Stocks edge up on Eurozone hopes

Nicolas Sarkozy tells David Cameron to ‘shut up’ in euro clash

Germany and France go some way towards détente, as Sarkozy targets the bulk of his anger at ‘interfering’ UK Prime Minister

By Rob Hastings and John Lichfield

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/nicolas-sarkozy-tells-david-cameron-to-shut-up-in-euro-clash-2375098.html

David Cameron was given a vicious dressing down by French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, yesterday as tensions reached boiling point among European leaders arguing over how to save the euro.

Mr Sarkozy was reported to have told the British Prime Minister that he should “shut up” during a meeting of the European Union’s 27 leaders.

“We are sick of you criticising us and telling us what to do,” he was quoted as saying by EU officials, losing patience at what he perceived to be Mr Cameron’s hectoring from the single currency’s sidelines. “You say you hate the euro and now you want to interfere in our meetings.”

Data Point To Greater Fears Of Europe Recession

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/heatherstruck/2011/09/22/data-point-to-greater-fears-of-europe-recession/
Business activity in Europe slowed this month to a pace that few analysts expected, as fears over the global economy have dampened confidence and led to the first contraction for the euro zone’s service sector in two years.

Surveys showed that business activity in the euro zone’s service sector contracted in September for the first time in two years. The Flash euro zone composite for the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) that is compiled by European research firm Markit Economics fell to 49.1 from 51.5 in August. Reuters reported that the reading came in below any estimate from the 37 analysts it had polled, all of whom expected the reading to remain above 50…
New export orders in Germany fell for the third month in a row, and at the fastest pace in 2 years. With Europe and the U.S. struggling to avoid recessions and China turning its economy inward to its own consumers, a slow-down in orders for German exports is expected. However the effects of the mounting fears about the global economic hot spots are difficult to predict….

European shares slip on US recession fears
Banking stocks among worst performers as political and legal tests threaten Europe’s efforts to resolve debt crisis.

    http://english.aljazeera.net/business/2011/09/2011958272066983.html

European shares have fallen, extending their previous session slide on concerns that the United States could be heading towards recession following last week’s weaker-than-expected US non-farm payroll data.

Banking stocks on Monday featured heavily among the worst performers on the growth outlook concerns, with the STOXX Europe 600 Banks index down 2.6 per cent.

“Sentiment seems to be playing a big move in these market swings, nothing happened over the weekend to install investor confidence,” Mark Priest, senior equities trader at ETX Capital, said.

“There are concerns that growth is not what it is expected to be.”

At closing time, London’s FTSE 100 index of leading companies dropped 3.58 per cent to 5,102.58 points.

In Paris, the CAC 40 fell 4.73 per cent to 2,999.54 points and in Frankfurt the DAX plunged 5.28 per cent to a two-year low at 5,246.18 points.

Mid-way through Latin American trading on Monday, the mani regional index fell 3.22 per cent and Mexico’s stocks fell 2.11 per cent following the European day’s losses.

Stock markets fell heavily on Monday as fresh concerns about Europe’s debt crisis and evidence of a continent-wide drift towards recession prompted investor flight into assets perceived as risk free.

The value of the 100 leading shares on the London market fell by £49bn, extending the two day loss since the publication of poor American jobs figures last Friday to £82bn.

By the close of business in the City, the FTSE 100 index was down 189.45 points at 5102.58, a decline of 3.5%. Markets elsewhere in Europe suffered even bigger falls, with Germany’s Dax index of leading shares shedding more than 5%. France and Italy also saw share price falls of around 5%.

    Quantitative easing

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_easing#QE1.2C_QE2_and_QE3

    Extracts:

Quantitative easing (QE) is an unconventional[1][2] monetary policy used by central banks to stimulate the national economy when conventional monetary policy has become ineffective. A central bank buys financial assets to inject a pre-determined quantity of money into the economy… QE1, QE2 and QE3

The expression “QE2” became a “ubiquitous nickname” in 2010, usually used to refer to a second round of quantitative easing by central banks.[55] In retrospect, the round of quantitative easing preceding QE2 may be called “QE1”. Similarly, “QE3” refers to proposals for an additional round of quantitative easing following QE2.[56]…(PROPOSALS FOR PRINTING MORE MONEY)

