A look at what might happen if Catalonia goes it alone

 October 3 at 2:57 AM
MADRID — The northeastern region of Catalonia, one of Spain’s autonomous regions, is threatening to declare its independence from Spain following a disputed referendum that, it says, gave it a mandate to break away.Spain, which declared the referendum illegal and invalid, says it will do all to maintain the country’s unity and keep hold of the region of 7.5 million people centered around the port city of Barcelona. The two would seem to be about to enter uncharted waters. Here’s a look at how Spain got to this point and what may happen next.

DECLARING INDEPENDENCE

Catalan regional President Carles Puigdemont says he will keep his pledge to declare independence unilaterally following a claimed win for the “Yes” side in Sunday’s disputed referendum.

Did Iraq’s Kurds lose their big bet on independence?
October 02, 2017

Last Wednesday and Thursday marked an historic time for Iraq’s Kurdish population, and indeed for Kurds worldwide, who one day hope that their dream of an independent Kurdish state will be fulfilled. After a months-long preparation by Iraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani to organize an independence referendum for the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdish region, Iraq’s Kurds eagerly ran to the polls and overwhelmingly voted to chart their own way. Over 92% of voters threw their support behind independence, a figure not all that surprising but one that was received with anger by nearly every government in the Middle East.

While millions of Kurds in the region were celebrating their Iraqi brethren’s declaration of independence with dances, parades, and celebratory gunfire—even Iranian Kurds were excited, perhaps wondering when they too could organize a referendum process—Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was deliberating with his national security aides about how to respond.

Senate Intel chair says committee WILL hold press ‘accountable’ but won’t probe news organizations like Trump advised
Senate Intel Chair Richard Burr, R-N.C., said Thursady the panel would hold news organizations ‘accountable’ for misreporting on the Russia probe
However, Burr said the Senate Intelligence Committee would not spend its time ‘investigating’ American news organization, something the president suggested
Early Thursday morning, after several days of harsh headlines, Trump took to Twitter to air out his grievances at the committee and the media
‘Why Isn’t the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country,’ Trump said
The complaint comes on the heels of NBC News reporting that Trump’s secretary of state labeled him a ‘moron’ – and also negative Puerto Rico coverage
The Senate Intelligence Committee announced yesterday that the Russia probe would continue, including looking into collusion with the Trump campiagn

By the time the gunfire and chaos ended, at least 59 were dead and more than 500 injured in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The suspected gunman, identified by police as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a retiree and steady gambler, killed himself as SWAT units descended upon his room at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.

NORTH KOREA SAYS TRUMP IS ‘INSANE’ AND HAS ‘LIT THE WICK OF WAR’
BY JOHN HALTIWANGER ON 10/11/17 AT 2:00 PM

North Korea threatened the U.S. with “a hail of fire” on Wednesday over President Donald Trump’s recent statements toward the reclusive nation at the United Nations, Reuters reports.

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have been engaged in an ongoing war of words in recent weeks, particularly after the president threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea during his first address in front of the U.N. Kim referred to Trump as a “mentally deranged dotard” in the wake of his speech and the two have continued to exchange insults since

9 States Will Require Passports for Domestic Flights Within the U.S.
    •October 16, 2017
Come January 22, 2018, residents of nine states will need a passport to board any flight, domestic or international, according to new TSA guidelines. It’s always refreshing when air travel becomes more complicated. The nine states are Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington. Each of these states does not currently issue a state ID that lives up to federal ID minimum security requirements, according to the REAL ID Act of 2005. That means these states have about three months to make changes to their state IDs or drivers licenses so that they meet federal government standards. Otherwise, you’ll need to apply for or renew a passport—or

Bangladeshi textbook appears to endorse Myanmar propaganda on the Rohingya
Shohel MamunPublished at 11:29 AM October 16, 2017Last updated at 11:47 PM October 16, 2017

