TAIPEI, TAIWAN (TTNews) – The largest Water Splashing Festival of the year will be held in Jhonghe City this Sunday! Prepare yourself to be splashed! The Songkran Festival, also known as the Water Splashing Festival, is the traditional Thai New Year’s Day broadly celebrated in most of Southeast Asian countries, such as Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, etc.

The Nanshijiao area of Jhonghe City has the highest density of Burmese and Thai population in Taiwan. To offer a solution to Burmese and Thai nationals’ homesickness, Jhong City Office has been organizing the Water Splashing Festival every April since 2000. Due to its cultural significance, the scale of the event has also expanded each year, becoming one of the well-known activities in Taipei County.

The Water Splashing Festival in April is an equivalent to the Spring Festival of Thailand and Myanmar. On this day, people will roam the streets and alleys with containers of water or water guns, splashing water at each other. The throwing of water represents the idea of washing away the bad luck and welcoming a whole new year with cleanliness.

Aside from the throwing of water, there will be a Southeast Asian gourmet fair held on the same day on Huaxin Street, offering a tempting array of classic and representative Southeast Asian delicacies for both local residents and visitors. This year’s opening ceremony will begin with the traditional Myanmar praying ritual and shouting tiger and awakening lion dance performances. In the meantime, festival-goers can also participate in a fun-filled array of activities and have the chance winning the big prize. This is absolutely a great opportunity for the general public to experience exotic culture and customs.
