In Beijings Baiyunguan Temple, well-wishers threw coins at a bell seen as being lucky.

If the coin strikes the bell, the person will have a prosperous year, according to legend.

It is traditional for Chinese families to visit temples early in the morning following a New Year’s Eve of celebrations.

This year’s firework displays in Beijing were notably muted on Sunday following government appeals to reduce the smoky celebrations after air pollution rose over recent weeks.

The holiday will continue through the week, with government and businesses shut down and millions of Chinese travelling to their home towns to visit family.

Chinese communities in Burma and Indonesia celebrated the first day of the Lunar New Year on Sunday.

In Yangon, people visited a temple by the city’s Chinatown district, where they lit incense sticks and chanted prayers, hoping that the Year of the Snake would bring them prosperity and good health.

Meanwhile, at the oldest temple in Jakarta – Vihara Dharma Bhakti, which was built in 1650 – thousands of people performed prayer rituals.

Currently, the Chinese New Year is celebrated openly in Indonesia after a reform in 1998.

During the reign of late dictator Suharto, all forms of Chinese culture were forbidden, including New Year celebrations.

Celine Dion sings in flawless Chinese

Celine Dion performs in Mandarin at the Chinese New Year’s Gala in Beijing as millions across the world welcome in the Year of the Snake.

Canadian singer’s first song was duet with Chinese soprano Song Zuying of traditional folk song Jasmine Flower.

She also performed her global hit My Heart Will Go On, from the Hollywood blockbuster Titanic, which became hugely popular in China.

“It was a wonderful, big honour when I was asked to come here to China and to perform for the New Year’s Eve. I know it’s a very very important celebration,” Dion said.

When asked if it was difficult to sing the music of another language, Dion said music transcends boundaries.

“I had wonderful people in the studio with me helping me understand the meaning of the song. But even in between the lines, between what you’re singing, you have to feel the music. You have to feel the passion,” she said. “It’s every difficult to pinpoint passion. It’s very difficult to pinpoint emotion. This is something that is around us. And I think it lives through music.”

Dion acknowledged the differences between herself and her Chinese counterparts, but added that the passion for performance goes past language and culture.

“We have different Cultures, different ways of singing, and at the end of the song, at the end of the day, we both mean the same. We both want to do our best,” she explained. “We want to both serve the music, and celebrate the New Year, and wish people the very best of health and the very best of luck and wonderful time in the new year to come.”

China Central Television’s Spring Festival Gala is the number one annual program in China and is aired live on the night before the first day of China’s traditional lunar calendar.

It has been held every year since 1983 and is broadcast live to more than one billion people.

The gala usually features singing, dancing, skits, and acrobatic performances, and this year also witnessed performance from stars including singer Leehom Wang, magician Liu Qian, actress Sun Li, and others.

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you, go on

Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you, go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we’re gone

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold you
In my life we’ll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you’re here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

You’re here, there’s nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We’ll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on
