I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration
I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.

    Sept. 5, 2018

There is a quiet resistance within the administration of people choosing to put country first. But the real difference will be made by everyday citizens rising above politics, reaching across the aisle and resolving to shed the labels in favor of a single one: Americans.

Israeli Educators and Academics Demand Netanyahu Cancel Agreement With Myanmar
Following Haaretz report on an education agreement between Israel and Myanmar, experts protest: ‘It’s inconceivable that while the Burmese junta is busy committing genocide it has the right to interfere in curricula in Israel’

A group of educators and academicians, led by human rights lawyer Eitay Mack, have appealed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who also holds the Foreign Minister’s portfolio, to cancel an education agreement Israel signed with Myanmar.

Last May, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely signed an agreement of cooperation in education between the two countries, stating “the intention to continue cooperating with our friends around the world.”

More Older Americans Are Turning To Marijuana
    September 12, 20185:00 AM ET
A study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence this month suggests that increasing numbers of middle aged and older adults are using marijuana — and using it a lot.

The analysis comes from data gathered in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2015 and 2016. About 9 percent of U.S. adults between ages 50 and 64 used marijuana in the the previous year, according to survey results. About 3 percent of people over 65 used the drug in that time period.

When Cancer Patients Ask About Weed, Many Doctors Say Go For It
This appears to be up from years past. In 2013, the same survey reported that 7 percent of middle-aged Americans used marijuana in the previous year, and only 1.4 percent of people over 65.

Cancer will kill nearly 10 million people this year, report estimates

    By Jen Christensen, CNN

Updated 10:00 AM ET, Wed September 12, 2018
(CNN)The number of people around the world who have cancer is “rapidly growing,” with 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths in 2018 alone, researchers estimate in a new report.

By the end of the century, cancer will be the No. 1 killer globally and the single biggest barrier to increasing our life expectancy, according to the report, released Wednesday by the World’s Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer.
    Cancer by the numbers
The researchers used data from 185 countries, looking at all the places in the body cancer can occur and taking a deeper look at 36 types.

Based on this data, one in five men and one in six women will develop cancer during their lifetime, the researchers estimate. One in eight men and one in 11 women will die from the disease.
The Americas, however, have their own serious problems with the disease, with 21% of cancer incidences and 14.4% of cancer deaths, despite having only 13.3% of the world’s population. Europe accounts for 23.4% of cancer cases and 20.3% of the deaths, but only 9% of the world’s population

With joint efforts of India and China, a high-speed rail link could be established between the two cities, Mr Zhanwu said at a conference here.

“It will only take a few hours to reach Kolkata from Kunming if the rail link becomes a reality,” he asserted.

The envoy also said that Myanmar and Bangladesh would benefit from the project.

Gov’t Signs MoU with Beijing to Build China-Myanmar Economic Corridor
By NAN LWIN 13 September 2018

YANGON—Myanmar on Sunday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China agreeing to establish the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC), part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, according to a statement from the China National Development and Reform Commission.
In recent months, Beijing agreed to a new deal with the new chairman of the Kyaukphyu SEZ vowing that the project will not lead to an excessive debt burden on the Myanmar government. Kyaukphyu is a key strategic project under the BRI, as it is expected to boost development in China’s land-locked Yunnan province. The project will provide China with direct access to the Indian Ocean and allows China’s oil imports to bypass the Strait of Malacca.

In June, State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met with Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe in Naypyitaw to discuss bilateral relations. At the meeting, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi vowed to strengthen cooperation on the BRI with China, Chinese media reported.

China is Myanmar’s top investment partner. According to DICA, China invested USD20.01 billion between 1988 and May of this year in the country.

Salesforce co-founder purchases Time Magazine for $190 million
Time Magazine is being acquired by Salesforce co-founder Marc Benioff, and his wife, for $190 million in cash.

The deal was announced Sunday by Meredith Corp., which bought the brand along with other publications of Time Inc. earlier this year

Benioff, who is one of the four co-founders of the cloud computing pioneer, is personally purchasing Time from Meredith Corp., and the transaction is unrelated to Salesforce.com, the announcement said.

