YANGON, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) — Myanmar surgeons have successfully separated the fifth conjoined twin baby girls, official media reported Thursday.

The surgical operation by Dr. Htoo Han and his assistants was performed on the two-year-and-one-month-old conjoined twins named Ma Ingyin Khaing and Ma Ingyin Hlaing in the Children’s Hospital in Yangon Wednesday, according to the New Light of Myanmar daily.

The separated twins, who are under extensive care in the hospital, are from Kawtin village in Laungton township in southern Tanintharyi region.

Myanmar surgeons had carried out four successful similar surgical operations on twins in the past over two decades.

The fourth twins, who are also baby girls named So Pyay Lin and So Pyay Win with their chests joined together, were successfully separated in October 2009.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) — Doctors in a Shanghai hospital successfully separated twin girls joined at breast and abdomen after nearly six hours of surgery on Monday, and both girls are in a stable condition.
The twin girls, named “An An” and “Xin Xin”, were born in late April this year, with their livers and heart-sac connected, according to Liu Jinfen, director of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, where the surgery was conducted.
The operation started at 9 a.m. and four groups of doctors operated at the same time. “We separated their hearts and livers, reshaped their breast bones and remodeled their breasts with titanium-alloy plates,” Liu said after the operation.
The conjoined twin girls were transferred to ICU in Shanghai Children’s Medical Center two hours after their birth at 4.89 kg.
After four months of comprehensive nursing, the twin girls, at 10 kg, were ready for the operation, Liu said.
“The operation is challenging, but we made it,” Liu said, adding that further intensive care and treatment is crucial for the girls’ health.
The two girls might rely on breathing machine for a long time, Liu said.

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) — At eight months old, Joshua and Jacob Spates, conjoined twins from Tennessee, U.S., were finally separated after a successful 13-hour surgery, according to Reuters report Thursday.
The twin boys, connected at the spine, recovered in a Memphis hospital Wednesday, two weeks after the separation surgery on August 29.
The twins are the first successfully separated conjoined twins documented in Memphis and one of the two dozens in the world, ABC News reported.
A 34-member pediatric surgical team, led by Dr. Max Langham, spent 13 hours separating the brothers’ spinal column bone, nerves and muscles and completing gastrointestinal repairs.
The twins were joined back-to-back at the pelvis and lower spine, but they had their own hearts, heads, and limbs, so they are “two different boys,” said Adrienne Spates, mother of the twins.
After the surgery, the boys were not only healthy, both of them could also use their legs and crawl out of bed, said Langham.
“Joshua’s doing great, and hopefully he’ll be up and going and have a pretty normal lifespan,” Langham said, but Jacob still had to accept treatments and undergo surgeries for he had heart problems.
The twins are lucky. “Most conjoined twins don’t ever get a chance to get to separation because they die from complications at delivery,” said Langham.
Conjoined twins are very rare. It occurs in one of 100,000 births, and one of every 200,000 live births, according to reports.
