29 million pound sterling is $ 46 million.
Sotheby’s says the buyer is British diamond dealer Laurence Graff.
The price easily tops that of the blue 35.56-carat Wittelsbach-Graff diamond auctioned for £15.3 million in 2008.
The 24.78 carat gem, classified by the Gemological Institute of America as “fancy intense pink”, was sold last night by Sotheby’s in Geneva.
It has been assessed as type IIa – meaning it is in the top two per cent of the world’s diamonds.
“It is a world record price for a jewel at auction,” said David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s jewellery department in Europe and the Middle East, as he brought down the hammer.
“It’s like pink champagne,” he told Reuters before the sale.
The stone, purchased from American jeweller Harry Winston 60 years ago by the anonymous owner who consigned it for auction in the Swiss city, had a pre-sale estimate of $27-38 million.

Rare pink diamond sells for world record 46 million dollars – The Times of India
GENEVA: A rare pink diamond that is regarded as one of the most desirable and beautiful in the world was sold for a record 46.16 million dollars on Tuesday, smashing previous auction records for the sale of any single diamond or jewel, Sotheby’s said.
Sotheby’s had valued the 24.78 carat Fancy Intense Pink diamond mounted on a ring at 27 million to 38 million dollars (20 million to 28 million euros) ahead of the sale in a luxury lakeside hotel.
But intense bidding wiped out the record of over 24 million dollars set during an auction in December 2008 in the sale of a grey-blue diamond Wittelsbach.
“At 40.50 million francs, the world record price. Selling it. Sold,” said the auctioner, to applause as he brought down the hammer.
The final price of over 46 million dollars includes the hammer price and the commission.
