Life is unpredictable, and no one can ever know what might happen in his or her life at any moment. I could hardly believe that I would finally leave a peaceful place where innocent, honest children were playing and running around the village and the river with their bare feet, throwing mud at each other, and playing hide and seek under the full moon at night. Looking at the big blue sky, birds were flying over me, thinking sadly that I would leave this place eventually. However, looking back at those memories, I feel so amazed and surprised for possessing a new life in a blink of an eye. Before immigration to the United States, my family and I lived in a refugee camp in Thailand, which is located in the village of Maesurin. Both of my parents were born in Burma. As the whole world knows, Burma is a country full of war, racism, repression, and hatred from the military government. Ninety percent of the public depends on the military government because the government has an absolute authority on its people. In order to survive in Burma, one must work as her or his sweat comes down to her/his toes. Many innocent people are being repressed and mistreated by the military government, which has the full authority over the people. Therefore, my mother decided to leave the country as soon as possible because of the poor economic status, political issues, and mistreatment by the military government. My mother escaped at the age of sixteen, and my father escaped the country with his aunt when he was a child. Before moving to the refugee camp, not only my mother sold food and clothes in order to support the family, but my father was working as a very fine boatman. The reason why my parents had to escape to Thailand was that the Burmese military government ordered its military troops to invade Kaunt Kaunt. Under the inhuman treatment by the military government, many innocent children, women, and men suffered, were murdered, or burnt to death. Moreover, women were raped, shot, or cut by soldiers. At that time, my mother was pregnant with me. The conditions that the country faced were not safe for her. Therefore my father decided to move to the refugee camp. He thought that it would be less challenging than living in Kaunt Kaunt. But they were really wrong because in the refugee camp, my parents were really punished by the government, ate the food that the governments gave and did what they asked for. I was born and raised there for 16 years. I have 4 siblings, which are 2 boys and 2 girls. My parents work really hard in order for us to attend school. I can say that my parents really want us to be talented, educated, and successful in life. Furthermore, refugee camps are not very comfortable or suitable for my family as well as other human beings. I have come to believe that the struggles people face in life should not make them weaker, they should make them more resilient. It consumed my life in school for 16 years. Followed day by day, my life stood alike the robot. Thinking miserably that how my life would be after done my high school of 10th grade. I felt as if I were living in a jail I had a big dream that to go to college in town and take the major that I want to be as a doctor. However, governments were not allowed to go. Because they were thinking that, if they let us go and attend the college, we would smart then them or would not obey their laws anymore. For this point, it’s really made me upset, hated the issue of life in refugee, and think that my life will end in this refugee without clue. However, my parent always encouraged me to not give up and someday, we might have the chance to escape. MMG15-2-0039Not really far, by the grace of god my parent could apply to come to the United State that I never dreamed about before. It felt like I was being born again as I set my feet on the ground in California. However, I praised God for giving me such an amazing opportunity to come to the U.S. with little cost to Jasmine-Fay2my family because things might be totally different from the refugee camp, however, I have known for a long time that America has top educational program for students. As for a newcomer who does not have access to English speaking, my family and I have difficulties whenever we need to go to places such as a hospital, unemployment office, school, and other places. However, I knew that God had already taken us here from Thailand, so that was the time I needed to put forth my best effort to learn English. After one month in San Diego, I could attend the 9th grade in Crawford High. Seeing my parents have working the lives for us in here at minimum wage jobs and looking back the struggle life in refugee camp makes me want to try harder academically in school, to earn good grades and involved in many club as International Rescue Committee after school to get tutoring, join the Peace Maker Group which help me for the public speaking and sharing my background. I also involved in the CAHSEE Prep which prepare me for the CAHSEE. I encourage myself and consider learning the English writing, reading and speaking as fast as I can. For that I now be able to help my family, my community who come from refugee, as a translator in school, clinic, unemployment office and other places. Indeed, there are many Burmese refugees who are unemployed due to their lack of ability to speak English. As I have got help from the whoever helped me, that is always encourage me and make me want to help people and become a successful person as them, and there are many people who I left behind in refugee camp are need help. This is what motivates me to push harder to achieve the goal of becoming a social worker. After graduating high school I will attend a four year college to become a social worker. All my life people have been helping me and my family, now I get the chance to volunteer and help others. After all I have been through and seen in the refugee camp I now know the importance of each and who issue their life in refugee.