    Printing money

Quantitative easing has been nicknamed “printing money” by some members of the media,[68][69][70] central bankers,[71] and financial analysts.[72][73] However, central banks state that the use of the newly created money is different in QE. With QE, the newly created money is used for buying government bonds or other financial assets, whereas the term “printing money” usually implies that the newly minted money is used to directly finance government deficits or pay off government debt (also known as “monetizing the government debt”).[68]…

….In 2010, the Federal Reserve purchased $1.25 trillion of mortgage-backed securities (MBS) in order to support the sagging mortgage market. (PRINTED 1.25 TRILLION US DOLLARS) These purchases increased the monetary base in a way similar to a purchase of government securities.[67]

Is the Chinese Yuan the Most Reliable Forex Trade?

    Jun. 2nd 2011

Over the last six years, the appreciation of the Chinese Yuan has been as reliable as a clock. Since 2005, when China tweaked the Yuan-Dollar peg, it has risen by 28%, which works out to 4.5% per year. If you subtract out the two year period from 2008-2010 during which the Yuan was frozen in place, the appreciation has been closer to 7% per year. There is no other currency that I know of whose performance has been so consistently solid, and best of all, risk-free!

Asia’s Central Banks Want to Add Yuan to Foreign Reserves, Tetangco Says

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-04-12/asian-central-banks-want-to-add-yuan-to-reserves-tetangco-says.html

Asia’s central banks want to diversify their growing foreign-exchange reserves into yuan- denominated debt issued by China’s government, according to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco.

Tetangco, who met with People’s Bank of China as part of an economic road show, said Asian central banks have agreed to “look for new avenues for diversification,” according to an e- mailed statement from the Philippine Department of Finance. “Given, however, the traditional investment constraints of central banks, I suggest that the Chinese government may consider issuing more yuan-denominated bonds,” he was quoted as saying.

Premier Wen Jiabao is seeking to promote use of the yuan as an alternative to the dollar in global trade and investment, while avoiding a buildup of speculative capital. Cross-border transactions in the yuan totaled $58.7 billion in 2010, 13 times the amount a year earlier, Xinhua News Agency reported April 1, citing the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.
Tetangco’s “comments are ground-breaking as this is the first time that a regional central bank openly stated the intention of emerging Asia to diversify foreign-exchange reserves into yuan-denominated assets,” said Dariusz Kowalczyk, a Hong Kong-based economist at Credit Agricole CIB. “This is a coup for China, which has been working hard to internationalize its currency.”

    Weaker Dollar

The yuan slid 0.1 percent to 6.5448 per dollar as of 1 p.m. in Shanghai, extending yesterday’s retreat from a 17-year high of 6.5350 reached April 8, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. It has strengthened 0.8 percent this year, while the Dollar Index, a gauge of the greenback’s strength, has dropped 4.9 percent and yesterday recorded its lowest close since December 2009.
Central banks in Hong Kong and Thailand have won approval to invest in China’s interbank bond market this year.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority can invest up to 15 billion yuan, Chief Executive Norman Chan said Jan. 26. The Bank of Thailand can buy as much as 200 million yuan of debt denominated in China’s currency and will use its own assets rather than the nation’s foreign-exchange reserves to finance purchases, Chairman Chatumongol Sonakul said Feb. 24.
Malaysia, which imposed capital controls after the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis, will see increasing use of the yuan in trade with China, while keeping the dollar as its key reserve currency, Prime Minister Najib Razak said in an interview in March. The country eased regulations last August to allow exporters and imports to use the ringgit and other currencies to settle trade with foreign companies.
Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Bhd., which sets the global benchmark for crude palm oil, started accepting yuan as margin collateral for trading in November.

World Bank issues bond denominated in Chinese yuan

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12117280

The World Bank has issued its first bond denominated in the Chinese currency, joining a small but fast-growing market.

The yuan-denominated bond is being issued to promote the use of the Chinese currency in international markets.

    It will raise 500m yuan ($76m; £49m).
Other bodies, including the Asian Development Bank, and firms such as McDonald’s and Caterpillar have issued yuan bonds.

China’s stake in the World Bank, which gives financial and technical assistance to developing countries, is set to increase.

It could eventually see China as the third-largest stakeholder in the lender after the US and Japan.

