Ancient Romans made world’s ‘most durable’ concrete. We might use it to stop rising seas.
Two thousand years ago, Roman builders constructed vast sea walls and harbor piers. The concrete they used outlasted the empire — and still holds lessons for modern engineers, scientists say.
A bunch of half-sunken structures off the Italian coast might sound less impressive than a gladiatorial colosseum. But underwater, the marvel is in the material. The harbor concrete, a mixture of volcanic ash and quicklime, has withstood the sea for two millennia and counting. What’s more, it is stronger than when it was first mixed.
The Roman stuff is “an extraordinarily rich material in terms of scientific possibility,” said Philip Brune, a research scientist at DuPont Pioneer who has studied the engineering properties of Roman monuments. “It’s the most durable building material in human history, and I say that as an engineer not prone to hyperbole.”
By contrast, modern concrete exposed to saltwater corrodes within decades.

North Korea claims first successful launch of ICBM
4th July 2017, SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea on Tuesday claimed it successfully test-launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile, a potential game-changing development in what may be the world’s most dangerous nuclear standoff and, if true, a direct rebuke to US President Donald Trump’s earlier declaration that such a test “won’t happen!”
In typically heated rhetoric, North Korea’s Academy of Defense Science said the test of an ICBM — the Hwasong-14 — marked the “final step” in creating a “confident and powerful nuclear state that can strike anywhere on Earth.”
Unless outsiders retrieve parts of the missile, it will be difficult to confirm many details. North Korea’s weapons program is perhaps the most closely held state secret in one of the world’s most suspicious nations. US, South Korean and Japanese officials earlier assessed that the North fired an intermediate-range missile into waters near Japan.
http://nypost.com/2017/07/04/north-korea-says-they-have-successfully-launched-icbm/
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga declined to comment on whether Japan thinks it was an ICBM, and South Korea’s Defense Ministry said it was analyzing whether the North’s statement was accurate.

Asia’s Five Most Corrupt Countries
From South Korea’s presidential scandal to Malaysia’s 1MDB fund, not many Asian countries have been able to avoid the smear of corruption. But just how pervasive is the problem across the continent?
An 18-month long survey by Transparency International reveals there is much work to be done. After talking to more than 20,000 people in 16 countries, regions and territories in Asia Pacific, the report found more than one in four people have paid a bribe when using a public service.
While that statistic looks at the entire region, the numbers for some individual countries are staggering—and suggest corruption is deeply-rooted in everyday life.
5. Myanmar: 40% bribery rate
Despite a 2013 Anti-Corruption Law, about half of the respondents believe that most or all police are corrupt, and 40% believe the judiciary is corrupt. But things might be getting better—at least in the eyes of the people. Less than a fourth believe corruption has increased over the last year.

4. Pakistan: 40% bribery rate
3. Thailand: 41% bribery rate
2. Vietnam: 65% bribery rate
1. India: 69% bribery rate

In G20 Photo, Trump Couldn’t Shove His Way to the Front And Center of World Leaders
By Jason Le Miere On 7/7/17 at 10:05 AM
We all know that President Donald Trump likes to get prime position in any photo opportunity. On his first visit to Europe in May, he appeared to shove the prime minister of Montenegro aside in order to get to the front of the pack of world leaders, providing yet another viral sensation for the internet.
Unfortunately for Trump, he was unable to use the same tactics in Hamburg Friday as he posed for his first G20 photo. Instead, Trump was left on the outside looking in, to the far right of the group, only prevented from being on the very outer limits by French President Emmanuel Macron, who made a late move to stand next to the American leader.

