PITTSFORD, N.Y. — When Yani Tseng bought idol Annika Sorenstam’s home in Florida two years ago, she wondered how she’d ever fill the huge trophy case that came with it.

At the rate Tseng’s going, the world’s best female player might need to add another wing.

“Yes, I think so,” Tseng said. “It’s very lucky to buy her house now.”

By winning the LPGA Championship in dominating style Sunday, the 22-year-old from Taiwan became the youngest to win four LPGA majors. That’s better than Se Ri Pak, who won her fourth at 24, and well ahead of Sorenstam, who was 24 when she claimed the first of her 10 majors – the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open.

Sorenstam’s a believer in calling Tseng “the new face of the LPGA,” during a phone interview with Golf Channel while the final round was being broadcast

And no one’s in a position to argue after Tseng eclipsed the field in closing with a 6-under-66 for a 19-under 269 at Locust Hill Country Club outside of Rochester. She won by 10 strokes, and matched the LPGA record for lowest score in relation to par at a major that was set three previous times. Cristie Kerr shot 269 on this same course to win the LPGA Championship a year ago by 12 strokes, while Dottie Pepper (1999 Kraft Nabisco) and Karen Stupples (2004 Women’s British Open) also finished at 19 under.

Morgan Pressel (71) finished second. Kerr (69), Suzann Pettersen (67) and Paula Creamer (69) tied for third at 8 under.

“Pretty unbelievable,” said Kerr, who rallied late with a birdie on No. 16 and an eagle on 17. “Yani’s doing what I did last year. Obviously, it’s hard to beat. I’m not surprised. Yani’s a great player.”

And Kerr saw it coming after first playing a round with Tseng in South Korea seven years ago.

U.S. Women’s Open – Tseng Hopes Low Scores Help Raise Profile – NYTimes.com

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/10/sports/golf/us-womens-open-tseng-hopes-low-scores-help-raise-profile.html

COLORADO SPRINGS — The best player in women’s golf is winning majors at a pace that puts her ahead of Tiger Woods. At 22, Yani Tseng is 3-up on her contemporary Rory McIlroy in major victories, with four to his one.

With a victory Sunday at the United States Women’s Open, Tseng, the world No. 1, would become the youngest golfer, male or female, to complete a career Grand Slam. For all her success on the course, there is one contest Tseng cannot seem to win.

No matter how hard she tries — growing her hair to appear more feminine and growing her English vocabulary to convey her friendliness — her popularity in the United States has failed to take off. Tseng’s profile is lower than the cut of a corset dress: she did not make her first appearance on the cover of Golf World, the sport’s weekly bible, until last week, when she was gunning for her second consecutive major title and her fourth victory in 11 starts this year.

Not that she lacks a following. Tseng’s galleries at the Broadmoor have included a group of nearly three dozen people wearing pink T-shirts and waving miniature pink flags with white smiley faces. Hailing from as near as Denver and from as far as Taipei, Taiwan, they are Tseng fans brought together by Facebook.

Rick Lei, who traveled here from Taiwan and bought a week’s worth of tickets so he could follow Tseng’s every shot, explained her appeal. “She’s very open, smiling,” he said. “She’s very friendly. Back home she’s like every girl.”

Tseng is Taiwan’s answer to Paula Creamer of the United States, with whom she was paired during the first two rounds. She favors pink attire on Sundays, which led her compatriots to bestow upon her the nickname Pink Power.

A birdie blitz on the back nine enabled Taiwan’s Yani Tseng to beat seasoned Brit Laura Davies by three strokes at the Honda Women’s Australian Open.

Tseng, currently number six in the world, but whose last victory came on the LPGA Tour in 2008, posted seven birdies on her last 12 holes at the tough, par-73 Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne to shoot a bogey-free 7-under 66 and finish with a 9-under 283 that was three shots too good for defending champion Davies

Taiwanese Yani Tseng beats Michelle Wie to bag the Honda LPGA Thailand by five strokes

The world number one, Yani Tseng of Taiwan, has tagged yet another win to her name. The 22-year-old golfer won the Honda LPGA Thailand by a comfortable margin of five strokes over Michelle Wie of the United States. This is her first win as the world number one. The Thailand Open held at the Pattaya Old Course at the Siam Country Club marks Tseng’s straight third win in three weeks and the fourth win in 2011. She is holding on tight to her first spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings which Tseng took over a few days ago after successfully defending the Australian Open. This is her sixth LPGA event title, including three majors.

Yani Tseng wins Women’s British Open to make history

Yani Tseng won the Women’s British Open on Sunday to rack up her fifth major title at the age of 22, an achievement unparalleled by any golfer before her.

The Taiwanese world number one shot a final round 69 at Carnoustie.

Having trailed leader Caroline Masson by two strokes overnight, she finished four strokes ahead of Brittany Lang.

Germany’s Masson had to settle for a share of fifth, alongside 2009 champion Catriona Matthew of Scotland, after carding a disastrous six-over par 78.

The tournament, which Tseng also won last year, replaced the du Maurier Classic as a major in 2001.

Lang, of the United States, collected four birdies in the final eight holes to card an impressive five-under-par 67, while Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson – who won this event at Royal Birkdale in 2000, before it gained major status – was third on 11 under.

Amy Yang of South Korea was fourth, a further shot back.

While Tseng became the first woman to defend the title since America’s Sherri Steinhauer in 1999, Masson was left to reflect on a heartbreaking last day as her dreams of glory vanished in a flurry of bogeys.

They came at the second, third, seventh, 10th, 11th and 15th holes, while a double bogey at the par-four 12 had her slumping to eight over for the round, though she climbed back up the leaderboard with birdies on the last two holes.

Tseng, who earned a first prize of £239047, said: “It feels really good. I played so consistently today and I enjoyed the crowd here.

“It’s so great making history on this golf course and I feel wonderful right now. It’s an honour to win the British Open again. I think I feel much more comfortable this year rather than last year and I have been learning from my mistakes.

“I hope to keep winning. Next year there are another four majors and I will try and organise and keep working hard.”

Regarding Masson’s troubles she added: “She will learn from her mistakes, every great player goes through that. It’s not a big deal. You try your best and I’ve lost lots of times too.”
