CNN) — China’s Li Na became the first Asian tennis player to win a grand slam singles title as she defeated defending champion Francesca Schiavone in the final of the French Open on Saturday.
The 29-year-old triumphed 6-4 7-6 (7-0) against the Italian, having been the first player from her country to reach the final of the clay-court tournament.
The victory will push her up to a career-high fourth in the world rankings, equaling the best by an Asian player set by Japan’s Kimiko Date Krumm back in 1995.
“I was nervous but I didn’t want to show my opponent. I think everyone in China will be so excited,” she told reporters. “I got a text message from my friend saying they were crying in China because they saw the national flag coming up.
“Today is a dream come true. When I was a young player I always wanted to be a Grand Slam champion. Here someone said I was getting old — it’s not easy for the old woman’s dream to come true! Not many players can win a grand slam.””

BEIJING – Li Na’s landmark French Open victory sparked celebrations and recognition throughout Asia on Sunday, while China’s state media told its athletes to learn from her as they prepare for the London Olympics.
“The First Asian! Li Na is Crowned the Empress of French Tennis,” declared Taiwan’s China Times newspaper in a headline Sunday.
Li’s victory over defending champion Francesca Schiavone on Saturday came at 11 p.m. in Beijing on a holiday weekend, but Chinese state television rebroadcast the match Sunday and it was on the front pages of most newspapers.

PARIS — Li Na ended China’s long wait for a Grand Slam champion Saturday, defeating Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 7-6 (0) in the French Open final.
The Australian Open runner-up celebrated by falling flat on her back in the red clay after Schiavone hit a backhand long on match point.
“Today is the dream come true,” Li said. “Not so many player can win (a) Grand Slam.”
The crowd at Roland Garros was dotted with red Chinese flags and a small vocal group supporting Schiavone. They watched as Li dropped her serve for the only time late in the second set.
“I was nervous, but I didn’t want to show to my opponent,” said Li, won the final nine points of the match to earn her first major title. “I was a little bit shaking.”
On Sunday, five-time champion Rafael Nadal will face Roger Federer in the men’s final.
The title was only the fifth in Li’s career, and her first on clay. But it is the biggest victory on a tennis court for China, which has already started savoring the moment.
The official Xinhua News Agency sent out a news flash shortly after Li’s victory, saying “In such a great final, Li Na deserved the win.”
Li, however, won’t return home to relish in her achievement until after Wimbledon.
“If I (don’t) do well in Wimbledon, maybe people forget me already,” said Li, with a smile….

BEIJING — Thursday night’s shocker in Olympic tennis — OK, one of them, to go with Roger Federer and Serena Williams losing — provided a nice chance to witness Chinese pride.
Li Na is ranked 29th. She is 26 years old, has been as high as No. 16 and has wins over the likes of former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in a career that has stopped and started twice. Normally, you will find Li playing out on the back courts in the early rounds of Grand Slams, unless, of course, she is playing a marquee player.
Which is what took place at the Olympic Tennis Stadium Thursday night. Li Na was on, in the featured match, against Wimbledon champion Venus Williams.
Any place else and her chances of winning would have been nil. But she was home, and 10,000 people in the stands made sure, at every moment, that she knew that.
When she pulled off the upset, prompting a classic — and likely unintentional put-down quote from Venus Williams — she became the toast of the country.
Williams stepped on her lip when she tried to give Li credit.
“I think she’s definitely had some nice results in her career,” she said, “but nothing like this, against a player like me.”…….
It was great to watch.
For anybody in the good ‘ol USA begrudging the home court advantage in Olympics, huge as it always is, harken back to Los Angeles in 1984, which basically turned into a 16-day photo op of Americans with arms raised in celebration.
It’s China’s turn now.

