CHINA plans to send a famed sacred tooth relic of the Buddha to Myanmar for the fourth time, vice president Dr Sai Mauk Kham revealed at a meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on August 9.

A date for the visit has not been set but Union Minister for Religious Affairs Thura U Myint Maung said at the meeting it would go on display at Uppatasanti Pagoda in Nay Pyi Taw, Maha Pasana Cave at Kabar Aye Hill in Yangon Region and Maha Atula Waiyan Monastery in Mandalay Region to allow the public to pay obeisance.

The Chinese embassy in Yangon confirmed the visit would take place but declined to give any more details.

The relic is kept in Lingguang temple in Beijing and was reputedly brought to China by a famous monk from Quetta about 1500 years ago.

The tooth first visited in Myanmar in 1955, when it was displayed at Maha Pasana Cave, in Mayangone township, for eight months. In 1994 it spent 45 days at Maha Pasana Cave and Maha Atula Waiyan Monastery in Mandalay Region, while in 1996-97 the relic was exhibited in Yangon and Mandalay for 90 days.

Ko Naing Win, 31, from Bahan township, said he recalled the tooth’s last visit vividly, as one of his classmates was killed in a bombing at Maha Pasana Cave. “In 1996 we went to Maha Pasana Cave to pray to the Buddha’s sacred tooth relic; there were many people waiting to get into the cave. Unfortunately a bomb went off inside the cave and one of my classmates died,” he said.

Dr Sai Mauk Kham, the patron of the Conveying Committee for Buddha Sacred Tooth Relic, said the committee needed to draw “systematic” plans, particularly concerning security. – Kyaw Hsu Mon
