For thoughtful comments and even very professional ‘Crime Scene Investigation’ type analysis please point your browser to:

    http://coronado.patch.com/articles/shacknai-calls-for-new-look-at-coronado-mansion-deaths

    Example
    joe2:
“It was the also the initial belief of Detective Brian Patterson of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detail, that Rebecca Zahau had been murdered.

Quoting from Detective Patterson’s sworn affidavit to obtain a search warrant, number 41227, of the Shacknai residence, located at 1043 Ocean Boulevard in Coronado, CA, “Based on my training and experience and my initial investigation, I believe that based on the fact that the Asian female (Ms. Zahau), had her hands and legs bound and was found in the condition that she was found by Adam Shacknai, that she was a victim of a homicide.”

While that initial view of homicide was eventually rejected by the San Deigo County Medical Examiner, the Zahau family has never accepted that finding.”

Can we find out if Detective Patterson, bless his heart, has taken an early retirement?

    Roger Mack:
I read one of the search warrants, not sure which at the moment. Detective writing it was talking about his 15 years of detective work and could tell this was a homicide. Amazing how lack of DNA and Fingerprints can force even a trained educated person to abandon everything they know. Somehow in between this Detective writing this and how the investigation was conducted it was decided to take the easy way out and let a killer make a fool of Law Enforcement. Jonah Shacknai always said “I can choke and kill you and get away with it” and looks like he found the right people to help him carry out his dream.
You don’t have to have Law Enforcement training to see that what happened here was wrong. You don’t need a DNA sample to tell you that Jonah Shacknai is trying to use the system to get away with Murder. No fingerprints will ever tell you that Jonah Shacknai’s total disregard for Rebecca Zahau is overly obvious.
Help stop this from happening, stand up and spread the word that money can not buy everything. Dust off your contact list, shake up your Facebook friends, heck even change your Myspace wallpaper if you still have one of those. Tell everyone what is going on here and ask everyone to join in our fight.

Just heard Gore on KUSI.. That channel is so leading. Gore states that all these people are picking on Shacknai and it is upsetting his family. Boo HOO.. What about the woman you murdered Jonah, don’t you think her family deserves peace? Don’t you think Rebecca deserves to have you sit in jail for the rest of your life? Keep up the fight and keep that petition going . We have just a few more hours to go before 12.. Lets try to get 100 before the end of the day!! We are close!!

Shacknai Calls for New Look at Deaths

    http://coronado.patch.com/articles/shacknai-calls-for-new-look-at-coronado-mansion-deaths

Asks for state to “evaluate” local authorities’ conclusions about how girlfriend Zahau, 32, and son Max, 6, died in July; three search warrants also released.

Jonah Shacknai, the Arizona pharmaceuticals mogul who owns the Spreckels mansion, is calling for state Attorney General Kamala Harris to “evaluate” the conclusions drawn by local authorities in the July deaths of his girlfriend and son.

The cases have spawned “unrelenting and often vicious speculation and innuendo,” he wrote in a Monday letter to Harris (see media box), leading him to seek another look, though he noted that he trusts the findings of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and Coronado police.

Harris’ office confirmed receipt of the letter, but would offer no further comment Tuesday……

Inside the above article on “sisters quest for justice..” is a comment. This comment refers to another article in another San Diego newspaper called the “Reader.”

The following is the mentioned link to the “Reader.”

This article is also worth reading. It has some more details on the Zahau family from Falam in the Chin Hills.

“The True Heart of Rebecca Zahau”

    http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2011/sep/14/citylights2-rebecca-zahau/

    Extracts:

…The sisters were born in the town of Falam, in the Chin Hills of northwest Myanmar (formerly Burma), near the border with India. The Chin people live in a hard area, less fertile than anywhere else in Myanmar….

    ———————-

Apart from this fine article, the original supplier of the link wished to draw attention to a very good comment that he found below the article.

In that comment, Fred Williams, a former member of the San Diego Crime Commission challenged the “suicide” findings.

