“ Lethal Electrocution in Bagan. True story? ”
Feb 03, 2012, 9:44 AM

Flew back to Boston few days ago, I was still in shock and couldn’t believe if this story really happened to me and my family. Ran in to my advisor, he hugged me tightly with condolence. I shared my story, his tears made me close my eyes for a while. The end of our conversation came the conclusion that I should share my story. People should know about my story and this story should lead to some CHANGES. The similar story shouldn’t happen again to anyone.

I’ve finished my med school years ago, spent years in rural area in Thailand at a district hospital helping the poor and underprivileged. The experience from those days are priceless and all rushed into my head at my crucial time.

Morning of Jan2, 2012 after watching sunrise together at Shwesandaw pagoda, we took few hours break for breakfast and shower at our hotel, Aureum Palace Hotel, one of the most luxurious hotel in Myanmar. I still had 20 minutes left till meeting time after shower and breakfast so I took a nap. My sister shouted from the phone in hotel. “Sis wake up! Mama had electrocution from shower”. We shouted to our young bro who was still in the shower and ran fastest in our lives from our Deluxe room to Lotus Villa which is half a mile away. I wished it was a minor injury but picture of my dad doing CPR to my mom brought me back to reality. I checked her vital signs just to learn that she’s arrested for big while already.

My dad told the story with shaky voice. He heard my mom screaming from the shower room. He thought she was falling cause the floor was slippery. Unfortunately, when he tried to help her he got electric shock through his hand when he tried to remove the shower head from my mom’s hand. Telling the story he showed me a blistering burning wound on his right hand.

My sister and I continued CPR while my younger brother who arrived few minutes later tried to contact medical helicopter from Thailand to pick us up. Hotel officers informed that doctor is on the way. She walked in with nothing significant but a stethoscope and useless stuff for this situation. We need a defibrillator. We need so many other things. I yelled, we need a well-equiped ambulance. There’s no such thing there. We were transferred to hospital with a van provided by hotel. I asked hotel to call the hospital that we are getting there and be prepared. We continued CPR along the 15-min drive to hospital.

My heart was broken in to pieces when I realized how under standard the hospital was. The only hospital in 500 kilometers distance, has no EKG monitoring. No cardiac board. My instinct made me order IV, adrenaline and started intubation.

After a while I realized nobody cares to CPR except our family, they said my mom was dead before arrival. Other than our local tour leader and a doctor, nobody speaks English. It took me a while to beg for help from the doctor as they wanted to stop resuscitation.

The medical helicopter from Thailand that should arrive in an hour after calling couldn’t land in Myanmar without at least 24-hr prior authorization. It will take at least 5 hours to get to other hospital and there’s no well-equipped ambulance.

It took us a while to accept reality that we were losing our mom. Nothing is going to be the same from now on.
