The Yellow River (or Huang He) is the second-longest river in Asia after the Yangtze and the sixth-longest in the world at the estimated length of 5,464 km (3,395 mi).Originating in the Bayan Har Mountains in Qinghai province of western China, it flows through nine provinces and empties into the Bohai Sea near the city of Dongying in Shandong province. The Yellow River basin has an east–west extent of 1,900 kilometres (1,180 mi) and a north–south extent of 1,100 km (680 mi). Its total basin area is 742,443 square kilometres (286,659 sq mi).

The Yellow River is notable for the large amount of silt it carries—1.6 billion tons annually at the point where it descends from the Loess Plateau. If it is running to the sea with sufficient volume, 1.4 billion tons are carried to the sea annually. One estimate gives 34 kilograms of silt per cubic meter as opposed to 10 for the Colorado and 1 for the Nile. This video shows the sediment control projects along the Yellow River.

Chinese President Xi Jinping accompanied visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a visit to Xi’an, capital city of Shaanxi Province and Xi’s hometown, on Thursday.

Xi accompanied Modi on the visit to Da Ci’en Temple and the Wild Goose Pagoda, where the famous Chinese Buddhist monk Xuan Zang presided over translation of Buddhist scriptures and expounded Buddhist doctrines in the Tang Dynasty (618-904).

The Da Ci’en Temple has witnessed a long history of friendly exchanges between China and India, said Xi, vowing to push forward the friendly ties between the two countries.

Modi said he was deeply impressed by the Xi’an visit and presented saplings of Bodhi tree to the temple.

Xi said the Bodhi trees presented by ex-Indian Prime Minister Javaharlal Nehru in 1954 continue to thrive today and have become a telling symbol of the friendship between the two peoples.

After the visit, Modi was accorded a traditional Tang Dynasty welcome at the Xi’an city wall, and Xi welcomed him at the watchtower of the wall.

The two leaders also enjoyed a brilliant art performance staged by Chinese artists.

The current three-day tour is Modi’s first China visit. Premier Li Keqiang and top legislator Zhang Dejiang will also meet him in Beijing on Friday.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is the landmark of the city of Xi’an. The entire temple complex stands as a symbol to the monk Xuangzang, who translated and stored the Buddhist scriptures he brought back with him from a trip to India. The 64 m high pagoda is from the year 652 and at one time had 10 stories.
The pagoda was built by Emperor Gaozong in memory of his deceased mother. In addition to the pagoda, the temple complex includes a main and secondary hall and a bell and drum tower. In the halls are a series of Buddhist fine art items such as jade reliefs, stone sculptures and images of Buddha.

The Bingling Temple is a series of grottoes filled with Buddhist sculpture carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River. It lies just north of where the Yellow River empties into the Liujiaxia Reservoir. The caves were constructed over a millennium and the first begun around the year 420 at the end of the Western Qin kingdom. The caves culminate at a large natural cavern where wooden walkways wind up the rock face to hidden cliff caves and the giant Maitreya Buddha of more than 27 metres tall. Silk road treasure.