    Extracts:

…..There is no other reasonable conclusion but that this is a cover up. Whether due to the influence of those involved, or just a desire to avoid association an unseemly case while running for higher office…it’s still a cover up.

This case cries out for independent investigation. DA Bonnie Dumanis should be asked about this case at every campaign appearance as she runs for mayor.

Also, the Attorney General of California, or perhaps the FBI should be asked to re-investigate not only the alleged suicide, but also the reason for such a blinkered and flawed “investigation”…..

    Hot off the wire!

“According to KFMB, Bremner said her private investigation has uncovered new witnesses who may have information about the night Zahau died, including one who claimed to have heard a woman cry for help from the mansion around 11:30 pm on July 12 and another who saw an unidentified woman outside the house about an hour before that. The sheriff’s office has not confirmed these accounts.”

Went into the above link, found a link to another news article, popping up at the sidelines. See below:

Rebecca Zahau’s phone to be re-examined

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/sep/21/rebecca-zahaus-phone-to-be-re-examined/

The Sheriff’s Department will re-examine the cell phone of Rebecca Zahau with technological programs that it previously did not have available, homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit said Wednesday.

Zahau’s phone had been searched manually, Nesbit said. It will now be examined with a new Windows-based operating system, he said. Nesbit said the case was not being reopened, but if “something relevant” was found, that could be a possibility.

The Sheriff’s Department determined that Zahau, 32, committed suicide by hanging herself in July at a Coronado home owned by her boyfriend, Jonah Shacknai.

Shacknai’s 6-year-old son Max was gravely injured July 11 in an accidental fall at the home while under Zahau’s care. Max died July 16 at Rady Children’s Hospital.

Shacknai’s girlfriend called full of life as answers lag

Her name in her native Burmese was Springtime Beauty. Photographs reflect a smiling, vibrant woman ready to embrace any outdoor challenge: standing on a mountain peak, kneeling over a tide pool, clambering across a wooden bridge. It gives the sense that Rebecca Zahau couldn’t wait to leap into the next adventure.
The pictures, which unfold in a memorial slide show, are in stark contrast to the brutal circumstances of the Paradise Valley woman’s death – a death that, nearly a month later, continues to stymie detectives.

Update, 8:25 a.m. Thursday: Attorney Anne Bremner offered an additional response regarding investigators retaining a Zahau phone the family has requested. Via email, she said phone records the family has obtained call into question the timeline detectives established based on a call the records do not reflect.

Investigators found that Zahau killed herself because she was distraught over a voice mail about the dire condition of her boyfriend’s son, who had been hospitalized for nearly two days.

“But there is no evidence that such a call came in nor that such a message was received,” Bremner said. “We hope and trust that they are utilizing a forensic expert. We have requested the return of the phone so that we can conduct our own forensic examination.

    http://www.760kfmb.com/story/15520745/sheriff-launches-forensic-exam-of-zahaus-cell-phone-new-witnesses-accounts-reported

SAN DIEGO (CBS8) – The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has opened a new examination of data contained in the cell phone of Rebecca Zahau, the woman found hanging at the Spreckels mansion July 13.
Sheriff’s homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit said that within the past week technology experts from his department started using newly-identified software to download data from Zahau’s phone for forensic review.
“It constitutes a new examination of the evidence,” Lt. Nesbit told News 8.
Sheriff investigators want to copy and save all the data contained in the smart phone used by Zahau, 32, in the days and weeks before she was found hanging from a balcony at the Coronado mansion.
“If it leads us to new information that’s relevant to the case, then yes, you could consider that a re-opening of the case,” Nesbit said.
News 8 has learned Sheriff’s detectives never attempted to recover a deleted voicemail message, which Nesbit confirmed was left for Zahau by her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai, 54, hours before she died.

