What’s Happening January 2009

From the Tournament of Roses Parade to the day before the 2009 Super Bowl (SuperBowl XLIII), this month of January is packed full of activities, events, and news happenings, some that will shape year remaining months to come. I’ve organized a summary of happenings for the month along with resources for those seeking details on specific topics. Best of health to all of you and hope you are enjoying the new year so far.

The 2009 Rose Bowl Parade is already old news but I have some Rose Parade trivia for you. What famous golfer rode upon the Chiropractic Centennial float in the 1995 Rose Parade? Did you guessTiger Woods? You are correct if you did. The following year Tiger turned pro and signed multimillion dollar endorsement deals with Nike and Titleist.

Many people discovered that New Years Day is a postal holiday in the US. On the 1st I created a list of 2009 USPS Holidays and UPS / FedEx holidays as well. There’s another postal (federal) holiday coming up this month, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on Monday, January 19th. Speaking of the magnanimous Reverend King, here is a resource to view the Martin Luther King “I have a dream” speech on YouTube. Check it out before MLK Day and soak in the spirit …..

PASADENA, Calif. — After a holiday season of relentless rain in Southern California, the 122nd Rose Parade was bathed Saturday in abundant sunshine.

Clear blue skies and chilly temperatures greeted hundreds of thousands of spectators who lined Colorado Boulevard to gawk at the New Year’s Day showcase of flowery floats, marching bands and equestrians.

Many who staked out prime viewing spots on the sidewalks had to brave temperatures that dipped into the low 40s overnight. They shivered under blankets and huddled around fire pits to stay warm.

“It was cold but well worth it,” said Mark Tarango, as he rolled up his sleeping bag at the start of the 5½-mile parade route.

Tarango and his wife drove from Bakersfield, about two hours away, on Friday so that their three children could witness the spectacle for the first time.

“You get to appreciate it more in person. You miss the details, the smells, the festive atmosphere when you watch it on television,” he said.

Liz Mauser of Crystal, Minn., said she and her friends stayed warm by dancing on the street at the stroke of midnight.

“If we were in Minnesota, the cold would be normal. But this is not how you picture California,” Mauser said….

Welcome to 2011 and the Rose Parade, which is in its 122nd year rolling down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. Under crisp, clear skies and temperatures in the low 40s, parade-goers got a picture-perfect morning for the procession. This year’s parade features 47 floats, 22 bands and 22 equestrian entries and is themed “Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories.”

Rose Parade in California to welcome New Year

The above float is the City of Alhambra float. It has a “sister” city in China. This city is just south of the City of Pasadena where the Rose Parade takes place every year. They are both in Los Angeles County.

There are many such cities in Los Angeles County all spread out in the San Gabriel Valley. [The length is probably as long as from Yangon (Rangoon) to Bago (Pegu)]. Many Asian Americans, including Burmese Americans, live here in this region.

Among them, the Cities of Monterey Park and Alhambra are neighboring cities. These two cities are fast becoming 2nd and 3rd Chinatowns.

The City of of Los Angeles is the main City in Los Angeles County. It has an original large Chinatown spreading northwards from its City’s center.
