Valentine’s Day spending: $17.6 billion
St. Petersburg, Florida — Hello big spender! Americans plan to spend more money this year on Valentine’s Day, than they have in the last ten years according to the National Retail Federation.
An NRF survey shows we’ll spend a total of $17.6 billion on the holiday, averaging at about $126.03 per person.
This isn’t just a holiday for the hitched. People also plan to spend on their children, friends and yes…even their pets!
Here’s how the survey breaks down the average person’s spending: $74.12 on their spouse or significant other, $25.25 on children, parents or other family members, $6.92 on friends and $4.52 on pets.
Jewelry reigns king again. The survey shows people intend to spend $4.1 billion on jewelry, up from $3.5 billion last year, and $3.5 billion on a special evening out.
We’ll also shell out a total of $18. billion on flowers and $1.5 billion on candy!
Here’s another interesting number, most people will be buying Valentine’s Day gifts at discount stores!