Sheriff launches forensic exam of Zahau’s cell phone; new witness accounts reported

In yet another development, Bremner said she sent the following email message Wednesday evening to California Attorney General Kamala Harris:

Please be advised that I represent the family of Rebecca Zahau. I understand that you have received a letter from Jonah Shacknai requesting a review of the SDSD’s investigation of Rebecca’s death (and their conclusion that she committed suicide).

I will be respectfully submitting to you a formal and detailed response to Mr. Shacknai’s letter (which was not copied to me nor to my clients). In the interim, I want to be on record that we are not requesting a review. Rather, we are requesting a full independent INVESTIGATION into the circumstances surrounding Rebecca’s tragic death – with full input from us, our investigators and our experts.

We have significant and compelling information, analysis and crucial and pivotal facts to share. We have also retained nearly ten unimpeachable experts who with ample bases challenge the finding of suicide. We also have new compelling evidence to be investigated and new critical witnesses to be interviewed.

    Thank you.

    ====================================
The letter, obtained by KFMB News 8, appears in its entirety below:

    From: “Webb, Dan K.”
    Date: September 6, 2011 6:43:13 AM PDT
    To: “abremner@XXXXXXXXXXXX.com
    Subject: Jonah Shacknai

    Dear Ms. Bremner,

I am an attorney for Jonah Shacknai, retained by him to address false public statements you have made, which have the effect of severely damaging Mr. Shacknai’s personal and business reputations. Over the past several days, you have made a series of inaccurate and utterly unsupported statements about the facts surrounding the tragic deaths of Max Shacknai and Rebecca Zahau. However, what is most concerning are recent false public statements you have made that Mr. Shacknai, because of his business success, has somehow improperly influenced the investigations and conclusions of four different, and, independent California law enforcement agencies. You have further made public comments that these agencies have applied a different standard in conducting their investigations because of Mr. Shacknai’s wealth. You have absolutely no facts to support these false and irresponsible statements, and you are fully aware that such facts do not exist. Please know that your false public statements constitute defamation, per se, and under law, entitle Mr. Shacknai to recover from you, and your law firm, substantial damages.

Moreover, your statements and actions are highly insensitive on a human level. Mr. Shacknai and his family have suffered two tragic losses under the harsh and unkind glare of a national media frenzy you have now helped sustain. It is ironic that Mr. Shacknai went through the entire law enforcement investigation, at all times cooperating completely with several police authorities, and never once considered retaining an attorney. It is only now, after authorities have announced the conclusions of their comprehensive investigations, that Mr. Shacknai finds it necessary to consult with me because of the false and irresponsible public statements you are making, harming his personal and business reputations. Importantly, throughout the investigation, Mr. Shacknai was not advancing any particular outcome regarding Rebecca Zahau’s cause of death, because he had absolutely no knowledge of what happened the night she died.

It is not, in any way, the intent of this communication to advocate that your clients accept the results of the investigation. They are, of course, entitled to their point of view regarding this matter. Nevertheless, you must cease and desist from making any further false public statements about Mr. Shacknai. I appreciate your immediate attention to the seriousness of this matter.

A News 8 review of the autopsy revealed Zahau had four head injuries underneath her scalp, sticky tape residue on her legs, and a T-shirt in her mouth at the time of her death.

Deputy Medical Examiner Jonathan Lucas released a written statement to News 8 responding to the new evidence revealed in the autopsy, evidence which was never publicly addressed in a 90-minute news conference held Friday by the San Diego County Sheriff, Coronado police, and the medical examiner.

The entire statement by San Diego County Deputy Medical Examiner Jonathan Lucas reads:

Sticky material that appeared similar to tape residue was noted on her mid left shin and right lower leg. These were small areas (about an inch), and their significance is not clear. Their position and size would have been unusual for evidence of leg binding.

Bruises on the right side of her scalp were also seen. These were relatively minor. Because there was evidence that she went over the balcony in a non-vertical position, she may have struck her head on the balcony on the way down.

The T-shirt that was around her neck had a portion originally in her mouth that was removed by the person who found her. It is not clear why it was there, although people can place material in their mouth prior to hanging.

