Myanmar risks falling into a China debt trap
Beijing’s plan to build a US$7.5 billion deep-sea port at Kyaukpyu is raising concerns about the project’s pricing, terms and strategic motivation
By BERTIL LINTNER CHIANG MAI, JUNE 5, 2018 3:30 PM (UTC+8)

o understand China’s top priority in Myanmar, forget Beijing’s involvement in the country’s sputtering peace process, or efforts to restart its backed but now suspended US$3.9 billion Myitsone hydroelectric dam, or even securing rights to extract copper at the locally resisted Letpadaung mine outside of Mandalay.

Those are all subordinate interests to what China really wants in Myanmar: economic and strategic access to the Indian Ocean through a deep-water port at Kyaukpyu in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, a crucial link in Beijing’s US$1 trillion Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Facebook blacklists Myanmar hardline Buddhist group
Facebook bans the Buddhist nationalist movement Ma Ba Tha from its platform, as well as a pair of prominent monks known for stoking hatred towards the Rohingya

YANGON, Myanmar – Facebook has blacklisted a group of Myanmar Buddhist hardliners including monks notorious for bilious hate speech against Rohingya Muslims, the company said Thursday, June 7, as it scrambles to show it is tackling inflammatory content.

The social media company plays an outsized role in a country that has only recently come online and boasts 18 million accounts among the population of around 50 million people.

UN investigators have said that Facebook has morphed into a “beast” in the country and that hate speech and incitement to violence against the Rohingya are rampant on the site.

Some 700,000 Rohingya have fled a violent army crackdown in Myanmar to Bangladesh since August last year – after years of increasingly violent and angry discourse against the minority, much of it playing out on Facebook.

In response, Facebook this week has undertaken its highest-profile visit yet to Myanmar.

It banned the Buddhist nationalist movement Ma Ba Tha from its platform, as well as a pair of prominent monks known for stoking hatred towards the Rohingya.

“They are not allowed a presence on Facebook, and we will remove any accounts and content which support, praise or represent these individuals or organizations,” said Content Policy Manager David Caragliano.

Extremist monks Parmaukkha and Thuseitta join their fellow firebrand clergyman Wirathu on the blacklist, after he was banned in January.

Visa-free entry for Japan and South Korea soon
EI EI THU 06 JUN 2018
The government will grant visa-free entry to Myanmar for citizens of Japan and South Korea and give visas on arrival to Chinese tourists, U Khin Zaw, an adviser of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism told The Myanmar Times on Sunday.

“On Friday, the government sent an official letter agreeing to give visa free entry to Japan and South Korea and visas-on-arrival (VOA) to Chinese tourists,” he said.

The ministry’s marketing strategy focuses on tourists from ASEAN, Japan, China and South Korea, rather than tourists from western countries because the northern Rakhine humanitarian crisis has negatively affected tourism from the West.

No drugs, no alcohol in U.S. celebrity chef Bourdain’s body when he died: prosecutor
      Reuters Staff

      1 MIN READ

PARIS (Reuters) – U.S. celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, who killed himself in a French hotel room earlier this month, had no narcotics or alcohol in his body when he died, a local prosecutor said on Friday.
Bourdain, host of CNN’s food-and-travel-focused “Parts Unknown” television series, was 61. Brash and opinionated, he had spoken openly about his use of drugs and addiction to heroin earlier in his life.

“No trace of narcotics, no trace of any toxic products, no trace of medicines, no trace of alcohol,” prosecutor Christian de Rocquigny told Reuters.

Bourdain, whose career catapulted him from washing dishes at New York restaurants to dining in Vietnam with President Barack Obama, hanged himself in a hotel room near Strasbourg, France, where he had been working on an upcoming episode of his TV series, according to CNN.

Proposal to split California into 3 states will be on November ballot

    Wednesday, June 13, 2018 02:06PM
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) — A proposal to divide California into three states will be on the November statewide ballot.

Backers of CAL 3 said last month they collected and delivered 600,000 signatures to California Secretary of State Alex Padilla’s Office, surpassing the 365,000 required by law to qualify for the ballot.

CAL 3 is led by venture capitalist Tim Draper.

The proposal calls for three states to be formed:

Northern California, roughly the Bay Area to the Oregon border; California, which would include six coastal counties, including Los Angeles, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, San Benito and Ventura; and Southern California, which would go from Fresno to San Diego, excluding those six coastal counties.

Click here to see a map of how California would be split under CAL 3.

If the measure passes, the California Legislature and U.S. Congress would still have to approve it.

US mistakenly puts Singapore in Malaysia during Trump-Kim summit, drawing social media scorn
REUTERS AND THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK Jun 13, 2018

SINGAPORE – The US State Department mistakenly made Singapore part of neighbouring Malaysia in a note issued in connection with Tuesday’s (June 12) North Korea-US summit and published on its website, sparking snide comments on social media.

US President Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday for the first ever summit between leaders of the old foes, at a hotel in the city state of Singapore.

The mistake came in a transcript of a briefing US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave on Monday. It gave the venue as “JW Marriott, Singapore, Malaysia”. The error was rectified later to remove the reference to Malaysia.

“Well, US State Department still thinks Singapore is in Malaysia,” said Twitter user @BrioS-BRxV.

    Your brain on marijuana 01:39
Programming note: For more on Canada, watch CNN’s “United Shades of America” Sunday night at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
(CNN)Recreational marijuana use will soon be legal in Canada after the Senate passed a “historic” bill on Tuesday with a vote of 52-29.

Canada is only the second country in the world — and the first G7 nation — to implement legislation to permit a nationwide marijuana market. In the neighboring US, nine states and the District of Columbia now allow for recreational marijuana use, and 30 allow for medical use.
Bill C-45, otherwise known as the Cannabis Act, stems from a campaign pledge of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to keep marijuana away from underage users and reduce related crime.
The act to legalize the recreational use of weed was first introduced on April 13, 2017, and was later passed at the House of Commons in November. The Senate passage of the bill was the final hurdle in the process.

In the Bay Area, $117,400 is considered ‘low income’
    Jun 27, 2018 09:46 AM PD
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – It’s no secret that the Bay Area is an expensive place to live.

But now it’s become so expensive that a six-figure salary is considered “low income,” according to a report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The annual report says a family of four in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties that earn less than $117,400 are “low income.”

This means they qualify to live in low-income housing projects.

$73,000 is considered “very low income” in those counties.

To most Bay Area residents, these numbers aren’t shocking considering the the high cost of living.

In March, the median home price in the Bay Area hit a record high at $820,000, according to CoreLogic.

In San Francisco County, the median home price hit $1,087,599, making it the most expensive housing market in California.

Almost seven-in-ten Americans have news fatigue, more among Republicans
If you feel like there is too much news and you can’t keep up, you are not alone. A sizable portion of Americans are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of news there is, though the sentiment is more common on the right side of the political spectrum, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted from Feb. 22 to March 4, 2018.

Almost seven-in-ten Americans (68%) feel worn out by the amount of news there is these days, compared with only three-in-ten who say they like the amount of news they get. The portion expressing feelings of information overload is in line with how Americans felt during the 2016 presidential election, when a majority expressed feelings of exhaustion from election coverage.
