Regulators change guidelines on child car seats

Thinking of getting a new car seat for your kid? You might want to wait.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has revised its child restraint guidelines so that they categorize by age rather than by type of child seat. The upshot? “NHTSA is advising parents and care givers to keep children in each restraint type, including rear-facing, forward-facing and booster seats, for as long as possible before moving them up to the next type of seat,” the agency says in a statement.

Even if your child is getting older, that rear-facing seat might still be the best choice, the agency says, as long as your growing baby still fits within the height and weight requirements. NHTSA says the guideline change follows the latest advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“Safety is our highest priority,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “The ‘best’ car seat is the one that fits your child, fits your vehicle and one you will use every time your child is in the car.”

There are some places where the advice about age hasn’t changed. For instance, NHTSA says all children under 13 should ride in the back seat and children in rear-facing car seats should never be placed in a seat where an air bag could suddenly inflate.