The latest exodus of over half a million Rohingya from Myanmar to Bangladesh has refocused the spotlight on the much-persecuted minority.
Naypyidaw describes the mainly-Muslim Rohingya ethnic group as “Bengalis”, to imply that they are illegal immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.
But just as Dhaka is trying to build up global pressure on Myanmar to take back its citizens, a Bangladeshi textbook for eighth graders has stirred controversy by apparently supporting Naypyidaw’s claim.
A chapter in “Sahitya Konika”, a textbook in Bangla by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), appears to claim that Muslims and Hindus living at Maungdaw in Rakhine state are settlers and that their country of origin is Bangladesh.
The write-up printed as a travel story – “Maungdawr Pothey” (On the way to Maungdaw) – is a compilation of “Aparup Arakan” penned by award-winning litterateur Bipradash Barua who visited many places, spoke to locals and tasted their food.
In one passage, he mentions a girl running from a kitchen: “She is a Bangali, wearing a lungi and a blouse. She was speaking in Chittagonian [Chittagong’s dialect]. She is Jhorna hailing from Raojan upazila in Chittagong. The upazila is near my native village. Another girl was also cooking like her.”
In the fifth passage, he says a rickshaw is known as “paikya” in Myanmar.
“Almost the entire trades in Maungdaw are dominated by them [Muslims] and also by Hindus. They [both Muslims and Hindus] came from Chittagong after living there for quite a long while,” he wrote.
However, the exact time period was not mentioned in the story.

Getting Smarter: Google Wants Its Devices To Be Your Backup Brain
    Posted October 5, 2017
Google’s upgrades to its Pixel smartphones and other gadgets are its latest steps toward turning its digital services into your backup brain. The products the company unveiled on Wednesday are packed with artificial intelligence that Google has accumulated from those very same services.
The company’s widely used search engine, Gmail, maps, Chrome web browser and other services have yielded a fountain of data the company has used to smarten up its software and gadgets.

Over the past year, Google has been transplanting that knowledge into its Pixel line of phones, internet-connected speakers and, as of Wednesday, a new type of laptop and a small, hands-free camera that automatically learns when to snap pictures or record video of candid moments.

Abe retains supermajority in Japan’s election, may push to amend constitution

By Adam Taylor October 22 at 9:44 PM
TOKYO — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe secured a crucial victory in Japan’s parliamentary elections on Sunday, with his ruling bloc maintaining a supermajority that could allow it to push for a revision of the nation’s pacifist constitution.

With results still trickling in Monday, public broadcaster NHK reported that Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party and its smaller coalition partner, Komeito, had received at least 213 seats in the 465-seat House of Representatives.

The result further illustrates the political savvy of Abe, 63, who has proved an enduring force in Japanese politics despite scandals and fluctuating approval ratings.

Bush laments ‘nationalism distorted into nativism’
    PUBLISHED: October 19, 2017
NEW YORK — Former President George W. Bush on Thursday denounced bigotry in Trump-era American politics, warning that the rise of “nativism,” isolationism and conspiracy theories have clouded the nation’s true identity.

The comments, delivered at a New York City conference hosted by the George W. Bush Institute, amounted to an indirect critique from a former Republican president who has remained largely silent during President Donald Trump’s unlikely rise to power. The 43rd president did not name Trump on Thursday, but he attacked some of the principles that define the 45th president’s political brand.

“We’ve seen nationalism distorted into nativism, forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America,” Bush said. “We see a fading confidence in the value of free markets and international trade, forgetting that conflict, instability and poverty follow in the wake of protectionism. We’ve seen the return of isolation sentiments, forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places.”

According to a study by the Pew Research Center, the Asian population in the U.S. grew a whopping 72 percent between 2000 and 2015 — from 11.9 million to 20.4 million — making Asians the fastest growing racial or ethnic group in the nation.
Hispanics, the second fastest growing group, increased 60 percent.

Reflecting the fast growth rate, the study projected Asians to become the largest immigrant group in the U.S. by 2055, surpassing Hispanics.  Asians are predicted to comprise 38 percent of U.S. immigrants in the next 50 years, while Hispanics are expected to comprise 31 percent.