Doris Herrera-Pol, the global head of capital markets at the World Bank, said: “This is a landmark transaction for the World Bank as it is the first World Bank issuance in RMB (yuan), and signals the strong interest of the World Bank in supporting the development of the RMB market.”

The market in Hong Kong for yuan-denominated bonds started just over three years ago.
In September last year, the Chinese government itself started issuing bonds in its currency, also known as the renminbi, there.

Hong Kong, although part of China, has a well-developed and more open financial market and is a conduit between China and the capitalist developed world.

Nigeria adds Chinese yuan to tradeable currencies

    Nigerian trade with China rising
    * Follows similar moves in Russia, Turkey
    * Will enable Nigerian banks to offer yuan accounts
(Adds background, details, comment from banker)

    By Chijioke Ohuocha

LAGOS, Jan 5 (Reuters) – Nigeria’s central bank said on Wednesday it had added the Chinese yuan to a list of currencies that can be used for trade settlement in the domestic foreign exchange market as trade flows with Beijing increase.

China is encouraging countries to use the yuan for trade settlement and diversify bilateral trade away from the dollar.

Around a third of Nigeria’s imports come from Asia, most of them from China, according to the central bank.

“We have issued a circular to the banks permitting them to trade in yuan … China is one of the fastest-growing economies and Nigeria’s trade relations with China are increasing,” central bank spokesman Mohammed Abdullahi said.

Data for 2009, the latest available, show Asian imports into sub-Saharan Africa’s second-largest economy rose 6.6 percent over the year while imports from Western nations declined 4.4 percent, reflecting its shifting trade pattern.
The volume of yuan trading in Nigeria is initially expected to be very low but it is seen as an important symbolic move.

Russia’s MICEX exchange launched yuan-rouble trading in December, and in October, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said China and Turkey had agreed to use the lira and the yuan in bilateral merchandise trade.

Nigeria’s move will enable lenders in Africa’s most populous nation to offer yuan accounts to their customers.

“Our imports are highly skewed toward China,” said one forex banker in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos.

“I was doing an analysis of our transfers and I found out that about 70 percent of our overseas funds transfers are to China,” he said, asking not to be named.

South Africa’s Standard Bank has started offering customers across the continent yuan bank accounts for trade with China, saying they will help customers to reduce their exposure to fluctuations in the U.S. dollar. [ID:nLDE69J106]

Citigroup, the third-largest U.S bank by assets, said last month it had opened nine China desks in Africa to help its Chinese clients navigate the continent. [ID:nLDE6B71RT]
Nigeria’s central bank said the addition of the yuan brought the number of tradeable currencies in Nigeria to 13, including the U.S. dollar, Euro, British Pound and Japanese Yen.

Asian commodities should deal in Asian currency?

    http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2009/5/19/business/3931121&sec=business

…..Should not an Asian crop for Asian consumer be traded more in Asian currencies?

There are some palm olein (cooking oil) traded in yuan in China’s domestic market but CPO imports in China are largely in US dollars.

Perhaps it is no coincidence then that China recently set up bilateral currency swap with six nations for trade purposes, with Indonesia (100 billion yuan) and Malaysia (80 billion yuan) among the first to be included (so that we can use yuan instead of US dollars to trade with China).

Maybe for a start, Malaysia palm oil exports to China (which accounts for about 25% of Malaysia CPO exports or about RM10.6bil per year) can be transacted and settled in yuan.

The straight forward yuan-ringgit (or yuan-rupiah) transaction means a China trader no longer need to convert from yuan to US dollars to buy CPO; and for a seller to convert the US dollars back to ringgit or rupiah – that will immediately save on currency conversion costs for both parties.

One of the implications for such yuan transactions is that it sets the yuan on the path to be a major trading currency among some Asian countries.

The increasing usage of yuan may eventually lead to more countries using yuan for trade purposes; maybe even holding as reserve currency once China open the yuan up to be internationally tradeable, both of which bode well for the strength of the yuan in the long run.

The present global financial crisis and recession has seen China and Asia economies coping better than the West. This is positive in the longer term for the yuan and other Asia currencies compared to the US dollars, especially with the US printing more money to get out of this financial crisis.

With the likely prospects of a weak US dollar, Asia palm oil exporters would certainly prefer a more stable, if not a strengthening, currency such as the yuan…..

