Trump targets legal migrants who get food aid

    12 August 2019
US President Donald Trump’s administration is to make it more difficult for poorer legal migrants to extend their visas or gain permanent resident status (a green card).

The rule targets migrants who rely on public benefits, such as food aid or public housing, for more than a year.

Their applications will be rejected if the government decides they are likely to rely on public assistance in future.

The rule change would reinforce “ideals of self-sufficiency,” officials said.

China is removing religious references from children’s books, according to a watchdog group.

The Ministry of Education is censoring words like “Bible,” “God,” and “Christ” from classic children’s stories designed to help middle schoolers “understand other cultures,” Asia News reported.

ICE raids on Mississippi food processing plants result in 680 arrests

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Wednesday that its officers had raided seven food processing plants in Mississippi and detained approximately 680 “removable aliens” in what a federal prosecutor described as “the largest single-state immigration enforcement operation in our nation’s history.”

Nearly 600 ICE agents swarmed the plants in Bay Springs, Carthage, Canton, Morton, Pelahatchie and Sebastapol, surrounding the perimeters to keep workers from fleeing.

Less Sex, Fewer Babies: Blame The Internet And Career Priorities
    August 6, 2019
Many young men and women across the country have been having less sex than those in previous generations. Almost a quarter of adults under 30 didn’t have sex in the last year — a record high, according to the 2018 General Social Survey from NORC at the University of Chicago.

There are reasons besides just online dating, but experts and journalists have declared that America is in the middle of a “sex drought” or “sex recession.”

Humanity May Be Alone In The Universe

The truth of the matter is, this: we don’t know. We know the Universe gives intelligent life a very large number of chances, on the order of 10^22. And we know that there’s only a small probability of going from a chance at life to a spacefaring, technologically advanced civilization. What we don’t know is whether that chance is something like 10^-3, 10^-20, 10^-50, or any number in between (or even worse). We know that life like humans arose once, at least, so the probability must be non-zero. But beyond that? We need data. And no amount of speculation or pronouncements will substitute for that information; we’ve got to find it to know. Anything else, despite what the New York Times claims, is nothing more than guesswork.

Boris Johnson faces second referendum demand following Sinn Fein meeting

    Wednesday 31 July 2019
oris Johnson is facing growing demands for constitutional votes from two fronts this week as Sinn Fein called for a referendum on Irish unity if the UK leaves the EU with no deal.

The Prime Minister was in Belfast today where he met with Ulster leaders at Stormont in an attempt to kick-start negotiations on reviving the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald claimed “constitutional change is in the air” following the meeting, where the party advised Mr Johnson that it would demand a referendum if the UK crashed out of the EU – an event which could lead to the closure of the open border between the province and the Republic of Ireland.

The Scottish Government has already stated its desire to hold a second referendum on independence in the wake of Brexit.

‘Greenland belongs to Greenland’: Denmark says selling world’s largest island to US is absurd
    PUBLISHED SUN, AUG 18 2019
“Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday confirmed media reports earlier in the week that Trump had privately discussed with his advisers the idea of buying Greenland.
“I don’t want to predict an outcome, I’m just saying the president, who knows a thing or two about buying real estate, wants to take a look at a Greenland purchase,” Kudlow told Fox News.

China retaliates with tariffs on $75 billion of US goods
Yong Xiong and Victoria Cavaliere, CNN Business

Updated 2:02 PM ET, Fri August 23, 2019

Beijing (CNN)The US-China trade war ratcheted up yet again on Friday, with Beijing unveiling a new round of retaliatory tariffs on about $75 billion worth of US goods.

China will place additional tariffs of 5% or 10% on US imports starting on September 1st, according to a statement posted by China’s Finance Ministry.
The Ministry also announced plans to resume tariffs on US imports of automobiles and automobile parts. The tariffs would be 25% for vehicles or 5% on parts, and would take effect on December 15th. The new tariffs will target 5,078 products, including soybeans, coffee, whiskey, seafood and crude oil.
“We don’t need China and, frankly, would be far better off without them,” Trump wrote. He also “ordered” American companies “to immediately start looking for an alternative to China.”
The National Retail Federation issued a statement calling the demand “unrealistic.”

Families Go Deep in Debt to Stay in the Middle Class
Wages stalled but costs haven’t, so people increasingly rent or finance what their parents might have owned outright
By AnnaMaria Andriotis, Ken Brown and Shane Shifflett
    Aug. 1, 2019 11:35 am ET

The American middle class is falling deeper into debt to maintain a middle-class lifestyle.