“We’re pleased to have found such passionate buyers in Marc and Lynne Benioff for the Time brand,” Meredith president and CEO Tom Harty said in a statement. “For over 90 years, Time has been at the forefront of the most significant events and impactful stories that shape our global conversation.”

China strikes back with tariffs on $60 billion of US goods
    By Jethro Mullen, CNN

Updated 11:31 AM ET, Tue September 18, 2018
Hong Kong (CNN)China has fired back at the United States after President Donald Trump ramped up the trade war with his biggest wave of tariffs yet.

The Chinese government said Tuesday that it would impose tariffs on US goods worth $60 billion following the Trump administration’s announcement that it was hitting $200 billion worth of Chinese goods with new tariffs.
    ..
“The principal objective of the tariffs is probably not to bring Beijing to the bargaining table,” Arthur Kroeber, a senior analyst at research firm Gavekal said in a note Tuesday. “Rather, it is to force US multinational companies to pull back their investments in China, so that the interdependence of the two rival economies is reduced.”
“Against this aim,” he added, “no possible offer by China can cause the tariffs to be lifted.”

China still has “bullets” to fight Trump’s trade war
    Share Tweet Reddit Flipboard Email
Donald Trump’s White House this week escalated its trade war, adding tariffs of 10 percent on another $200 billion on imported Chinese goods effective Sept. 24. That penalty will rise to 25 percent beginning Jan. 1.

China retaliated on Tuesday as promised, following through with its own tariffs on $60 billion in U.S. goods from aircraft to liquified natural gas. That means the U.S. will start work on Mr. Trump’s previous threats to impose tariffs on all of the remaining imported goods from China, the U.S.’s biggest trading partner last year. That would mean another $267 billion of Chinese imports would be subject to U.S. tariffs.
    ၁. Regulation and disruption for U.S. companies in China
    ၂။ Consumer boycotts
၃။ Restrict or block some exports, like rare earth metals
၄။ Shift trade relationships to other areas
    ၅။ Shore up domestic industry
၆။ Slow investments in the U.S.

Donald Trump’s Boastful Comments Draw Laughter At United Nations General Assembly
“Didn’t expect that reaction but that’s OK,” the president said at the New York City summit of world leaders
President Donald Trump claimed his administration is one of the most accomplished in U.S. history during a speech Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly ― and the audience’s reaction caught him off guard.

After missing his initial time slot at the annual New York City summit of world leaders due to tardiness, Trump kicked off his morning speech by patting himself on the back for what he considers a job well done.

″In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country … So true,” the president said, eliciting several muffled laughs.

“Didn’t expect that reaction but that’s OK,” Trump responded with a chuckle, prompting the audience of world leaders, their aides and the media to erupt with laughter.

Japan successfully lands robot rovers on an asteroid’s surface
By Chandler Thornton and Euan McKirdy, CNN

Updated 5:30 AM ET, Sun September 23, 2018
(CNN)The Japanese space agency JAXA said it made history Saturday by successfully landing two unmanned rovers on an asteroid.

“The two rovers are in good condition and are transmitting images and data,” a JAXA statement said after the rovers separated from the Hayabusa2 spacecraft and landed on the asteroid Ryugu.
The rovers are collectively known as MINERVA-II1. The space agency reported that MINERVA-II1 is the world’s first mobile exploration robot to land on the surface of an asteroid.
“I felt awed by what we had achieved in Japan. This is just a real charm of deep space exploration,” said Takashi Kubota, a spokesman for the space agency.

‘Made in China’ no more: Chinese companies flee overseas to avoid US tariffs
    PUBLISHEDSEP 11, 2018, 12:22 PM SGT
BEIJING (AFP) – A growing number of Chinese companies are adopting a crafty way to evade US President Donald Trump’s tariffs: remove the “Made in China” label by shifting production to countries such as Vietnam, Serbia and Mexico.

The world’s two largest economies have been locked in a months-long trade fight after Trump imposed 25 per cent customs duties on US$50 billion worth of Chinese goods this summer, triggering a swift tit-for-tat response from Beijing.

Chinese factories making everything from bikes to tyres, plastics and textiles are moving assembly lines abroad to skirt higher customs taxes on their exports to the United States and elsewhere, according to public filings.
