The venue of the opening ceremony is located at Haixinsha Island. Next to the island is the Guangzhou Tower, currently the second tallest building in the world.

At the beginning of the preformance, the kid sings a very traditional Cantonese folksong on rain and water (in Cantonese language). “Water” is very important in the local culture, which symbolises “wealth” and “happiness” in the local Cantonese content.

This flower is the cotton tree (bombax ceiba), the flower of Guangzhou. In Cantonese the cotton tree is also known as “the heroic tree”.

Guangzhou has been the major seaport of China for more than a thousand years. The Cantonese people has very rich experience of navigating the ocean. Guangzhou was the starting point of the water route of the Ocean Silk Road. People show their tough-minded and bravery against typhoons.

In this part Zhang Ziyi sings a peaceful song “the time”. It is to pay tritube to the achievement of the opening of China in the past 30 years. 30 years ago Guangdong Province was still in extreme poverty. In order to survive the people of Guangzhou started reformation, turning Guangzhou to be the very first point of the opening. Now Guangdong Province is one of the most wealthy place in China, forming one of the largest megalopolis in the world (the Pearl Delta River Megalopolis).

This interval video is to introduce the Asian Games Campaign “Guangzhou the Green City”, which encourage every household in Guangzhou to put a plant on their window during the opneing ceremony, creating a public art event that everyone can participate. This campaign is part of the long term plan to turn Guangzhou into an environmental friendly city.

This drum is 獵德鼓 Liede Drum, a very traditional drum of the region around Guangzhou. Then the 45 ladies symbolise 45 Asiad nations and regions putting the water in their hands together, a symbol of Asian United.