Blood was found on her inner thighs and the source was either menses or spotting due to an IUD (Intrauterine Device). There was no genital trauma. A small amount of blood was also noted on her big toes which appeared to be due to small scratches from the plants below the balcony.

As in any comprehensive investigation, some findings cannot be entirely explained. None of the observations listed above are inconsistent with the conclusions reached regarding the cause and manner of death of Rebecca Zahau. Our condolences go out to all of those involved in this tragic case.

Dr. Lucas did not respond to a News 8 follow-up question via email asking whether four head injuries would be consistent with Zahau’s hanging-death scenario.

“”If the test is inconclusive, as it was in this case, you state that you have no opinion, period, end of discussion. This means you run another test, with new questions. The Newseek article was written by Joan Kron.

Some commentators alleged that Joan did promotion work for Shaknai beauty products in the past.
They felt that she would favor Shaknai or reflect his point of view.

In spite of the article, most comments carried views opposing Joan’s. They were not swayed by her.

Rebecca Zahau Death Mystery: New Witness Went To Cops To Report ‘Scream For Help’, Was ‘Blown Off’

The new witness in the Coronado mansion deaths — who is claiming they heard a “scream for help” hours before cops said Rebecca Zahau died — attempted to report the information to police twice but was “blown off,” RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.

As we previously revealed, the informant, whose identity has not been released, contacted Zahau’s anguished family on Wednesday and provided them with sensational information that could blow the suicide theory to pieces.

According to the witness, they heard screams from inside the Coronado, Calif., mansion at 11 p.m.

    PHOTOS: Celebs Involved In Murder

“The witness went to law enforcement not once, but twice, but was blown off,” a source close to the Zahau family told RadarOnline.com. “This witness is credible and their information has been verified, so one is left to wonder why police did not listen to this individual. The witness’ information contradicts the theory released by the sheriff’s department and questions the timeline, as police claimed. We are left asking, why was this person not taken seriously?”

It’s not known if the witness approached the San Diego County Sheriff or Coronado Police; both departments worked on the investigation.

PHOTOS: Celebrities Who Died In Bizarre Circumstances

Cops concluded Zahau, 32, killed herself at 3 a.m. after receiving a voicemail from her pharmaceutical tycoon boyfriend, Jonah Shacknai, 54, informing her his son Max, 6, was going to die.

Max suffered grave injuries from a fall while under Rebecca’s care.

SAN DIEGO — An independent autopsy on the body of a woman who died suspiciously in July at a Coronado mansion was performed Friday at the request of the family, 10News learned.

Rebecca Zahau’s remains were examined by world-renowned pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht in Pittsburgh. Wecht, 80, has performed autopsies on Anna Nicole Smith and her son Daniel and was involved in the O.J. Simpson trial, the JonBenet Ramsey case, and the investigation into the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Wecht also investigated the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, who died when her car — driven by the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, plunged into a lake on Chappaquiddick Island, Mass., in 1969.

Wecht added that the answers the Zahau family is seeking are the same ones most of America wants.
“I would be wiling to bet that 80 to 90 percent of the American public is not accepting the determination of this having been a suicide,” Wecht said.
Wecht told 10News reporter Allison Ash over the phone on Thursday that he would not approach the autopsy with any fixed agenda in mind.
“As far as I’m concerned, this is an objective, professional undertaking,” Wecht said Thursday. “I’m going to do a thorough examination as I would do in any case.”
When asked what Wecht would focus on, he said, “Obviously, much attention will be focused on the neck, the site that one examines when there has been a hanging.”
Wecht also said he would be examining the hemorrhages beneath the scalp that were reported.
“I don’t skip over anything,” he told 10News. “Everything will be studied as meticulously and thoroughly as I can.”
Wecht, who has not criticized the first autopsy nor disputed that hanging was the cause of death, believes investigators too hastily concluded that Zahau killed herself.

