History of Thai Town

A longtime hope of Thai people living in USA eventually came true when the LA city council voted approval for naming the western area of Los Angeles city as “Thai Town”. The grand opening ceremony of Thai town was held on Saturday of the 29th January 2000.
Jackie Goldberg , a councilwoman, was the one who brought the “Thai Town” agenda to the LA city council after a long term campaign strongly supported by Thai-American groups. These groups of people aimed to see “Thai town” being designated same as the populated areas of Korean people and Chinese people called as “Korea Town” and “China Town” accordingly.

The Los Angeles City Council reached a consensus agreement on the 27th of October 1999 to name the area between Western street and Normandie street as “Thai Town”. This announcement can well be seen as the historical accomplishment for Thai society in the USA, especially for those who live in LA.

Chanchanit (or Chancee) Martorell, Executive Director of Thai Trade Development Center, who is the one who started calling the LA city council to enact and enforce the “Thai Town” designation agenda, joined with Supoj Teerakaosun, Thai Consul General, Jackie Goldberg, Council woman, as the hosts for the grand opening of “Thai Town” on Saturday of the 29th of January 2000 at the front of Thailand’s Plaza located on Hollywood Blvd. Besides the hosts, in this opening ceremony, important Los Angeles political figures such as Scott Wildman, Assemblyman, and Antonio Villaraigosa, LA Mayor also attended the ceremony.

Thai well- known guests, led by Songsil Suksawee, Director of the Thai Trade Center in Los Angeles, Chalermkiet Suwanmart, General Manager of the Thai Airways in USA, Nipan Rojanasopondist, the President of Thai Chamber of Commerce, harmoniously joined this historical moment.

Thai Trade Center announced that “Thai Town” designation reveals the recognition of the LA City Council on the high populated number of Thais living mostly in Hollywood city and some in San Fernando Valley city. Based on the 1990 consensus, at least 80,000 Thai people are living in the Southern of California. In addition, “Thai Town” also shows the equal respect that Thais have received as well as other condensed Asian societies (Chinese, Korean, or Japanese) living in the Southern California and have their recognized towns also.

In addition, Thai town will be in part of the city’s economic development plan aiming to improve the Hollywood area that had been neglected since the last earth quake in Northridge in 1994.

Thai town is expected to be the great tourist spot for both international and American tourists, who come to enjoy Hollywood and stop by for shopping Thai gifts and enjoying Thai foods from Thai restaurants surrounded in Thai town. A sign of “Thai Town” will be hung right before the entering “Thai town” both from the north and the south.