Maria’s run at Roland Garros is over as she lost in the semis to No.6 seed Na Li of China. Maria lost 5-7 4-6 in 1 hour and 48 minutes.
After the match, Maria said: “She played a very good match. She certainly played a lot better than I did and a lot more solid, and she played the crucial points better. At times I didn’t serve well, and was rushing more than maybe I had to, and considering the conditions maybe I was just trying to go for too big a second serve especially.”
Maria will finish at No.6 in the WTA rankings unless Francesca Schiavone wins the title on Saturday and then Maria finishes No.7.

The most anticipated player in the women’s tournament to clinch the French Open 2011 title has come to an end, as Li Na has THRASHED out the world No.7 Russian player, Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals of the French Open 2011.
The world No.6 chains sensation, Li Na in her semi-finals encounter on Thursday, 2nd May, 2011 has THRASHED out the former world No.1, Maria Sharapova in the straight sets with a score line of 6-4 7-5 to enter to the finals of the French Open 2011.
Na Li opened the match on a bright note and broke Sharapova’s serve in the second game to lead the first set comfortably. However, the Russian broke Li back to get things on level terms at 4-5. A fatal error then cost Sharapova her serve and with it, the opening set 4-6.
The second set saw a major shift in momentum when Sharapova broke Li in the very first game to lead the Chinese star by 3-1 and 4-2. Na Li, however bounced back by that time and once again put her nose in front at 5-4 and 6-5. The Russian’s last service loss of the day ultimately gave Na Li the historic 6-4, 7-5 win in straight sets.
The world No.6, Li Na will be battling against the defending champion, Francesca Schiavone in the finals of the 2011 French Open, this will be the second successive finals for the world No.6 this year. Earlier this year, she was defeated in the Australian Open 2011 finals against Kim Clijsters.

Li Na who, from the superpower China, is unquestionably the best the world has ever seen at this moment is simply too strong and consistent for the former Grand Slam champion Sharapova. In my 30 years of playing and watching tennis, I can confidently say that from now on, Li Na will beat Sharapova in every single match they ever meet until either one retires from competition. That which has been is that which will be. #LOL

LONDON (AFP) – French Open champion Li Na insists she can cope with the extra pressure of being Asia’s first Grand Slam singles winner as the Chinese star aims to continue her year to remember at Wimbledon.
Li made history when she ended the long wait for an Asian champion in one of the four majors by defeating Italy’s Francesca Schiavone in the French Open final earlier this month.
The 29-year-old’s success is predicted to spark an explosion of interest in tennis in Asia after an estimated 116 million people in China tuned in to watch her beat Schiavone.
Li, who faces Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva in the Wimbledon first round, also reached the Australian Open final in January before losing to Kim Clijsters.
For the first time in her career, she finds herself in the spotlight as fans back in China now expect her to deliver success on a regular basis.
But Li has no doubts she will be able to cope with the increased expectations.
“There is a little bit of pressure but I like it. That can improve you a lot,” she said.
“After Paris I stayed in Europe. I know if I go back to China people will be crazy.
“Right now I couldn’t imagine if I go back what would happen. But now it is Wimbledon. If I don’t do well here maybe they forget me already.”……

Sabine Lisicki, a 21-year-old from Germany who had been carried off the court at the French Open after collapsing with cramps and who needed a wild card to get into the Wimbledon main draw, upset third-seeded Li Na, 3-6, 6-4, 8-6.
Li had become the first Chinese woman to win one of the four major tennis tournaments when she took the French Open last month.
Lisicki missed five months of the 2010 season with an ankle injury that she said kept her on crutches for seven weeks, but she has always showed a firm grass-court game. In 2009, she made the Wimbledon quarterfinals and won a Wimbledon warm-up tournament at Birmingham two weeks ago.
“My emotions are over the moon,” she said.
Li twice served for the match but seemed tentative against Lisicki, who had fallen out of the top 200 in the rankings after her ankle injury.
“It was very very hard,” Lisicki said. “I had to start from zero after being on crutches for seven weeks. Getting the wild card here, I appreciate it so much.”