CORONADO, Calif. (CBS 8) — For the first time since Rebecca Zahau was found dead at the Spreckels mansion in Coronado July 13, we are seeing a reenactment of the entire hanging scenario.

The circumstances of Zahau’s death remain shrouded in mystery, in part, because detectives never recreated the alleged hanging as part of their investigation.

The San Diego Medical Examiner and Sheriff’s Department have ruled Zahau’s death a suicide by hanging; but Zahau’s family believes she was murdered.

CORONADO MANSION DEATH TIMELINE: CLICK HERE to view related stories and events.

“It would have taken a contortionist – frankly, a Cirque De Soleil performing artist – to accomplish such a ‘suicide’ feat,'” according to the Zahau family attorney, Anne Bremner.

With the help of a criminal justice student from Miramar Community College, News 8 put the Sheriff’s suicide theory to the test.

Patricia Lanham, 26, agreed to reenact the Zahau hanging scenario. She is about the same height and 15 pounds heavier than Zahau.

We started with that cryptic message painted on the bedroom door, “She saved him can you save her.”

Investigators believe Zahau was naked when she painted that message because they found black paint on her breasts. In fact, Zahau would have been naked during this entire suicide scenario.

“She did have to put some planning into it,” Miramar student Lanham said during the reenactment.

News 8 used the same type of rope described in Zahau’s autopsy report. The sequence of the binding and hanging was described by investigators during a news conference Sept. 2.

Zahau would have cut the rope into three pieces using a knife and tied one section of rope to the foot of a bed inside a second-story bedroom at the mansion.

Zahau may have draped the rope over the balcony to eyeball its length. She would need about 30 feet of rope for the section used in the alleged hanging.

Another section of rope, she used to tie her ankles; wrapping it several times in a figure-eight pattern, according to investigators.

Next, the noose: a simple slip knot using 11 inches of rope; it goes around her neck over the top of her hair.

Then, the autopsy said Zahau used a long-sleeve shirt to gag herself. The sleeves would have been looped around her neck, tied in a knot and the shirt itself placed inside her mouth.

“It seems like it could be impossible and it seems really odd and bizarre, like why would she do that?” asked Lanham, the Miramar student. “Why would she go through these steps? And, it seems highly unusual.”

Investigators believe Zahau bound her wrists with the third section of rope using the same figure-eight pattern; first, in front of her body, and then she would have slipped one hand out and reinserted it into the ropes behind her back.

It’s a complex suicide scenario that our criminal justice student was able to accomplish in less than a half hour.

“With all the steps taken to actually get it done, there’s actually a whole lot of time to change your mind and think, ‘No I really don’t want to do this,'” said Lanham.

While bound and gagged, Zahau probably would have hopped across the bedroom to face the balcony railing. The balcony itself was about two feet wide.

Detectives found footprints and toe prints on the balcony floor.

Using a bed frame railing approximately the same height as the balcony railing – about 38 inches – Lanham was able to reenact the leaning action by kicking her feet up and over.

“Did she have any bruises on her hips or anything?” asked Lanham during the railing reenactment.

In fact, the autopsy report shows Zahau did have three small abrasions across her abdomen.

To complete the hanging, Detectives said Zahau leaned forward and fell over the balcony head first. It was a nine foot drop before the roped snapped tight, according to the autopsy report.

“I think that all we showed is that it was possible for her to do this herself,” Lanham said. “It doesn’t prove that she did it herself.”

The sheriff’s department declined to participate in the reenactment.

In part two of this investigation, News 8 tied a 100-pound weight to a bed and dropped the weight off a balcony. Viewers can see the dramatic results of that test Wednesday on News 8 at 5 p.m.

Exclusive: Max Shacknai’s aunt talks about Coronado mansion deaths

    http://www.cbs8.com/story/15982091/exclusive-max-shacknais-aunt-talks-about-coronado-mansion-deaths

CORONADO, Calif. (CBS 8) – Nina Romano was confused about what happened to her nephew at the Spreckels mansion from the moment Rebecca Zahau picked her up at Lindbergh Field.

