When you’re a world leader in the company of an English monarch, you can look but you can’t touch.
President Donald Trump on Monday appeared to lightly touch Queen Elizabeth II on the back during the state banquet as he visited the UK, which is a violation of royal protocol.

Eating White Meat Is Just as Bad for Your Cholesterol as Eating Red Meat, Study Suggests
The study found that diets high in saturated fats will lead to higher cholesterol — regardless of the source
By Rachel DeSantis June 05, 2019 04:38 PM
Consuming white meat has the same effect on cholesterol levels as eating red meat, according to research published this week.
Red meat has long been associated with high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease due to its high levels of saturated fat, says the American Heart Association.
But according to the study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, red meat’s effects on cholesterol are just the same as white meat products like chicken and turkey when compared with people who get their protein elsewhere, like from vegetables.
The study looked at more than 100 healthy men and women aged 21 to 65 in the San Francisco Bay Area between 2012 and 2016.

Pentagon eyes rare earth supplies in Africa in push away from China
US Department of Defence has held talks with Malawi’s Mkango Resources and other rare earth miners across the globe about supplies of strategic minerals
Push comes as China threatens to curb exports to US rare earths, which are used in a range of military equipment and hi-tech consumer electronics
Published: 7:31am, 6 Jun, 2019
The US Department of Defence has held talks with Malawi’s Mkango Resources and other rare earth miners across the globe about their supplies of strategic minerals, part of a plan to find diversified reserves outside China, a department official said on Wednesday.
The push comes as China threatens to curb exports to the United States of rare earths, a group of 17 minerals used in a plethora of military equipment and hi-tech consumer electronics.
Although China contains only a third of the world’s rare earth reserves, it accounts for 80 per cent of US imports of minerals because it controls nearly all of the facilities to process the material, according to US Geological Survey data.
“We are looking for any source of supply outside China. We want diversity. We don’t want a single-source producer,” Jason Nie, a material engineer with the Pentagon’s Defence Logistics Agency, said on the sidelines of the Argus US Specialty Metals conference in Chicago.

California Dems agree to full health benefits for many low-income illegal immigrants, in swipe at Trump
In a stance to distance itself from President Trump’s administration, California is set to become the first state in the country to pay for tens of thousands of illegal immigrants to have full health benefits.
Under an agreement between Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democrats in the state legislature, low-income adults between the ages of 19 and 25 living in California illegally would be eligible for California’s Medicaid program, known as Medi-Cal. The deal emerged as part of a broader $213 billion budget.
The plan would take effect in January 2020, the Sacramento Bee reported.
State officials have estimated the benefits would be available to about 90,000 low-income illegal immigrants at a cost of $98 million per year.
“While it’s not all we sought, it will provide a real tangible difference for people, especially for those around and below poverty and for middle income families who don’t get any help under the federal law,” Anthony Wright, executive director of advocacy group Health Access, said. Indeed, a family of four earning as much as six times the federal poverty level — or more than $150,000 a year — would be eligible to get about $100 a month from the government to help pay their monthly health insurance premiums.
To pay for part of it, the state agreed to start taxing people who don’t have health insurance. It’s a revival of the individual-mandate penalty that had been on the books nationwide under former President Barack Obama’s health-care law until Republicans in Congress eliminated it as part of the 2017 overhaul to the tax code.

The Hong Kong Protests Could Be a Prelude to a Big Showdown Over Taiwan
By JOSHUA KEATING
JUNE 17, 2019
Advocates of democracy in Hong Kong notched an impressive victory in their long-running fight with the People’s Republic of China last weekend when the city’s pro-Beijing chief executive, Carrie Lam, indefinitely shelved a controversial extradition law in response to mass protests that saw as many as a million people in the streets at their height. It’s a devastating setback for Lam, but less so for China and its leader, Xi Jinping. Thanks to China’s tight information controls, there’s little risk of unrest spreading to the mainland. And while Chinese leaders would like to accelerate Hong Kong’s integration into the Chinese political system, the territory is becoming more economically (and physically) integrated every day, and its special semiautonomous status is due to end in 2047. China has been waiting since the 19th century to take full control of Hong Kong, and it can afford to be patient for a little longer.

Exclusive: U.S. tells India it is mulling caps on H-1B visas to deter data rules – sources
Neha Dasgupta, Aditya Kalra
5 MIN READ
NEW DELHI (Reuters) – The United States has told India it is considering caps on H-1B work visas for nations that force foreign companies to store data locally, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, widening the two countries’ row over tariffs and trade.
..
Two senior Indian government officials said on Wednesday they were briefed last week on a U.S. government plan to cap H-1B visas issued each year to Indians at between 10% and 15% of the annual quota. There is no current country-specific limit on the 85,000 H-1B work visas granted each year, and an estimated 70% go to Indians.

McDonald’s started using fresh meat. Here’s what happened to sales
Danielle Wiener-Bronner byline
By Danielle Wiener-Bronner, CNN Business
Updated 8:43 AM ET, Mon June 24, 2019
New York (CNN Business)Fresh beef is helping McDonald’s sell more burgers and gain market share.
Last year, the burger chain switched to fresh beef quarter-pound burgers from frozen at most of its stores in the contiguous United States. That change has led to a 30% spike in sales of quarter pounders on average over the past 12 months, the company said Monday. It also helped McDonald’s (MCD) burgers gain market share in what the industry calls the “informal eating out” category for the first time in five years, the company said.

As Beijing floods the Mekong with much-needed cash, the US finds itself pushing back against the tide to retain influence
