Taiwan comes between the U.S. and China again

Washington’s decision to OK a $6-billion arms deal has upset Beijing. But Chinese policies are mostly to blame for the tension.

Not surprisingly, China is responding badly to the Pentagon’s $6-billion arms sale to Taiwan. The Beijing government has suspended security exchanges with the Pentagon and promised to sanction American defense companies.

Obama to meet Dalai Lama on Feb 18: White House

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House announced on Thursday that President Barack Obama and the Dalai Lama would meet on February 18, despite China’s warning that such talks could hurt already-strained Sino-U.S. relations.

US envoy to discuss Japan bases

The US assistant secretary of state for East Asia is due to arrive in Tokyo on Monday for talks on the future of American military bases in Japan.

Kurt Campbell’s visit comes after thousands of people from across Japan joined protests at the weekend against plans to relocate a US base on the southern island of Okinawa.

Some 47,000 US troops are stationed in Japan, with more than half on the island.
