WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump agreed on Thursday to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un by May after Kim pledged to refrain from further nuclear tests and move toward denuclearization, according to South Korean officials.MAR 8 2018
Chung said that in recent talks with South Korea, Kim Jong Un “expressed eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible.”

A senior administration official said the sentiments from Kim were conveyed verbally to Trump during a briefing in the Oval Office at the White House on Thursday, denying the existence of a physical letter from the South Korean envoy to the president, which was reported earlier.

The White House confirmed that Trump would accept Kim’s invitation to meet, but a senior administration official told reporters on a call after the announcement that “at this point, we’re not even talking about negotiations.”

“What we’re talking about is an invitation by the leader of North Korea to meet face to face with the president of the United States,” the official said. “The president has accepted that invitation.”

Trump Administration Sues California Over Immigration Laws

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration escalated what had been a war of words over California’s immigration agenda, filing a lawsuit late Tuesday that amounted to a pre-emptive strike against the liberal state’s so-called sanctuary laws.

Stephen Hawking: What the professor said about his own death
The Cambridge professor passed away at 76, his family said in a statement.

Professor Hawking had lived with the expectation of an early death for much of his life. When he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at 21, it was expected to take him in just a few years – but he lived for more than 50, continuing to reveal the universe’s darkest secrets and becoming a medical miracle at the same time.Professor Hawking said that living with the disease and the prognosis that came with it had given him a philosophical approach to his own death. But there was always plenty more he wanted to get out of the way before it happened.

“I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first,” he told The Guardian in 2011.

Iconic physicist Stephen Hawking dies at age 76
In the same interview, Professor Hawking dismissed the comforts of belief in the afterlife, and said that he expected nothing to greet him after he died.

“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail,” he said. “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”
Before then, some religious advocates had used his own work as a suggestion of the belief in a god. Professor Hawking closed his famous A Brief History Of Time by writing “It would be the ultimate triumph of human reason – for then we should know the mind of God”.

But Professor Hawking made clear, not least in his 2010 book The Grand Design, that he meant that comment only metaphorically. In that book and elsewhere, he argued that it wasn’t necessary for a creator to have begun the universe, putting him in direct contradiction of many of the people who had made use of that quote.

“What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God. Which there isn’t. I’m an atheist,” he told El Mundo.

Trump Denies Russian Guilt in Murder. Tillerson Admits It, Is Fired. Hmm.
    March 13, 2018
Every Trump administration personnel shake-up is a noir story of terrible, incompetent people squabbling with other terrible, incompetent people. But one thing that stands out about the firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is that Tillerson explicitly identified Russia as the culprit in the murder of Sergei Skripal in the United Kingdom, and Donald Trump did not.

Yesterday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders condemned the murder as “reckless,” but repeatedly declined to endorse the United Kingdom’s conclusion that Russia was behind it. This exchange with reporters is quite odd:

Pennsylvania House Race, in a District Trump Won by 20 Points, Is Too Close to Call
By JONATHAN MARTIN and ALEXANDER BURNSMARCH 13, 2018

CANONSBURG, Pa. — The Democrat and Republican in a special House election in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Trump country were divided by a few hundred votes in a race that was too close to call early Wednesday — an ominous sign for Republicans in a district that Donald J. Trump won by nearly 20 percentage points.
With 100 percent of votes counted, Conor Lamb, a Democrat, was clinging to a 579-vote lead over Rick Saccone, a Republican. But a few thousand absentee ballots had not yet been counted, suggesting that no winner would be declared until later in the day, at the earliest. And it was possible that a legal battle could ensue.

Lighthizer confirms U.S. weighing tariffs, investment curbs
Order would be declaration of trade war: former China minister
President Donald Trump is set to announce about $50 billion of tariffs against China over intellectual-property violations on Thursday, according a person familiar with the matter.

The president is considering targeting more than 100 different types of Chinese goods, according to the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The value of the tariffs was based on U.S. estimates of economic damage caused by intellectual-property theft by China, the person said.

“Tomorrow the president will announce the actions he has decided to take based on USTR’s 301 investigation into China’s state-led, market-distorting efforts to force, pressure, and steal U.S. technologies and intellectual property,” White House official Raj Shah said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.

