Journeys in Time 2010-08-19 The Chinese Expeditionary Force (5)- Decisive counter-attack

The prelude to the Allied counter-offensive took place in the Hukawng Valley in northern Burma. In the local language, Hukawng has the ominous meaning “place where demons live”. Here, among the high mountains and dense jungle of the northernmost part of Burma, Chinese forces began moving against the Japanese in Burma.

Towards the end of 1943, Chinese forces mounted a series of counterattacks in northern Burma. Their victory over the Japanese army in Yupbang Ga gave a great boost to the morale of the Chinese army in India. As for the Japanese, their forces retreated to an area in the Hukawng Valley, where they built defensive positions on the hills and in the jungle, ready to resist any further attacks. But they were unable to withstand the full might of the Chinese Army. In less than two weeks, many of the Japanese positions had fallen, and their retreat had been cut off.
