The Turkish lira recovered from its record low in Tuesday morning trading, strengthening around 6 percent against the dollar after Turkey’s central bank pledged to provide liquidity.

Extreme temperatures ‘especially likely for next four years’
    Tue 14 Aug 2018 11.00 EDT
The world is likely to see more extreme temperatures in the coming four years as natural warming reinforces manmade climate change, according to a new global forecasting system.

Following a summer of heatwaves and forest fires in the northern hemisphere, the study in the journal Nature Communications suggests there will be little respite for the planet until at least 2022, and possibly not even then.

Rising greenhouse gas emissions are steadily adding to the upward pressure on temperatures, but humans do not feel the change as a straight line because the effects are diminished or amplified by phases of natural variation.

From 1998 to 2010, global temperatures were in a “hiatus” as natural cooling (from ocean circulation and weather systems) offset anthropogenic global warming. But the planet has now entered almost the opposite phase, when natural trends are boosting man-made effects.

White House: We may have to kick China out of the WTO
    by Pete Kasperowicz
    | August 13, 2018 09:02 AM
Kevin Hassett said China for too long has flouted intellectual property rights rules, and said it could find itself outside the WTO if it doesn’t start respecting those rules.

“China really needs to make up its mind,” Hassett said on Fox Business News. “Do they want to be in the community of nations, do they want to be part of the WTO and just behave like everybody else, or don’t they?
“And if they don’t, then we, the community of nations, are going to have to think about what are we going to do about that?” he asked. “Are we going to let them stay in the WTO?”

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce previously said it would never remove a star over backlash.
West Hollywood City Council has voted “unanimously” to approve a resolution urging Los Angeles City Council and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to permanently remove Donald Trump’s Walk of Fame star.

The star, which was unveiled in 2007, has been vandalized numerous times and completely destroyed twice. The most recent destruction came in late July when 24-year-old Austin Mikel Clay allegedly took a pickaxe to it. For his actions, he was booked on felony vandalism and jailed on $20,000 bail. He has since been released.

Catholic Priests Abused 1,000 Children in Pennsylvania, Report Says
Bishops and other leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania covered up child sexual abuse by more than 300 priests over a period of 70 years, persuading victims not to report the abuse and law enforcement not to investigate it, according to a searing report issued by a grand jury on Tuesday.
“Despite some institutional reform, individual leaders of the church have largely escaped public accountability,” the grand jury wrote. “Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades.”

Pentagon: Chinese military ‘likely training’ for strikes against US and allies
BY TAL AXELROD – 08/17/18 09:37 AM EDT
A Pentagon report released Thursday details China’s aggressive plans for expansion in regard to its global presence and military capabilities.

It notes China has significantly bolstered its bombing capabilities and is “likely training for strikes against U.S. and allied targets.”

The report notes the training is part of an attempt to leverage “China’s growing economic, diplomatic, and military clout to establish regional preeminence and expand the country’s international influence.”

National security advisor John Bolton warns of electoral interference from China, Iran and North Korea — not just Russia
“I can say definitively that it’s a sufficient national security concern about Chinese meddling, Iranian meddling and North Korean meddling that we’re taking steps to try to prevent it,” Bolton told ABC’s “This Week.”
President Donald Trump suggested Saturday that those investigating Russia’s role in U.S. politics should broaden their scrutiny to Beijing.
Bolton also said he is confident that he and his Russian counterpart will discuss the Kremlin’s election prying during a meeting later this week.

National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Sunday that the U.S. government is not just worried about Russian interference in the 2018 midterm elections, but efforts from China, Iran and North Korea as well.

With Russia’s actions in the 2016 election still a raging controversy, and amid fears that Moscow is still attempting to subvert the U.S. political process, Bolton issued a warning about America’s other geopolitical adversaries.

“I can say definitively that it’s a sufficient national security concern about Chinese meddling, Iranian meddling and North Korean meddling that we’re taking steps to try to prevent it,” Bolton said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Being indicted isn’t Donald Trump’s problem. Impeachment might be.
    Chris Cillizza
Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large

Updated 10:39 AM ET, Wed August 22, 2018
That is a violation of campaign finance laws, one of the eight charges that Cohen pleaded guilty to on Tuesday. And so, if Cohen admitted he broke the law and testified that he did it at the direction of the President then, well, isn’t Trump in deep trouble?
Probably not. And the reason is that special counsel Robert Mueller’s office has apparently signaled to the President’s legal team that they will abide by longstanding Justice Department regulations that stipulate that a sitting President can’t be indicted. “All they get to do is write a report,” Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani told CNN’s Dana Bash in May. “They can’t indict. At least they acknowledged that to us after some battling, they acknowledged that to us.”
On Tuesday night, a source close to the White House told Fox News’ John Roberts, “Remember, the President cannot be indicted.”

The 9 August attack killed 40 boys aged from six to 11 who were being taken on a school trip. Eleven adults also died. Local authorities said that 79 people were wounded, 56 of them children. CNN reported that the weapon used was a 227kg laser-guided bomb made by Lockheed Martin, one of many thousands sold to Saudi Arabia as part of billions of dollars of weapons exports.

Saudi Arabia is the biggest single customer for both the US and UK arms industries. The US also supports the coalition with refuelling and intelligence.

Asian Currencies Slip on Trade Fears as Authorities Try to Avert Crisis
    August 17, 2018 11:24 AM
    TAIPEI —
Many of Asia’s currencies are losing value against the U.S. dollar this year as China and the United States fight over trade, but analysts say policymakers are handling the dip better now than during past down cycles.

China, India, Indonesia and Myanmar, to name just a few, have seen their currencies lose value since the start of 2018. The Indian rupee hit an all-time low in June, and the Chinese yuan lost 3.2 percent over the year through June.

Newspaper calls for war of words against Trump media attacks
By Bob Salsberg ASSOCIATED PRESS AUGUST 10, 2018
The Boston Globe’s editorial page is proposing a coordinated editorial response from publications across the United States to President Trump’s frequent attacks on the news media.

‘‘We are not the enemy of the people,’’ said Marjorie Pritchard, a deputy managing editor of the Globe, referring to a characterization of journalists that Trump has used in the past. The president, who contends he has largely been covered unfairly by the press, also employs the term ‘‘fake news’’ often when describing the media.

Russia to Stage Biggest Military Exercises Since Cold War
By Henry Meyer and Ilya Arkhipov

Defense minister says 300,000 troops, 1,000 aircraft involved
Chinese army to send detachments for Vostok-2018: Shoigu
Russia is to hold its biggest military maneuvers since the height of the Cold War next month, mobilizing about 300,000 troops and including the participation of thousands of soldiers from China, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

The Vostok-2018 exercises in Russia’s eastern and central military districts — spanning from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific coast — from Sept. 11-15 will involve almost a third of the country’s soldiers, making them the largest since 1981, Shoigu said, according to a ministry press release. Some 1,000 aircraft and both the Northern and Pacific fleets will be deployed.

“Imagine 36,000 tanks and armored personnel carriers all moving at the same time,” the defense minister said. “This will all be tested under conditions as close as possible to war.”
