A look at what might happen if Catalonia goes it alone

 October 3 at 2:57 AM
MADRID — The northeastern region of Catalonia, one of Spain’s autonomous regions, is threatening to declare its independence from Spain following a disputed referendum that, it says, gave it a mandate to break away.Spain, which declared the referendum illegal and invalid, says it will do all to maintain the country’s unity and keep hold of the region of 7.5 million people centered around the port city of Barcelona. The two would seem to be about to enter uncharted waters. Here’s a look at how Spain got to this point and what may happen next.

DECLARING INDEPENDENCE

Catalan regional President Carles Puigdemont says he will keep his pledge to declare independence unilaterally following a claimed win for the “Yes” side in Sunday’s disputed referendum.

Did Iraq’s Kurds lose their big bet on independence?
October 02, 2017

Last Wednesday and Thursday marked an historic time for Iraq’s Kurdish population, and indeed for Kurds worldwide, who one day hope that their dream of an independent Kurdish state will be fulfilled. After a months-long preparation by Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani to organize an independence referendum for the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region, Iraq’s Kurds eagerly ran to the polls and overwhelmingly voted to chart their own way. Over 92% of voters threw their support behind independence, a figure not all that surprising but one that was received with anger by nearly every government in the Middle East.

While millions of Kurds in the region were celebrating their Iraqi brethren’s declaration of independence with dances, parades, and celebratory gunfire—even Iranian Kurds were excited, perhaps wondering when they too could organize a referendum process—Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was deliberating with his national security aides about how to respond.