“Congratulations. You’re now married to Mark Zuckerberg.” Since he would be one of the most deeply entrenched chief executives in American business thanks to a two-class stock structure that guaranteed him voting control over the company, I wrote, “You better hope he does everything right, because if he doesn’t, he’ll be harder to get rid of than tuberculosis.”

The new broadcaster will be called “Voice of China,” the person said, mimicking the U.S. government-funded Voice of America that started up during World War II to advance American interests. It was previously reported that the new entity would be created through merging China Central Television, China Radio International and China National Radio.

The world’s largest collection of ocean garbage is growing exponentially, a new study says.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch — located halfway b/w Hawaii and California — has some 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic and weighs nearly 88,000 tons.

World’s largest collection of ocean garbage is now twice the size of Texas VIDEO
Nicknamed the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’, trash continues to pile up in a location between California and Hawaii.
Due to the amount of pollution and littering, it’s incredible how much trash ends up in our oceans. They remain less than 5 percent explored, but 88 percent of the ocean’s surface is said to be polluted. In one such instance, a pile of floating debris has grown large enough to be nicknamed ‘Great #Pacific Garbage Patch.’

What is the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’?
The patch has grown to be twice the size of Texas, which is well known for being the second largest state in the United States, right below Alaska. More specifically, it has grown to be more than 600,000 miles, has an estimate of 80,000 metric tons of plastic trash, and around 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic.

These new numbers are nearly 16 times the original estimations. Though the ‘#Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ is not the only patch in the world, it is the most famous. There is a second patch just to the west, off the coast of south-east Japan.

BY CHRISTINA ZHAO ON 3/20/18 AT 11:52 AM
Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Taiwan at the National People’s Congress (NPC) on Tuesday that any efforts on its part to split China into two is “doomed to fail” and will invite “the punishment of history.”

“Any actions and tricks to split China are doomed to failure and will meet with the people’s condemnation and the punishment of history,” Xi said, during his half-hour long nationalistic speech. “Every inch of our great motherland’s territory cannot be separated from China.”

“The Chinese people have been indomitable and persistent, we have the spirit of fighting the bloody battle against our enemies to the bitter end.”

Philippines informs U.N. of ICC withdrawal, court regrets move
MANILA (Reuters) – The Philippines has notified the U.N. secretary-general of its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), but has assured the United Nations of its commitment to the rule of law.
resident Rodrigo Duterte is pulling the Philippines out of the ICC after a court prosecutor announced last month that a preliminary examination was underway into an accusation that the president and top officials had committed crimes against humanity during a deadly war on drugs.

Duterte, known for his tough stand on crime, has repeatedly denied he ordered police to kill drug suspects. Police deny activists’ accusations of murder and cover-ups and say the more than 4,000 people killed in police encounters were armed and resisted arrest.

Study Finds Tiny Plastic Particles In 93% Of Bottled Water
Here are the brands that contained the highest levels of plastic.
You may choose to drink bottled water because of concerns about contaminates and chemicals in the water coming from your tap. It turns out there may be something in those store-bought bottles that’s worth worrying about as well.

Project Orb Media, a nonprofit, global journalism organization focusing on food, water, energy, health, education, environment, trade and governance, commissioned scientists at the State University of New York in Fredonia to analyze bottled water. The study found that a single bottle of water can contain dozens or possibly even thousands of microscopic plastic particles.
    Multiple Brands And Bottles Tested
Researchers performed tests on 259 individual bottles from 27 different lots across 11 brands purchased from 19 locations in 9 countries. The brands tested were:

    Aqua (Danone)
    Aquafina (PepsiCo)
    Bisleri (Bisleri International)
    Dasani (Coca-Cola)
    Epura (PepsiCo)
    Evian (Danone)
    Gerolsteiner (Gerolsteiner Brunnen)
    Minalba (Grupo Edson Queiroz)
    Nestlé Pure Life (Nestlé)
    San Pellegrino (Nestlé)
    Wahaha (Hangzhou Wahaha Group)
Preliminary tests found an average of 10.4 tiny plastic particles in each one-liter water bottle. Further testing with a microscope and fluorescent dye detected approximately 315 microparticles per bottle, which the scientists believe are plastic as well.
