Myanmar chemical plant explosion causes loss of 2.5 mln USD

Yangon (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) – The chemical plant explosion in Chauk, central Myanmar`s Magway region, on Thursday has caused loss of 2.5 million U.S. dollars, the Fire Department said Friday.

The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) chemical plant under Myanmar Paper and Chemical Industries of the Ministry of Industry exploded thrice on Thursday afternoon.

The explosion, caused by leakage of working solution from an oxidation tower of the main unit, triggered outbreak of fire, official sources confirmed.

The fire lasted more than four hours before it was under control and put out, local media reported.

Despite no major damage to other buildings in the factory yard, windowpanes were shattered by the explosion.

Five factory workers and one fire brigade member sustained injuries, with one chemically intoxicated staff being admitted to the local hospital.

The plant lies between Sichopin and Yedwin villages in Chauk.

FIVE people were last week injured in an explosion and fire at a hydrogen peroxide factory in Magwe Region, state media reported.
The explosions occurred at the Ministry of Industry’s Paper and Home Utility Industry factory near Yay Zin village, between Chauk and Salay, about 1pm on August 2.
The fire burned was brought under control about 4:30pm and extinguished at 6pm, causing K2.216 billion (US$2.54 million) damage, a fire brigade official said.
State-run newspaper The Mirror reported that five workers and a fireman were injured in the accident. One worker suffered serious injuries and was transferred to Chauk Township Hospital.
U Kyaw Shwe, a resident of Yay Zin village, said no casualties had been reported.
“We heard five explosions and then the flames spread up into the sky. Local officials told residents to move to a safe place because they said there could be more explosions,” he said.
U Tin Min, region officer for the Magwe Region Fire Services Department, said the explosion was caused by a chemical leakage in the main unit building. The chemicals then mixed with hot machinery and ignited.
