The lights dimmed, a gong sounded, and the Chingay Parade 2012 opened with a blaze of torchbearers, fire pots and pyrotechnics.

Excitement filled the air as thousands of spectators watched and cheered the grand opening from their seats at the Pit Building.

The parade, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has managed to draw spectators both old and new to the massive colour-filled spectacular.

Friday night’s guest of honour, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, arrived by carriage as he made his way down a specially constructed 360m waterway accompanied by 330 multi-ethnic dancers and a chorus of sound effects