Max Shacknai, 6, suffered grave injuries in a fall down the mansion’s main staircase on the morning of July 11, according to the boy’s autopsy report.

Zahau, 32, was babysitting Max at the time of his fall and Romano flew down from her home near Sacramento that same night.

“We got in the car and the first thing I said was, ‘Rebecca what happened?'” recalled Romano.

“I heard Maxie was walking up the stairs and he had a cardiac arrest. That makes no sense to me. I said, ‘He’s a six year old boy. He’s a healthy boy. He plays soccer. He plays sports. I don’t understand.’ And (Rebecca) just looked at me and she said, ‘I know.’ And that was it,” said Romano, 41, during a two-hour interview detailing the events.

“And I said, ‘Okay, well, where did he fall from? Did he fall from the first set of stairs, the little landing, the stairs going up, the top landing by the bedrooms, where did he fall from?'” Romano continued. “She said twice, ‘He fell from the bedroom. He fell from the bedroom.’ And I looked at her and said, ‘How do you know that? I thought you didn’t see him.’ No answer.”

Romano’s non-identical, twin sister is Dina Shacknai, the boy’s mother and ex-wife of the mansion’s then owner, Arizona pharmaceutical tycoon Jonah Shacknai, 54.

“She would not talk about the accident again, not one word,” Romano said. “And I thought this is really weird because if I was her and I was picking up a family member of a boy that I was watching, I would give full disclosure of everything I knew, everything I saw, everything I did.”

Romano said she visited her nephew at the hospital the following evening, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12.

“He had tubes coming out of everywhere. He had a neck brace on. He was on a ventilator. It was just shocking for me to see him like that,” Romano recalled.

Romano said she returned to her sister Dina’s house on G Avenue in Coronado – less than a half mile from the Spreckels mansion – around 9:30 p.m. and she still didn’t have the answers she was looking for. She decided to send Rebecca a text message.

“I was at my sister’s house and I texted from my sister’s kitchen. It was 9:41 p.m. and I have my phone records. I waited until 9:55 p.m. and I got no answer,” Romano said.

Romano gave News 8 a copy of her Verizon cell phone bill showing an outgoing message to Zahau’s cell phone at 9:41 p.m. For some unexplained reason, Zahau’s phone records showed a time stamp indicating the text was received by Zahau at 10:41 p.m., exactly one hour later.

Both cell phones were in California at the time and in July, Arizona time is the same as California time. Zahau and her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai lived in Arizona and vacationed during the summer at the oceanfront home in Coronado.

Romano said she never received a response to that 9:41 p.m. text message, so she decided to walk to the mansion to see if she could talk to Zahau about Max’s fall.

“I kept saying to myself, ‘I don’t get it.’ I thought I’m just going to go ask Rebecca, can you please show me where you found him? Show me how you found him. I just wanted to see. Show me where he was positioned. I just wanted to see for myself,” Romano said. “That’s why I went there. I just wanted her to show me how she found him because I didn’t understand.”

She said it was about a five minute walk.

“I went up to the front door and rang the bell, nothing; rang the bell a second time, nothing. I knocked on the door. I looked through the glass, nothing,” Romano remembered. “It didn’t look like anybody was home. The whole bottom part of the house was dark.”

Romano then walked around the driveway side of the house and noticed Zahau’s vehicle in the driveway.

“There’s a gate that goes to the backyard. I didn’t touch the gate. I didn’t try to open the gate in any way. I just kind of tried to look through,” Romano said.

Romano noticed a light on in an upstairs bedroom; the same room where detectives believe Zahau bound and gagged herself while naked, tied a rope around her own neck and jumped to her death off the balcony.

“That overhead light was on. So that was the only light that I saw in the house. The kitchen was dark, everything was dark. So I thought, that’s kind of strange because her car’s here; that light’s on, that’s weird. So then I just thought, ‘Maybe she just doesn’t want to talk to me,'” according to Romano. “So, I turned around and I left right away and I walked back to my sister’s house, got ready for bed and went to sleep.”

