Almost three-quarters of all cruise passengers in the future could be Chinese, according to research by tourism authorities in the country.
The study, carried out by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), estimated that China has the potential to deliver 83 million cruise passengers a year. Those cruising from Hong Kong alone could account for 54 million passengers annually, it claims. With around 23 million people around the world expected to take a cruise in 2015, China would completely dominate the industry if such growth comes to fruition.

“The Chinese love cruises and the market’s growth rate is the fastest in the world… yet that is only a drop in the bucket in terms of total Chinese outbound travel, so we see much more potential,” Adam Goldstein, chairman of the Cruise Lines International Association and also the president of Royal Caribbean, told CNBC last month.

Arnold Donald, president & CEO of Carnival Group, the world’s largest cruise operator, added: “China will overtake the U.S. and Europe at some point to be the largest cruising market in the world, so we are really excited to be here.” Donald relocated from Miami to Shanghai in September, illustrating how important the firm considers the market. Carnival is also taking a third Costa-branded ship to China this year.

Chinese cruise lines are also investing heavily. Bohai, which runs a ferry service between China and Japan, has bought Costa Cruises’ 836-passenger Costa Voyager (renamed Zhong Hua Tai Shan). The ship will operate on China-Taiwan-Japan itineraries from 2016.
Last year, Chinese travel brand Ctrip announced a joint venture with Royal Caribbean. SkySea cruises will begin sailing with two rebranded Royal Caribbean vessels in summer 2015, on routes including Taiwan.

….It was declared on 12 October 2015, that the ship would be reintroduced and overhauled particularly for the Chinese market. On 30 March 2016, the boats new name, Norwegian Joy, and the new home ports of Shanghai and Tianjin (Beijing) were reported. In October 2016, development of another ship was reported, assuming control over the Norwegian Bliss name…..

China, and buoying the whole industry.

“China presents the next great frontier for cruising,” Carnival CEO Arnold Donald told Wall Street analysts. “It’s just a matter of time before China becomes the largest cruise market in the world.”
According to data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the total number of trips abroad by Chinese citizens rose about 10% to 109 million in 2014, with spending up about 17%. And more of that is going to cruises: the number of cruise passengers originating from China rose 79% between 2012 and 2014.
Carnival currently has four ships based in China. The company recently signed a memorandum with state-owned China Merchants Group to look into forming two joint ventures that will build cruise ports and ships.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean said earlier this week that Tianjin, a city of 10 million about 100 miles from Beijing, will be the new home for its third Quantum-class ship (those with the most bells and whistles like space observation decks) starting in April 2016. It will be the fifth China-based ship in the company’s fleet and its first to be based in China from the get-go. Last year, Royal Caribbean decided to redeploy its newest ship, the 4,200-passenger Quantum of the Seas, to Shanghai year-round as of this spring, after only six months cruising New York-Caribbean trips.

To funnel more Chinese passengers to its ships, Royal Caribbean is looking for partnerships with local travel companies. In the fall, it struck a deal with Chinese online travel company Ctrip, which is the biggest seller of its cruises there.

And to make it clear to the China government, whose cooperation Royal Caribbean and its rivals need to get more infrastructure that lets large ships dock in various cities, that its plans to keep investing in China. Royal Caribbean said this week it is looking into building Chinese dry dock facilities and developing logistics centers to supply its ships deployed in the region. It is also considering programs that would bring thousands of North American vacationers to visit China by cruising.
While China is still Royal Caribbean’s No. 3 market, after the U.S. and Europe, it is clear executives see the Middle Kingdom as a major growth engine.
“Potential growth here is greater than the U.S. market,” Michael Bayley, president and chief executive of Royal Caribbean’s international operations, told the Wall Street Journal in Beijing earlier this week.

This film shows the subway system of the city of Shanghai.

With 24 Million inhabitants Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world. It’s subway system is fairly new: It only opened in 1993, but since grew to an impressive 14 lines, 330 stations and 537km route length, and new routes will still open over the next years. The subway is very well adopted by the people and it became one of the busiest in the world.

This film shows some scenes of the subway system. Most of it is built under ground, and platform edges are usually equipped with screen doors, which makes it a bit hard to film. Nevertheless, I hope to be able to give a good impression of the Shanghai Subway and how it works.

This is the second part of my film about the Shanghai Subway.

Today we focus on the elevated sections of the subway, since the underground stations are mostly equipped with screen doors, which makes them hard to film. The greater part of this film shows stations along line 4, which runs in a loop. Parts of it are shared with line 3, and that is where the line is elevated. Also featured in the film is a short ride in a modern AC09 trainset on line 9. Finally, We see some trains along line 6 toward the end of the film.

Enjoy!

Shanghai – a booming metropolis in east China – is the first stop of many people when they travel to China. Want to feel the pulse of the city immediately? It is recommended to take the Shanghai maglev train if you are just arriving at Pudong International Airport of the city. You will be impressed by the amazingly fast speed of the train and have an exciting first experience in the city.