New Move to Make Yuan a Global Currency
    January 12, 2011

    By LINGLING WEI

China has launched trading in its currency in the U.S. for the first time, an explicit endorsement by Beijing of the fast-growing market in the yuan and a significant step in the country’s plan to foster global trading in its currency.

The state-controlled Bank of China Ltd. is allowing customers to trade the yuan, also known as the renminbi, in the U.S., expanding the nascent offshore market for the currency which began last year in Hong Kong.

The decision is the latest move by China to allow the yuan, whose value is still tightly controlled by the government, to become an international currency that can be used for trade and investment.

“We’re preparing for the day when renminbi becomes fully convertible,” Li Xiaojing, general manager of Bank of China’s New York branch, told The Wall Street Journal. He said the bank’s goal is to become “the renminbi clearing center in America.”

Bank of China’s move comes at a time of U.S. pressure on China to let its currency rise in value. America has blamed an unfairly valued yuan for exacerbating the U.S. trade deficit with China. But the preparations for convertibility are also a sign of Chinese strength, as China, now the world’s second-largest national economy, recognizes that as a global power it must have a global currency. In time, a globally traded yuan could emerge as a store of value on par with the dollar, euro and yen.

The decision comes ahead of next week’s visit to Washington by Chinese President Hu Jintao, when China’s exchange-rate policies are expected to once again be in the spotlight.

While businesses and individuals in the U.S. can already trade yuan through Western banks such as HSBC Holdings PLC, the move by a Chinese-owned bank marks a stamp of approval by China on the expansion in yuan trading. Bank of China, which is 70%-owned by the government, now allows companies and individuals to buy and sell the Chinese currency through accounts with its U.S. branches.

Bank of China limits the amount of yuan that can be converted by a U.S.-based individual customer to up to $4,000 a day. The restriction is designed to fend off speculation in the currency, bank officials say. But there is no limit, at least for now, on the amount that can be converted by businesses, so long as they are engaged in international trading. The bank has no restrictions on the ability by U.S.-based customers to convert the yuan back into dollars.

The loosening of restrictions on trading yuan started in Hong Kong, a former British colony under Chinese sovereignty but with its own legal and financial systems. Anyone with a Hong Kong yuan account is now able to trade the currency. Bank of China’s move could further open up the currency to trading and attract Chinese companies with offices in the U.S.
    Going Global

Bank of China’s move to open trading of the yuan in the U.S. underscores Beijing’s growing openness to currency liberalization.

“This is making yuan more accessible to individuals and corporations,” says Robert Sinche, global head of foreign-exchange strategy at RBS Securities in Stamford, Conn. “But China has a long way to go before it has a fully convertible currency, and this is an inching step forward.”

Chinese regulators last month increased the number of exporters that can use the yuan to settle international transactions from a few hundred to nearly 70,000. Some analysts have predicted that it will be only a few years before 20% to 30% of China’s $2.3 trillion in imports could be conducted in yuan rather than dollars. Today, less than 1% is done in yuan, according to London’s Standard Chartered Bank. While offshore yuan trading has grown rapidly, it’s still a fraction of the $4 trillion daily trading in currency markets world-wide and pales next to trading in the dollar, yen, euro and other currencies.
    [boc0111] Bloomberg News

A pedestrian walks past a branch of the Bank of China in Beijing.

Some skeptics say growth could be curtailed by new regulations announced by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority last month, which puts restrictions on banks’ ability to offer yuan-related products in Hong Kong. Analysts say the regulations reflect China’s interest in keeping speculators from betting on the yuan’s movement and potentially causing disruptions to its economy.

What Beijing is interested in, analysts say, is measured growth in yuan trading. Some experts caution that China could still back track. Nevertheless, some industry observers have called yuan trading outside mainland China a game-changer, as it is one step in allowing the yuan to ultimately float freely. For now, the offshore market acts as a parallel market and doesn’t affect the official rate for the yuan set by Beijing.

Bank of China officials say the bank will take into account both the onshore and the offshore yuan trading when setting the exchange rate of the currency for its customers in the U.S.. To trade yuan in the U.S. through Bank of China, a corporation or individual would need to open a yuan account with one of the bank’s branches in New York or Los Angeles.