In Japan, so few people are having sex the population is plunging
July 11, 201710:21am
THERE’S a somewhat delicate problem in Japan.
How can we put this? There’s not enough nooky in Nagasaki or coupling in Kyoto. In Tokyo, two aren’t becoming one as much as is needed.
In fact, the reluctance of the Japanese to hop into bed is such a problem, it’s having a dramatic effect on the nation’s population, which plummeted more than 300,000 to 125.6m last year.
In contrast, the population of Australia increased 372,000 in 2016 to 24 million people.
Every one minute and 23 seconds a new person, through birth or migration, arrives in Australia, according to the Australian Bureau for Statistics.
One of the factors behind Japan’s population decline is it’s relatively low levels of immigration.
But a nationwide attack of bashfulness isn’t helping, with young Japanese people barely dating or copulating.
In the country that gave us the love hotel and vending machines full of knickers, nearly half of 18-34-year-olds are still virgins. Sixty-four per cent have never had a relationship, according to research cited by the BBC.
The reasons varied for the wariness about going all the way but included a lack of self-esteem, fear of rejection, all consuming hobbies and the ease of accessing pornography online.
Young people also said that once that left the strict confines of home, rather than having sex, they embraced freedom by drinking with their mates.
“Sex is something I don’t need,” one young woman told the BBC. Another claimed men didn’t try hard enough to attract women.
And that’s a big problem for Japan, which has one the world’s lowest growth rates according to the CIA World fact book.
Figures from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare show births in Japan fell below one million newborns last year for the first time.
The number of foreigners did rise in the country, by seven per cent to 2.3m. This was driven by increasing labour shortages — not surprising in a country with declining population and seniors making up a rising proportion of the total number.
Japan has been reluctant to increase immigration levels in the country but may now have to rethink that policy to boost its population.
If action isn’t taken, the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research estimates that by 2045, the population of Japan will fall by about 900,000 people a year. That’s the equivalent of two cities the size of Canberra disappearing annually.
China makes up the number one source of foreign citizens in Japan at around 700,000 people.
In Australia, Chinese-born people total 500,000 people. The number one nation for immigrants to Australia remains Britain with over one million people having emigrated Down Under.
Although, even Australia’s growth rate isn’t exactly enthusiastic easily outstripped by a slew of nations in Africa and the Middle East.

China sends troops to Djibouti, establishes first overseas military base
By Brad Lendon and Steve George, CNN

US ‘strategic interests’
China joins the US, France and Japan, among others, with permanent bases in Djibouti, a former French colony with a population of less than one million residents.
Though small in both population and size, Djibouti’s position on the tip of the Horn of Africa offers strategic access to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The strait, which is only 18 miles wide at its narrowest point, connects the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean beyond.
One of the world’s most important sea lanes, millions of barrels of oil and petroleum products pass through the strait daily, according to GlobalSecurity.org.

These animals can survive until the end of the Earth, astrophysicists say
By Ben Guarino July 14
Tardigrades, also known as the water bear, are microscopic animals, which can survive in many extreme conditions, including space. (Taylor Turner/The Washington Post)
Tardigrades have a reputation as the toughest animals on the planet. Some of these microscopic invertebrates shrug off temperatures of minus 272 Celsius, one degree warmer than absolute zero. Other species can endure powerful radiation and the vacuum of space. In 2007, the European Space Agency sent 3,000 animals into low Earth orbit, where the tardigrades survived for 12 days on the outside of the capsule.
To a group of theoretical physicists, tardigrades were the perfect specimens to test life’s tenacity. “Life is pretty fragile if all your estimates are based on humans or dinosaurs,” said David Sloan, a theoretical cosmologist at Oxford University in Britain.
The tardigrade lineage is ancient. “Tardigrade microfossils are reported from the Early Cambrian to the Early Cretaceous, 520 million to 100 million years ago,” said Ralph O. Schill, an expert on tardigrades at the University of Stuttgart in Germany who was not involved with this research. “They have seen the dinosaurs come and go.”

US to Myanmar: Cut Pyongyang ties
22 Jul 2017 at 20:35 9,322 viewed10 comments
WRITER: REUTERS
YANGON: Myanmar’s military has maintained ties with North Korea, even though the civilian-led government denies any cooperation, and the Trump administration is pressing for a complete break of all remaining links, current and former US officials say.
Washington made its case to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and the army chief, Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing, during a visit to the country this week by the US special envoy for North Korea.
Joseph Yun’s trip underlined continuing US worries over North Korean links that date back to Myanmar’s decades of military rule, according to a senior US State Department official.
“It was an opportunity to send a message that any engagement with North Korea, particularly military engagement, is counterproductive to trying to end this threat that North Korea poses to the region and to the globe,” the official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

We only have a 5 percent chance of avoiding ‘dangerous’ global warming, a study finds

The research finds that the median warming is likely to be 3.2 degrees Celsius, and further concludes that there’s only a 5 percent chance that the world can hold limiting below 2 degrees Celsius and a mere 1 percent chance that it can be limited below 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit)