Cars, college, houses and medical care have become steadily more costly, but incomes have been largely stagnant for two decades, despite a recent uptick. Filling the gap between earning and spending is an explosion of finance into nearly every corner of the consumer economy.

Children of US troops born overseas will no longer get automatic American citizenship, Trump administration says

Children born to US service members and government employees overseas will no longer be automatically considered citizens of the United States, according to policy alert issued by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on Wednesday.

Previously, children born to US citizen parents were considered to be “residing in the United States,” and therefore would be automatically given citizenship under Immigration and Nationality Act 320.

‘This is very scary’: Greenlanders on Trump wanting to buy their island
    By Ashitha Nagesh
    BBC News
    24 August 2019
This week has seen one of the most bizarre diplomatic rows of Donald Trump’s presidency.

Insults have been exchanged, tweets have been sent, major visits have been cancelled – and this all happened because the US president said he wanted to buy Greenland.

It started with an article in the Wall Street Journal which, quoting sources, claimed the US president had “with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory”. Initially dismissed by many as rumour, the claims were later confirmed by Mr Trump himself.

Denmark’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen was swift and unambiguous in her response, calling his idea of buying the island “absurd”. Shortly afterwards, Mr Trump cancelled a state visit to Denmark that had been planned for 2 September, accusing Ms Frederiksen of being “nasty”.

So, what do Greenlanders make of all of this?

How Eating Less Meat Could Help Protect the Planet From Climate Change
    BY ABIGAIL ABRAMS
    AUGUST 8, 2019

By dramatically changing the food we eat as well as the way it is grown and produced, humans can help stop the devastating impacts of climate change according to the latest report by the United Nations body on climate science.

More than 100 scientists from 52 countries put together the report, which was published by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It takes a look at how land-use practices have impacted the planet and finds that deforestation, agriculture and other human activities threaten the world’s ability to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees celsius, the goal of the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

However, the report is not all bad news and finds that if more of the world’s population shifts toward plant-based diets and reduces their meat consumption, it could significantly boost the planet’s ability to fight climate change.

“Some dietary choices require more land and water, and cause more emissions of heat-trapping gases than others,” Debra Roberts, co-chair of IPCC Working Group II, said in a statement on Thursday.

The IPCC report says that if people eat more plant-based foods and sustainably produced foods from animals, that will “present major opportunities for adaptation and mitigation while generating significant co-benefits in terms of human health.”

Article 370: India strips disputed Kashmir of special status
    5 August 2019

India’s government has revoked part of the constitution that gives Indian-administered Kashmir special status, prompting fears of unrest.

Article 370 is sensitive because it guarantees significant autonomy for the Muslim-majority state.

The measure was accompanied by a telecoms and media blackout which began on Sunday evening.

There is a long-running insurgency on the Indian side. India and Pakistan fought several conflicts over Kashmir.

For many Kashmiris, Article 370 was the main justification for being a part of India and by revoking it, the BJP has irrevocably changed Delhi’s relationship with the region, the BBC’s Geeta Pandey reports from Delhi.

Meanwhile India’s parliament is expected to pass a bill splitting Indian-administered Kashmir into two territories governed directly by Delhi.

Pakistan condemned India’s decision to revoke the special status of its part of Kashmir as illegal, saying it would “exercise all possible options” to counter it.

“India is playing a dangerous game which will have serious consequences for regional peace and stability,” said Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Quresh

Japan officially ousts South Korea from export whitelist
Economy minister rejects linking intelligence-sharing pact to trade status

    JUNICHI SUGIHARA, Nikkei staff writer
    AUGUST 28, 2019 02:28 JST
TOKYO — The removal of South Korea from a Japanese whitelist of preferred trading partners took effect on Wednesday local time, a step that has elicited a strong backlash from Seoul.

The action represents the second round of trade restrictions Japan put into force against South Korea. Hiroshige Seko, Japan’s minister of economy, trade and industry, downplayed the effect this move will have on bilateral ties when he spoke with reporters Tuesday following a cabinet meeting.

“This is for the purpose of executing export oversight in an appropriate manner, and any impact on Japan-South Korean relations is not part of the consideration,” Seko said.

The removal, which was approved by Japan’s cabinet on Aug. 2, comes shortly after Seoul decided Thursday to stop sharing intelligence with Tokyo under the General Security of Military Information Agreement.

South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon told his country’s lawmakers Monday that the government would be willing to consider extending the pact, which expires in November, if Japan withdraws the trade restrictions, Yonhap News Agency reported.