An obstacle to the growth of the business, at least for now, is a lack of demand for the currency among American businesses, which by and large still use the dollar to settle cross-border transactions. McDonald’s Corp. and Caterpillar Inc. recently became the first U.S. non-financial companies to sell debt priced in yuan in Hong Kong.

Potential users of the yuan could be attracted to what some might see as a sure bet, since China has said it will continue to allow its currency to appreciate. However, there’s still risk given the uncertainty over the pace of appreciation of the currency. Also, banks tend to charge relatively high service fees on yuan accounts.

Mr. Li said the yuan business is “one of the top priorities” for Bank of China’s U.S. operations. “We see bright future for the business,” he said. The bank’s Hong Kong subsidiary has been the sole clearing bank of renminbi banking business in Hong Kong for the past seven years.

The yuan strengthened 3.3% against the dollar last year, as Beijing loosened its peg to the dollar during the summer amid increasing pressures from the U.S. and other trading partners to let its currency appreciate. The yuan’s gains stalled after the Group of 20 meeting of the world major economies in November but have resumed as President Hu’s visit to the U.S. approaches.

China’s Yuan: The Next Reserve Currency?

Skeptics have dismissed Beijing’s talk of de-emphasizing the U.S. dollar, but China is making moves that could soon lead to a convertible yuan

    http://www.businessweek.com/globalbiz/content/may2009/gb20090522_665312.htm

Are the Chinese finally getting serious about loosening their ties to the dollar—and even replacing the greenback with the yuan as the global economy’s reserve currency? The evidence is mounting that they are.

For the last two months, China’s leadership has been complaining about the country’s dangerous dependence on the dollar. Beijing holds $2 trillion in dollar assets, accumulated through years of exports to America and massive purchases of Treasuries by the Chinese government. If Washington can’t rein in its mounting budget deficit, both Treasuries and the greenback could weaken considerably—and the Chinese could be big losers as a result.

The Chinese began generating attention on the issue in March, when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said he was worried that the country’s dollar assets could slide. Ten days later Chinese central bank chief Zhou Xiaochuan suggested replacing the dollar as the international reserve currency. One idea, Zhou said, was to replace the dollar with a basket of currencies supervised by the International Monetary Fund.
    Free Convertibility for the Yuan?

Skeptics said the Chinese were merely talking. The dollar is too entrenched as the international currency of choice, with the U.S. by far the world’s largest economy, went the thinking. And in any case, the Chinese act so deliberately that, even if they did wish to elevate the yuan globally, they wouldn’t do it in the short or medium term. Finally, if the Chinese were to bring the yuan into competition with the dollar as a medium of international trade, they would have to turn the yuan into a convertible currency whose value would be dictated by the market, with traders, investors, governments, and companies around the world freely buying and selling it. Such a loss of control, said many Western investors, would never be allowed by the authoritarian Chinese. It would mean lowering all kinds of financial trade barriers, allowing foreign access to Chinese securities markets and more. No way.

Now some observers are changing their tune. China’s financial moves during the last two months have persuaded Western experts that the nation’s leadership intends to make the yuan freely convertible into other currencies—the first big step toward open confrontation with the dollar—within a few years.

Why have perceptions started to change? Last month, Beijing completed the last of a series of so-called currency swaps—providing yuan to other central banks for use in trade with China—with Argentina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and others. These arrangements theoretically removed any need for these trading partners to use the dollar as an intermediary currency in dealing with China. Last week, Beijing denominated a bilateral trade deal with Brazil in the two countries’ currencies, rather than in dollars; the value of the agreement was not specified. The value of the other agreements comes to $95 billion. By way of comparison, U.S.-Chinese trade amounted to $333 billion in 2008. ….

Is China poised to surpass the United States to become the world’s largest economy? The International Monetary Fund recently predicted that the size of China’s economy would overtake that of the US in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) by 2016.

But a recent co-authored study by Robert Feenstra, an economist at the University of California, Davis, shows that global economic leadership would pass to China in 2014. And, even more radically, Arvind Subramanian of the Peterson Institute of International Economics argues that China actually surpassed the US in PPP terms in 2010.

But China would surpass the US in a relatively short period of time even if we measured both countries’ economies in nominal terms. Assuming that the Chinese and US economies grow, respectively, by eight per cent and three per cent in real terms, that China’s inflation rate is 3.6 per cent and America’s is two per cent (the averages of the past decade), and that the renminbi appreciates against the dollar by three per cent per year (the average of the past six years). China would become the world’s largest economy by 2021. By that time, both countries’ GDP will be about $24 trillion, perhaps triple the size of the third largest economy, either Japan or Germany.

