According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the year 2005 is the Year of the Rooster. The special Year of the Rooster miniature sheet reflecting a R12,05 value was issued on 9 February 2005. A special commemorative envelope was also issued. These products were designed by Denis Murphy.
The rooster is featured standing on a torse, a device used in Heraldry which supports the top figure in the Coat of Arms. Various elements associated with the symbol of the rooster such as the sunrise are incorporated into the background of the miniature sheet.
The design of the commemorative envelope shows the full circle of Zodiac signs with the rooster on top. Within the circle are arranged trigrams (Pa Kua), each of which is associated with seasons, directions, elements and character traits. At the centre is the symbol of “Yin and Yang” denoting positive and negative and also masculine and feminine qualities.
Chinese belief has it that the world is composed of five elements, namely fire, metal, water, wood and earth. The element associated with the sign of the rooster is metal. The rooster is also associated with the colour green.
People born in the year of the rooster are understood to be lively, candid, resourceful, courageous, generous, adventurous, confident, sincere and talented. They tend to be arrogant, nit-picking and also suspicious.
According to Taoist philosophy, the ancient religion of China, in the beginning the cosmos was filled with the Supreme Ultimate. Yin and Yang, the two fundamentals, originated here. They represent female and male, light and dark, day and night, south and north. According to this philosophy everything is always changing, always flowing and nothing is ever static.
All even numbered years have Yang aspects. These include heaven, sky, positive, active, creative and south.

The Serbian Post has issued two stamps celebrating the new year of Dragon.
The Dragon is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar, and the only animal that is legendary. The Dragon is associated with potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, hurricane, and floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good luck.

There’s nothing quite like the experience of a Chinese New Year – a two-week cultural celebration full of colour, energy, and, of course, plenty of fireworks.
To mark the start of the Year of the Dragon, Royal Mail is issuing a limited-edition sheet on 20 January, featuring celebrations by Chinese communities around the UK alongside 10 self-adhesive 1st Class Fireworks stamps.
Stephen Agar, Royal Mail spokesperson, said: “Royal Mail is delighted to be marking the Lunar New Year with this sheet of stamps, to be part of the celebrations that are held in the UK and worldwide.”
London’s Chinatown welcomes visitors with dozens of lanterns and a giant banner, while the famous Chinese Arch is the focus for celebrations in Liverpool. Other cities featured include Cardiff, Glasgow and Belfast.
The sheet also features four large illustrations of blue water dragons winding their way around the outside of the sheet, while a further five different dragons illustrate the symbolic elements of Water, Air, Fire, Metal and Earth.
Those born under the sign of the Dragon share many characteristics. They can be innovative, self-assured and enterprising. They are also brave but do have a tendency to show a quick temper.
London boasts one of the oldest Chinese communities in the UK with records showing some of the earliest settlers in Bow, east London.
Today there are significant Chinese communities in cities all across the country, most notably; London; Manchester; Birmingham; Liverpool; Sheffield and Edinburgh – with most featuring a Chinatown – an area rich in Chinese culture and business. The original Chinatown was situated in Liverpool – however this was destroyed during the Second World War.
In 2010, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimated the number of Chinese born residents in the UK at 111,000.
Cantonese is the predominant language spoken by Chinese living in the UK, followed by Mandarin Chinese and Hakka Chinese.

I want to send my very best wishes to everyone celebrating the Chinese New Year — here in Britain, in China, and all around the world.
This is a very special year for Britain and China. Britain was the first Western country to recognise the People’s Republic of China. And this year we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of full diplomatic ties. Indeed, today Britain’s ties with China are deeper and broader than at any time in our history.
Our trade continues to expand rapidly, with Britain remaining the most open economy in Europe for Chinese investment. There are more Chinese students studying in the UK and more British students in China than ever before. There are even two giant Chinese Pandas in Edinburgh zoo — a great attraction, with people from all over the world going to see them.
And, of course, there are Chinese communities here in Britain making an incredible contribution to our country — from business to culture, from science to local government, everyday showcasing the values of hard work, enterprise and community that make this country what it is.
I hope in this Olympic year for Britain that we can not only build on the success of the Beijing games but also use the opportunity of the games to open up new areas of our relationship; taking advantage of the ways in which our two economies increasingly complement each other, and the growing conversations between our governments and our peoples about the kind of societies we want to be and the kind of world we want to see.
I wish you good fortune — and hope that this year of the dragon can be a year of success for China, for Britain, and for us all.
