Yellowstone volcano SHOCK: Eruption ‘can kill 5 BILLION’ in fiery fallout, warns geologist
YELLOWSTONE volcano threatens to kill more than five billion people and plunge the world into a nuclear winter the next time it erupts, a geologist has gravely warned.

Yellowstone volcano in the northwest US is among the biggest potential cataclysms waiting to be unleashed. Located among the picturesque mountains and valleys of Yellowstone National Park, the supervolcano is active and under constant surveillance. Yellowstone volcano is believed to have last erupted 640,000, 1.3 million and 2.1 million years ago. And should another caldera-forming eruption go off in the near future, a geologist from the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland, fears the lethal consequences will be felt across the globe.

Trump declares national emergency over IT threats
    5/15/19

President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency to protect US computer networks from “foreign adversaries”.

The president signed an executive order which effectively bars US companies from using foreign telecoms believed to pose a security risk to the country.

Mr Trump does not name any company specifically in the order.

However, analysts suggest it is mainly directed at Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

Myanmar Airlines pilot saves all 89 on board with nail-biting touchdown after landing gear fails
    PUBLISHEDMAY 12, 2019, 2:22 PM SGT

YANGON (AFP) – A Myanmar pilot saved the day after his aircraft’s landing gear failed, forcing the jet into an emergency landing with no front wheels on Sunday (May 12) morning, an official said.

The nail-biting touchdown – in which nobody was injured – was the second instance of a malfunctioning flight in less than a week within the country.

The Myanmar Airlines flight UB-103 – an Embraer-190 model – was grounded at around 9am in Mandalay (1030am Singapore time), a city popular among foreign tourists, with all 89 people on board, including seven crew members, safe.

Hong Liang is leaving. Very soon, he will become the 19th Chinese ambassador to bid farewell to Myanmar upon completing his duties.

As of Wednesday, the Chinese Embassy in Yangon still hadn’t officially announced his departure, but the country’s state-run media recently began referring to him as the “outgoing ambassador”.

Thai English-language daily The Nation to end print edition

Thailand’s English newspaper The Nation is displayed in a cafe in a hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, Thursday, May 16, 2019. The management of The Nation – founded in 1971 and one of Thailand’s two English language dailies _ said that due to falling revenues, the publication of the printed paper edition of the newspaper will cease by the end of June, but it will continue to be published only online. (Sakchai Lalit/Associated Press)

BANGKOK — The Nation, one of Thailand’s two English-language dailies, announced Thursday it will stop publishing its print edition by the end of June but will continue with an online version.

The CEO of the Nation Multimedia Group, Somchai Meesaen, said the newspaper will switch to digital platforms starting July 1 because its profit has declined in the past decade.

“It will be The Nation’s new step,” he said on a program on the group’s television channel, confirming reports that had circulated in other media a day earlier.

The Nation was founded in 1971 largely as a progressive alternative to the English-language market-leading Bangkok Post, which was seen as too conservative as pro-democracy activists were struggling against a military dictatorship.

The Nation for many years was a gadfly to the more established Post, which survives it, and was rarely financially strong, though it launched a companion television channel in 2000.

Climate change could raise sea levels by 7 feet by 2100, shocking study reveals
Ocean levels are rising due to climate change and the long-held view is that sea levels would rise nearly three feet by the year 2100. A startling new study has suggested that view is woefully incorrect. Instead, sea levels could rise more than double that amount if global temperatures rise more than expected.

If sea levels were to rise by more than two meters (6.5 feet) that the study’s authors believe is possible, an event they said “lies within the 90 percent uncertainty bounds,” the devastation could be catastrophic. A rise in temperatures by 5 degrees Celsius would cause significant declines in ice levels in Greenland, as well as Antarctica. At the 2 degree Celsius level, Greenland would be the major concern in contributing to the rise in sea levels.

IF HUAWEI LOSES ARM’S CHIP DESIGNS, IT’S TOAST

HOW DO YOU kill a company? The answer, in the context of Chinese electronics giant Huawei, appears to be depravation, removing ready access to the elements that distinguish smartphones from very expensive chunks of anodized aluminum and glass. The latest blow: Chip designer ARM has reportedly severed ties with the company. Huawei could arguably survive without Google. Without ARM? Not so much.

It’s important to clarify that nothing at this point is certain, or permanent. The BBC first reported ARM’s move Wednesday morning, citing an internal memo that noted ARM’s use of “US origin technology,” which makes it subject to a sweeping ban put in place by the Trump administration. ARM finally confirmed the ban Wednesday afternoon. As it did with Google, though, the US Commerce Department could grant a waiver that allows ARM to continue servicing Huawei. And broader tensions between China and the US could otherwise resolve, potentially taking some of the pressure off Huawei.

Canada tries to avoid an all-out trash “war” with the Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte

    By Meghan Mistry

    May 22, 2019 / 10:25 AM / CBS News

Canada will take back dozens of shipping containers full of trash from the Philippines “sooner than later,” a Philippine official said this week. Canada’s agreement to take back the garbage, which has been rotting for up to six years in Manila, may end a battle, but the wider war is just beginning as wealthy nations face mounting resistance from developing ones fed up with being dumping grounds.

“The [Philippine] Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement that the Canadian government has already directed a shipping company to get the trash back,” Philippine presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said on Tuesday. The Philippine government recalled its ambassador to Canada to force the country to take the trash back.

When the 103 containers arrived in Manila in 2013 and 2014, they were falsely declared as containing recyclable plastics. An investigation later revealed the trash included household waste, including dirty diapers.

Trump Outlines ‘Merit-Based’ Immigration Plan, Still Far From Becoming Law

    May 16, 20195:00 AM ET
President Trump has announced an immigration proposal that would dramatically reshape the legal immigration system in the United States.
The plan would prioritize merit-based immigration, limiting the number of people who could get green cards by seeking asylum or based on family ties. But it would keep immigration levels static, neither increasing or decreasing the number of people allowed to legally enter the U.S. each year. Here are the elements of the proposal as described to reporters on Wednesday:

Securing the border: Finishing the border wall
Protecting American wages: Stemming the flow of low-wage labor
Attract and retain the best and brightest immigrants
Prioritize nuclear families: It would limit which family members can come to the country to children and spouses
    Import labor for critical industries
Preserve humanitarian values: Keep asylum system, but limit it.

HOW ANCIENT SUPERNOVAE COULD HAVE ENCOURAGED OUR HUMAN ANCESTORS TO START WALKING UPRIGHT
BY ARISTOS GEORGIOU ON 5/28/19 AT 12:23 PM EDT
ncient supernovae could have had a role to play in encouraging our hominin ancestors to walk upright, a team of researchers has suggested.

According to a paper published in the Journal of Geology, supernovae—cataclysmic explosions of dying stars—showered the Earth with cosmic rays between around 8 million and 2.6 million years ago.

When this space radiation entered the lower atmosphere, it triggered a process known as ionization which may have produced a huge increase in cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. This in turn could have led to an uptick in forest fires around the world.

The authors of the study suggest that these fires could have been one factor in the development of bipedalism—a characteristic that may have allowed our ancestors to better adapt to the savannas that replaced the burnt forests of northeast Africa.