Nearly half of China’s wealthiest citizens are considering emigrating, with the United States and Canada the most popular destinations, according to a new report from the authors of China’s rich list.

The survey by the Bank of China and the Hurun Report, which publishes luxury magazines and runs a research institute, found that 46 percent of Chinese with assets worth more than 10 million yuan ($1.6 million) were considering moving abroad.

Another 14 percent had already begun the process, it said. Many said they were seeking a better education for their children and cited concerns about the security of their assets in China.

Nearly a third of the respondents said they already had investments overseas, in many cases to enable them to emigrate. Some countries offer residency to foreign citizens who are prepared to invest large sums.

High inflation and the difficulty of investing overseas were also cited in the survey, which took in 980 people in 18 Chinese cities.

More than 30 years of booming economic growth have allowed some Chinese to build up vast fortunes once unthinkable in the nominally communist nation.

China now has 271 dollar billionaires, according to Hurun’s 2011 rich list, up from 189 last year, despite the global economic crisis.

The latest report said that 960,000 people in China are now worth more than 10 million yuan, up by 9.7 percent from 2010.

Many of the country’s wealthiest citizens have made their money in China’s construction and property sectors, as well as a growing domestic retail market.

But the rigid education system, rising living costs and widespread corruption have led many to look for homes abroad.

London seeks major role in yuan trading
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16571765

The chancellor hopes that the City of London can win a slug of this international business and augment it”
The UK Treasury has announced plans to make London the leading international centre for trading China’s currency, the yuan, also known as the renminbi.

“London is perfectly placed to act as a gateway for Asian banking and investment in Europe,” said UK Chancellor George Osborne.

Bankers say the plans could bring billions of pounds into the City.

China has been gradually relaxing strict controls on the value of its currency and on flows of capital.

Mr Osborne, who arrived in Hong Kong on Monday at the start of a visit to Asia, said he would be holding talks “on establishing London as the new hub for the renminbi market as a complement to Hong Kong”.

The City, he said, as the world’s largest centre for foreign exchange, was “uniquely placed to assist in the development of this exciting market”.
    Major currency

According to Treasury officials, the new partnership with Hong Kong puts London in pole position to be the major centre for trading the Chinese currency outside China and Hong Kong.

An intergovernmental agreement that London and Hong Kong would work together on yuan trading was reached last summer.

Following the relaxation of strict state controls, the yuan is set to become a major, globally-traded currency, in keeping with China’s status as the world’s second biggest economy.

A recent report by the Chatham House think tank forecast that trade transactions settled in the currency would reach around a trillion dollars (£650bn) by 2020.

For such a vision, we need to make sure our regional politics are tied to our economic development strategies and that we can promote interests that are mutually beneficial for all parties involved. To that end, Nepal needs to persuade its two neighbours to sign a tri-lateral agreement – the Trans-Himalayan Economic Cooperative Agreement (THECA).

Nepalis are aware of the rising economic prowess of China and India at the world stage, and we also love to talk about our strategic location. But in order to translate our rhetoric into reality, we need to have a strategic vision, followed by a set of doable policies.

The key is to build a sense of trust among ourselves by being respectful of each other’s national sensibilities. Nepal cannot afford to use the China versus India card as pendulum diplomacy to suit their domestic political game plan.

China and Japan plan direct currency exchange agreement

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16330574

    December 2011

China and Japan have unveiled plans to promote direct exchange of their currencies in a bid to cut costs for companies and boost bilateral trade.
The deal will allow firms to convert the Chinese and Japanese currencies directly into each other.
Currently businesses in both countries need to buy US dollars before converting them into the desired currency, adding extra costs.
It is the latest step by China as it seeks a more global role for the yuan.
“Given the huge size of the trade volume between Asia’s two biggest economies, this agreement is much more significant than any other pacts China has signed with other nations,” Ren Xianfang of IHS Global Insight was quoted as saying by the Bloomberg news agency.
China is Japan’s biggest trading partner. According to the Japan External Trade Organization, trade between the two countries stood at 26.5tn yen ($339bn; £218bn) in 2010.

