Cruise Industry Seeks Fortune in China

Builders, Operators Teaming to Fill Voids In Rapidly Growing Chinese Market

After an uneven couple of years punctuated by struggling economic factors worldwide, maturing markets and some highly publicized accidents and illnesses, the cruise industry is hoping to find a little “double happiness” from the rapidly growing Chinese market – enhanced profits and renewed market growth for both operators and builders.

For its part, the Chinese government is betting on a triple payout: it hopes to serve a growing middle class (estimated at a potential 300 million market) and its desire for cruising vacations, to float its own liners and domestic operators and, to expand opportunities for its financially struggling shipyard industry.
To do this will require, most importantly, ships, the newer the better, and lots of them. The market is currently served by 52 cruise liners of varying capacities and older vintages, with the potential to carry 2.17 million passengers across 1,000 cruises, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)….


 

 

China Shipyards Gain Huge VLOCC Orders

Singapore’s Berge Bulk to sign a LOI for the constructions with CSSC Guangzhou Longxue Shipbuilding & CSIC Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry.

Singapore’s Berge Bulk is planning to place an order for up to eight very large ore carriers (VLOC) at China’s two state-owned shipyards.

The eight newbuildings are scheduled for delivery in 2014 and 2015 and are expected to cost around $57-58m per ship….


 

China Shipyards Benefit from Lomar Fleet Expansion

Lomar informs it has declared a further three options to build new container vessels at Chinese shipyards, which brings the total number of newbuilding orders in hand to over 20 ships.

The company has declared its final two options in a total order for six 1,100 TEU container vessels from the Yangzijiang shipyard. They are designed by leading Chinese design institute SDARI (Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute) and have much improved fuel consumption and the ability to carry up to 220 reefer containers. The vessels will be named Toronto Trader, to be delivered in late 2015 and Tampa Trader, to be delivered in early 2016.

Lomar has also declared a further purchase option within its order for 2190 TEU container ships from China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard, bringing its total firm orders to five. This vessel is due for delivery in 2015 and is similarly a modern, fuel-efficient design from SDARI.

Other newbuildings within the Lomar fleet include eight firm orders and two purchase options for 64,000 dwt ‘Ultramax’ bulk carriers from the COSCO Group in China…


 

China Shipyards Haul in Latest Ocean-going Newbuildings

Increased activity in the dry bulk carrier shipbuilding market is reported in the latest Clarkson Hellas Weekly S+P Bulletin, and in all sectors the shipbuilders are in China.

Dry bulkers
Grieg Shipping have added to their existing orders at Dayang, with two further units of Ultramaxes, due for delivery within September and December 2015, this takes their order at that yard to four ships.

Wah Kwong Shipping have now also placed order at Chengxi Shipyard for four 64,000dwt Ultramaxes scheduled for delivery within 2016.

Ariston Navigation have also increased their order at Jinling Shipyard, with declaration of a further 35,000dwt Handysize bulker for delivery within Jan 15.

Fujian Shipping Company have placed orders for 2 x 105,000dwt Bulkers for delivery within June 15 and Mar 16 for 2 x 105,000dwt Bulkers at CIC Jiangsu Shipyard.

Tankships
Clarkson Hellas report that Sungdong Shipyard have taken orders for 4 + 2 units of MR’s for Breakwater Capital, deliveries are understood by Clarkson Hellas to run from 2H 2015 and into 2016.

Container ships
Zhongzhou Shipping Co. Ltd have placed orders for 6 x 1,600 teu container ships scheduled for delivery within 2015 and into 2016.

China’s manned submersible Jiaolong finished a dive in “Challenger Deep” in the Mariana Trench, the world’s deepest known trench, on Tuesday.

The dive began at 7:09 a.m. local time. Nearly three hours later, the submersible reached the planned depth of 4,811 meters, where scientists worked for more than three hours.
They conducted observation, sampling and surveying, and collected seawater, rocks and samples of marine life, including a sea cucumber, a sponge and two starfish. The submersible also photographed the seabed.

According to the scientists, the rocks collected in this dive will help them understand how the Mariana Trench formed and evolved, while marine life samples will contribute to research on the diversity of deep-water creatures, eco-systems and biogeography.

The whole dive lasted 8 hours and 50 minutes, and Jiaolong surfaced at about 4 p.m. local time. The submersible reached its deepest depth of 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in June 2012.
The latest dive was the first of 10 dives planned for the third stage of China’s 38th oceanic expedition.

The third stage mission began on May 16, when the Xiangyanghong 09 ship set sail for the Yap and Mariana trenches in the western Pacific Ocean with the submersible and 96 scientists on board.
Scientists also tested the submersible’s technical and communication equipment, including its mechanical arms, through Tuesday’s dive.

“The submersible’s general technical conditions are stable, and various staff cooperated smoothly, fulfilling the scheduled mission and laying a foundation for deeper dives in the future,” said Wu Changbin, commander of the expedition’s third stage.
A second dive in the trench by Jiaolong is scheduled for Thursday.

Jiaolong (simplified Chinese: 蛟龙号; traditional Chinese: 蛟龍號; pinyin: jiāolóng hào flood dragon) is a Chinese manned deep-sea research submersible that can dive to a depth of over 7,000 m. It has the greatest depth range of any manned research vehicle in the world, the only manned expeditions to have gone deeper were the dives of the Trieste bathyscaphe (10,916m) in 1960, Archimède (9,560 m) in 1962, and the dive of the Deepsea Challenger (10,898m) in 2012, all three diving to Challenger Deep. The general designer is Xu Qinan (徐芑南), a former professor of School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering(船舶与海洋工程学院) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), who also designed many other Chinese submersibles and unmanned underwater vehicles. Xu is now an academician for the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The first deputy general designer is Cui Weicheng (崔维成), and the deputy general designer was Zhu Weiqing (朱维庆).

On June 27, 2012, the Jiaolong with two oceanauts reached a depth of 7,062 meters (23,169 feet) in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.[1] Previously on June 19, 2012, the Jiaolong reached a depth of 6,965 metres (22,851 feet).[2] It had its first test in South China Sea between May 31 and July 18, 2010, reaching a depth of 3,759 metres (12,333 ft) with three crew.[3] On July 22, 2011, Jiaolong reached a depth of 4,027.31 metres (13,213.0 ft) in northeastern Pacific. The five-hour mission included chemical, physical and biological research. 17 dives have been completed.[4][5]

Besides China, other countries that have developed deep-water technology include the United States, France, Russia and Japan.[6][7]
