Bronze Age woman in Scotland was an early immigrant, DNA analysis reveals
    By Jack Guy, CNN

Updated 12:23 PM ET, Mon December 3, 2018
(CNN)Archeologists examining the remains of a woman who died more than 4,250 years ago have discovered surprising new information, thanks to DNA analysis.

The remains were discovered at Achavanich in Caithness, Scotland, in 1987, and now researchers are able to paint a detailed picture of the woman and her life.
Lead study author Maya Hoole said that Ava, as the woman is known, had black hair, brown eyes and a complexion similar to that of people who currently live in southern Europe.
She had previously been depicted with red hair and blue eyes, but forensic artist Hew Morrison produced a more accurate reconstruction of Ava’s face.

France Deploys 89,000 Cops, 80 Armored Vehicles in Preparation for Yellow Vest Revolution
ByAdam GoldbergPosted on December 8, 2018
From an outside perspective, it’s not that easy to tell what is happening in France right now. The first reaction a lot of people seem to be having to this situation is that the French are doing something about being so fed up with high taxes. If that’s to a great extent what this is about, it seems good that people are trying to do something about it.

It was just reported that security forces in Paris are getting ready to deploy up to 80 armored vehicles, in an attempt to protect property in anticipation of “extreme violence” and riots.

Saturday is when the next Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) protest is set to take place. The vehicle known as a Berliet VXB-170, more commonly known as a VBRG is set to be deployed in areas they claim are most likely to be vandalized or suffer from violence. The VBRG vehicles were designed in the 1960’s, and the 12 ton, 19 foot long tanks are equipped with a 7.62mm machine gun, and a grenade launcher with a caliber or either 37mm or 40mm

Breast cancer risk may increase after childbirth, study finds
    December 11, 2018,
New research led by doctors from the University of North Carolina and the Institute of Cancer Research in London shows women who have babies may have a greater risk for breast cancer than women without children.

The study found that risk for breast cancer goes up for 24 years after a woman’s last child, peaking at five years after childbirth. The risk starts to fall after 24 years and is at its lowest 35 years out.

Researchers looked at data from nearly 890,000 women of different ages and found the risk continues for more than two decades after childbirth. Dr. David Agus, the director of USC Norris Westside Cancer Center, told “CBS This Morning” the study should change how doctors screen for breast cancer.

“If your last child was at age 35, we may start screening at age 40 instead of classically at age 50 because the risks may go up after five years out. And so it’s very important now that doctors ask this question and put the into the history of the patient,” Agus said.

For my birthday this year, I did a 10-day silent vipassana meditation, this time in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar . We went into silence on the night of my birthday, the 19th. Here’s what I know

Most meditation methods end with a goal of strengthening concentration: focus on the breath. This was not Gautama’s goal. He wanted to end his attachment to craving (of pleasure) and aversion (of pain) by experiencing it directly. His theory was ending attachment ends his misery.

Vipassana would likely be good for those suffering chronic pain to help manage it. That’s not the goal of course, but definitely a simple practice to help. Being able to sit without moving at all for over an hour through pain definitely teaches you a lot about your potential.

Japan Embraces Commercial Whaling, Pulls Out Of Global Alliance That Banned It
    December 26, 20188:41 AM ET
Japan is withdrawing from an international group that bans commercial whaling, saying it will resume commercial hunts for the first time in 30 years next July. Japan will leave the International Whaling Commission, which put a moratorium on commercial whaling in the 1980s.

“Japan argues that it has a long tradition of whaling, even though Japanese today eat very little whale meat,” NPR’s Anthony Kuhn reports from Tokyo.

In a notable shift, Japan also said it will no longer conduct controversial hunts in the Antarctic Ocean — where its fleet of whaling ships have killed 333 whales in each of the past two years, under the justification of performing whale research.

After the withdrawal becomes official on June 30, “Japan will conduct commercial whaling within Japan’s territorial sea and its exclusive economic zone,” said Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.

News of Japan’s plan to exit the IWC first emerged last week. Suga made the move official on Wednesday, saying the commission is focused only on banning whaling, not on regulating the practice to ensure sustainable whale populations.

China Mission in Lunar Orbit and May Race SpaceX for Next Lunar Manned MissionBrian Wang | December 12, 2018
China’s four-ton lander entered lunar orbit on Wednesday. They should be landing on the moon January 3rd, 2019. If the landing and operation is successful, this will be the first time a lunar rover lands on the far side of the moon.

China has another satellite in lunar orbit to relay communications from Earth to the rover. The Queqiao relay satellite is at the second Lagrange point (L2).

China plans to launch Chang’e-5 in 2019. It would be an unmanned lunar sample return mission.

China plans a permanent robotic lunar outpost in about 10 years. There could be European Space Agency partnership with China’s moon base.