    More collaboration

The plans were announced during a visit to China by Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and after a meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. ….

Feb 17 (Reuters) – China and Japan will begin work this month to promote the direct exchange of their currencies as trade between their two countries grows, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Friday.

The bulk of trade between the world’s second-largest and third-largest economies is currently settled in dollars, due in large part to financial regulations and market custom.
But more direct exchange of the yen and the yuan would lower currency risks and settlement costs, and two governments agreed in December to take steps to facilitate such trade.

Nikkei said a bilateral working committee will look at encouraging investment in banking systems, boosting the number of foreign exchange dealers, as well as review regulations and consider setting up an offshore yuan trading center in the Tokyo foreign exchange market.

Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi will visit China on the weekend to discuss bilateral financial cooperation and Europe’s debt crisis. China has become Japan’s biggest export destination and No.1 trading partner, taking over the United States.

The gradual relaxation on the use of the yuan in international transactions has led to an increase of Chinese trade now being settled in yuan.

Other countries including Britain, Singapore and Taipei are seeking a share of the growing offshore yuan business, while Chinese authorities push on with a series of initiatives to internationalise the currency.

The committee, which will first meet in China, will be comprised of officials from Japan’s Finance Ministry, the Financial Services Agency, the Bank of Japan and China’s central bank, the newspaper

Sanusi Says Nigeria Plans to Get Yuan to 10% of Reserves Soon as Possible
By Fion Li and Sophie Leung – Sep 7, 2011 5:40 AM PT

Nigeria plans to reach a target of holding 10 percent of its foreign-exchange reserves in yuan “as soon as possible,” said central bank Governor Lamido Sanusi.
The nation plans to start holding the Chinese currency next quarter, predicting it will appreciate given the strength of China’s economy, Sanusi said today in an interview in Hong Kong, adding that the target was set more than a year ago. He said the yuan will “inevitably” become a reserve currency and that increased convertibility outside China had boosted its appeal.

The $32 billion in Nigerian reserves are now 79 percent held in U.S. dollars, with the rest largely in euros, Swiss francs and British pounds. Asia’s central banks are also diversifying their growing reserves into yuan debt. Philippine Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said on Sept. 3 that buying yuan may be “prudent.”
“Confidence in China doesn’t mean lack of confidence in America,” Sanusi said. “Europe and America will continue to be important parts of the world. Having said that, it will be almost living in a dream world to ignore China. It’s the second- largest economy in the world and it’s well-managed.”
The yuan, a denomination of the renminbi, was the biggest gainer in August among Asia’s 10 most-used currencies excluding the yen, having advanced 0.9 percent versus the dollar as Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating and a rout in global equities prompted investors to pull back from riskier assets.
    Yuan for Oil
The foreign-currency reserves of Africa’s biggest oil producer slid 11 percent to $32.3 billion in the year to Sept. 2, according to data from the Abuja-based Central Bank of Nigeria. Nigerian benchmark Bonny Light crude gained about 51 percent in the same period. The country relies on crude exports for 95 percent of its foreign-exchange earnings.

Nigeria may accept yuan payment for China’s oil purchases in the country and that could be one of the ways to build up the central bank’s yuan holdings, Sanusi said.
“There’s no reason, based on history, why we cannot for instance receive renminbi for our sales of oil to China,” he said. Bilateral trade between China and Nigeria was a record $7.5 billion last year.
“While Nigeria’s current bilateral trade with China is much smaller than its U.S. dollar trade in oil, the China- Nigeria trade numbers are expected to grow in coming years,” Sebastian Spio-Garbrah, managing director of New York-based DaMina Advisors LLP, a frontier-market risk adviser, wrote in a report to clients today.
    Emerging-Markets Problem
“Sanusi’s actions underscore a growing problem that all central banks in Africa and other major emerging markets will face in the coming years as their trade with China increases,” Spio-Garbrah wrote. “More African countries are expected to follow Nigeria’s lead in coming months — probably Angola, Algeria and South Africa.”……

Nigeria, West Africa’s largest economy, is selling US dollars for Chinese yuan.

…But, in a sense, Khan says, China has already displaced the dollar in Africa’s
more blighted corners: Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sudan. In each,
China, is constructing mammoth infrastructure projects — roads, railways,
ports, stadiums — in return for commodities like cobalt and bauxite.
