The Derwent Dam in the Upper Derwent Valley was completed in 1916 and is one of three dams in the valley. The reservoirs were established by the Derwent Valley Water Board to supply water to Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield,

This intake, together with those on Langden and Hareden Brooks further down the Trough of Bowland, was built in the 1920s by Preston Corporation Waterworks (later Preston and District Water Board, which was absorbed into North West Water, now United Utilities).

Water is abstracted from Losterdale Brook here (I don’t know the quantities or proportions of flow), ultimately to supply the city of Preston. Combined abstractions from the Trough’s three intakes are carried by aqueducts (pipes!) to the Alston Reservoirs near Longridge.

The surrounding trees are Crag Wood.