Build with the technological help from Germany, SMT has been operated since the end of 2002. It is the world’s first and only commercialized maglev train line in operation. It runs from Pudong International Airport to Longyang Rd. Station located at the intersection of Longyang Road and Baiyang Road in Pudong New Area.
The fast and convenient train is operated by Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd., which was set up in 2000.

Full ride video on the Maglev Train in Shanghai from Longyang Station to Pudong Airport. Our top speed was 431 km or 268 mph! By car it would take 50 minutes to drive. By maglev, only 8 minutes! Longyang subway station is the only one that connects to the maglev as of 10/2011. Passing train at 5:22. For ticket info: http://www.smtdc.com/en/jszl.asp

I love this Train!

In this video I started in Longyang Road Metro Station, near the International Exposition Center, and terminate at Shanghai International Airport.

This is just a quick video of one of my favorite trains in the entire world. I still love the out dated, slow, noisy trains in Thailand and Malaysia that have tons of character, but this technological wonder is in entirely different class. Riding in it almost makes you feel as though it could just lift off the ground and Fly to your destination… and in a sense you are.

This train runs between the Longyang Road Metro Station, Huamu, Pudong and the Shanghai, Pudong International airport. At the LongYang station you can easily walk to the Shanghai, China, International Exposition Center, or walk accross a small walking alley to the SMT (Shanghai’s very modern Metro – Subway system).

At various times of the day the train’s run speeds are regulated at different velocities. This trip was of the slower 300kph runs. At other times of the day it travels at 430kph. The Maximum/Record speed for this train is 501 kph.

At any of these speeds it definately cuts down the travel time to and from the airport and is worth the price just to say you travelled on it.

In the western part of Shanghai, a very modern and flourishing city, there is a venerable and famous Buddhist temple, Jade Buddha Temple. In 1882, an old temple was built to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928. It was named the Jade Buddha Temple.

The two precious jade Buddhist statues are not only rare cultural relics but also porcelain artworks. Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid. The Sitting Buddha is 190 centimeters high and encrusted by the agate and the emerald, portraying the Buddha at the moment of his meditation and enlightenment.

The Recumbent Buddha is 96 centimeters long, lying on the right side with the right hand supporting the head and the left hand placing on the left leg, this shape is called the ‘lucky repose’. The sedate face shows the peaceful mood of Sakyamuni when he left this world. In the temple there is also another Recumbent Buddha which is four meters long and was brought from Singapore by the tenth abbot of the temple in 1989. Furthermore there are many other ancient paintings and Buddhist scriptures distributed in the different halls here..

China-developed AG600 aircraft, the world’s largest amphibious aircraft has taken its maiden flight today in the city of Zhuhai in southern China’s Guangdong Province. AG600 is the world’s largest amphibious plane and the first large specialist civil aircraft developed entirely in China. The 37-meter-long AG600 is around the size of a Boeing 737 and has a wingspan of 38.8 meters. The amphibious aircraft can be used to control forest fires, and to conduct maritime search and rescue operations.

AG600 is the world’s largest research Chinese in amphibious aircraft, a single ship amphibious aircraft commonly used, and the cantilever monoplane layout, the first three points with retractable landing gear. The most important engine is the use of high-power, stable and reliable 4 WJ6 engines, the engine is developed by our own production, and therefore no worries in terms of power. The whole machine takeoff weight reached 53.5 tons, as fire extinguishing type in just 20 seconds at a time, up to 12 tons, plus the large range of advantages, AG600 will be the world’s best fire-fighting aircraft, which is also the value of the United States and russia.

In the take-off and landing, it can be in the surface waves of 2 meters in the case of normal take-off and landing, very suitable for take-off and landing in China’s major sea areas. Because of its excellent body, AG600 amphibious aircraft can be converted into amphibious amphibious aircraft of all types, especially in areas where the airport cannot be built. The aircraft can be the only option. Compared with the previous water boom 5, the new generation of AG600 amphibious aircraft not only can take off from the water, but also take off from the airport on the road, making the use of double increase. And the older generation, water boom 5 can only take off from the water, flexibility is far better than AG600 amphibious aircraft.

……Assistant President of China Communications and Construction Company Wen Gang said in Nairobi in August that his company will impart skills and transfer technology to the locals so as to help the country in the manufacture of components for the SGR project locally.

“We will continue recruiting local people to impart skills and also ensure transfer of technology,” he said in Nairobi when he held talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

Wen added that at the peak of the project over 30,000 locals would be employed directly while 40 percent of the work would be sub-contracted to local companies.

On June 1, the trains of The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will be put into service, with President Uhuru Kenyatta scheduled to take the inaugural ride between the two cities. At his request, the train will be driven by a female driver. Training drivers is crucial for the success and sustainability of the infrastructure project. Concillia is one of many trainee conductors of the Mombassa-Nairobi Railway Project who, earlier this year, visited China for a 50-day vocational training. Concillia said she was confident she would be chosen as the train driver for President Kenyatta. Regardless of who will be chosen for the task, Concillia and her friends have already written an important chapter in the history of railways in Kenya, and Africa at large.

The lowest paid Kenyan worker will sleep happy after President Uhuru Kenyatta announced an increment of 18% of the minimum wage bill. The increment comes after more than two years of no hike for the Kenyan worker.