Romano said she was wearing black yoga pants, a gray tank top and a gray yoga jacket.

“I was carrying a pink, Coach wristlet. It’s very small. It’s enough to put a cell phone, a pack of gum, a lip gloss, your ID; that’s what it’s for, which the police took photos of, so they have photos of it,” said Romano.

A passerby did notice a woman at the house that night and reported it to police following Zahau’s death July 13. But that witness’s description of the woman does not match that of Nina Romano, according to Zahau family attorney Anne Bremner.

In a series of emails and interviews with News 8, Bremner said the witness now believes the woman he saw was Nina’s sister, Dina Shacknai.

“The witness sent me a picture of Dina and said it was Dina,” according to Bremner, who said the witness was riding a bicycle by the home at approximately 10:20 p.m. on July 12.

“He was going by and saw somebody with a large, black bag trying to get in the front door and looking around and going to the back of the house,” Bremner said. “She was 40 to 50 years, 5’5″, 170 to 190 lbs., long dark hair; wearing a black and white striped short sleeve shirt,” said Bremner.

“He is positive it (was) Dina and she was acting very suspiciously,” Bremner wrote. “He has seen subsequent news reports that said Nina was out front and he said that’s not the person he saw.”

The witness may have mistaken Romano for her twin sister, who was at Children’s Hospital by her son’s bedside throughout the evening of July 12 and into the morning of July 13, Romano said.

“Seeing as we’re twins, I could totally understand how somebody could mistake me at 10 o’clock at night in the dark for my sister,” said Romano. “And that makes sense. We have the same body type. She’s thinner than I am but we have the same broad shoulders. We’re fraternal twins so I get how he could make that mistake. But it was 100% a mistake.”

Bremner said detectives investigated the witness report and concluded the woman was Romano but she still has questions.

“This is a witness who gave a description to the police that doesn’t match, as I understand it, the way Nina (Romano) appeared at that time,” the Seattle-based attorney said in a phone interview. “We’re looking for accuracy in this investigation and making sure we get to the answers.”

Romano responded that she voluntarily told detectives, who were at the hospital, about the incident.

“I told the police the very next day, I was there for three minutes; here’s what I did,” recalled Romano.

“I had nothing to hide. I wanted them to know because I believe if you’re not forthcoming and it comes out afterwards, that looks suspicious. That’s why I immediately said, ‘Hey, I was there.'”

Romano told News 8, “They took photographs, the typical front, side, back type of photographs; hands, front, back, everything. They did a DNA swab in my mouth. They ripped hair out of my head in about five or six different areas. They literally twisted and ripped it out of my head. They took fingernails, like where they scrape under your fingernails. And, then I also gave them the clothes that I was wearing that night.”

The mansion owner’s brother, Adam Shacknai, 48, called 911 at 6:45 a.m. on July 13 to report he had found Zahau hanging and cut her down.

That’s when, Romano said, her confusion over her nephew’s tragic death turned to suspicion.

“I think she committed suicide for sure,” said Romano. “I think she was guilty. I think she felt guilty. In my opinion, I feel like she knew more than she disclosed.”

“My thought was, ‘Oh my God she did know more than she admitted to.’ That was my initial reaction. ‘Oh my gosh, what on earth did she do that she couldn’t live with?'”

The autopsy report concluded Max died as a result of an accidental fall. It said the boy’s last word was “Ocean,” the name of Rebecca’s dog. Investigators speculated that Max may have been riding his scooter in the hallway and tripped over the dog, resulting in the boy’s plunge down the staircase.

It’s a conclusion Romano does not believe and she wants the investigation reopened.

“I don’t believe that he flew over the banister in the way that the medical examiner says he did,” said Romano.

“Maybe (Rebecca) wasn’t watching him the way she was supposed to. Maybe she wasn’t taking care of him. Maybe she wasn’t paying attention.”

