last week. There is arguably no policy goal for which retailers have fought harder in recent years, and the changes are sure to provide a major boost to their balance sheets.

There are other upbeat signs, too, including that the industry appeared to be cruising to its best holiday season since before the Great Recession.