Romano also said she believes Zahau lied about Max uttering the name of the dog before he lost consciousness.

“I believe that’s what Rebecca said because that sounds pretty good doesn’t it? ‘It’s not my fault; it’s the dog’s (fault). I didn’t do anything. It must have been the dog.’ I don’t believe that statement to be true. That’s my quote. I don’t believe that statement that Rebecca said is true. I believe that’s a complete lie,” said Romano.

As for conspiracy theories that Zahau may have been murdered – a revenge attack for the boy’s death – Romano called that thinking, “bizarre.”

“When people say, ‘Oh Dina must have been so mad. Grieving mother; she went over there and she just took Rebecca out.’ That’s crazy,” said Romano. “My sister wishes Rebecca was here so she could say, ‘What happened in that house? Tell me.'”

The Zahau family does not believe Rebecca committed suicide and also wants the law enforcement investigation reopened into her death. The results of a second autopsy on Zahau’s body are set to be announced Thursday on the Dr. Phil Show, which airs on CBS 8.

Both families now find themselves in a parallel kind of uneasiness; not believing the official autopsy results in the deaths of their loved ones, as they search for answers that may not come.

“My thoughts, my positive energy goes out to the Zahau family,” Romano said. “I feel awful for them. My sister feels awful for them. She (Dina) knows what she is going through. She would never ever want another mother to feel what she’s feeling because my sister, she will never be the same.”

“Maxie was a beautiful, beautiful, loving little boy.” Romano recalled as the interview finished up. “And all of a sudden you see these people blogging and we’re all conspiring, I mean it’s just bizarre. I just don’t understand how people think. So I think that’s why I finally just wanted to talk to you because I feel like nobody’s talking about my nephew and I don’t want people to forget about him.”

A Hitchcock Thriller in the Making: Rebecca Zahau File

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/9136639/a_hitchcock_thriller_in_the_making.html?cat=9

Everyone loves a good mystery and the Rebecca Zahau case has more twists and turns than anything Alfred Hitchcock could have dreamed up. I will preface this by stating that there is no mystery according to the San Diego Police Department.

They investigated and found that Rebecca Zahau, 32, committed suicide, a result of being distraught over the grave injuries her boyfriend’s 6-year old son sustained after a fall two days prior. Case closed. Her family has fought hard to have the case reopened with the help of their lawyer Anne Bremner, as they believe Rebecca was murdered. But by whom?

The mystery starts July 11th when 6-year old Max Shacknai was found unconscious at the bottom of a carpeted staircase in the famed Speckels mansion in Coronado, once owned by the owner of the Hotel Del Coronado.

Max was the son of Jonah Shacknai, the wealthy founder and CEO of Medicis pharmaceutical company. Rebecca, Jonah’s longtime girlfriend and a teenage relative were the only ones home at the time of Max’s accident. Sometime after Max was taken to the hospital a physician voiced suspicions that the boy’s grave injuries were not consistent with the fall, but perhaps the result of something that happened prior to the fall.

I do not know if the family was aware of the doctor’s suspicions, but Jonah did not stay at the mansion any of the nights following the accident, choosing to stay at a hotel or the Ronald McDonald house, despite the mansion being only a 15-minute drive from the hospital. Rebecca did not join Jonah, but stayed at the mansion in Coronado alone.

Max’s mother and Jonah’s ex-wife, Dina Shacknai, who lived only a few blocks away in Coronado felt comfortable enough to go home for 12 hours the day following Max’s accident, despite his dire condition. …………

………. Two deaths ruled and accident and suicide, a famous mansion, wealth, ex-wife, twin sister, a brother, millionaire CEO boyfriend, motives, public speculation; all the makings for a convoluted tale of suspense and intrigue. Enough to give Hitchcock vertigo.

The mansion was sold within months to a group of investors. It’s now for sale again, if you have an extra $14 million. Stories and all.
