Jeremy Lin: Even Kobe bows to his star power

Jeremy Lin: Even Kobe bows to his star power – NBA – Yahoo! Sports

NEW YORK – Somehow, the most improbable story in NBA history found himself in the most improbable place on Friday night: The ball in his hands, Madison Square Garden on its feet, and the fourth quarter genius of Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant determined to obliterate this burgeoning mythology. Out of Bryant, had come a barrage: twisted, contorted fades, a self-pass off the backboard, the A-list arsenal out of the world’s most gifted scorer.

Somehow, Jeremy Lin never flinched. Somehow, Jeremy Lin never let himself become a spectator, never stopped to wonder what in the world he was doing out here. The ball was so safe, so snug, in his hands. There was such an easy effortlessness to the downright diabolical manner with which he dismantled the Lakers and Bryant. Sheer hysteria had thundered down on the Garden floor, a phenomenon called Linsanity, and the most polished, most poised, presence happened to be Lin.

This kid out of nowhere – out of Harvard University, out of the Reno Bighorns and Erie Bayhawks – had done it again, done it with a devastating 38 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in the Knicks’ 92-85 victory over the Lakers.

“Players don’t come out of nowhere,” Bryant said.

What he was trying to say was this: The talent’s there, but sometimes the opportunity isn’t. It takes the right circumstances and timing, the right coach, right system. And sometimes, it takes desperation to try anything. And for these New York Knicks, well, Jeremy Lin constituted anything.

[ Related: Jeremy Lin’s Ivy League roots ]

Four games, four victories for these Knicks. Four games, and he’s transformed these Knicks in a way that no one can fully describe, fully believe. Bryant has made a career out of torching the Knicks, leaving the Garden to ovations. He’s scored 50 points here, even 60.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Bryant had been bemused over this Lin story. He wanted details, wanted to know the fuss. “Well, he’s got to deal with me now,” Bryant said. Somehow, Lin did. Another crescendo for him, another staggering performance in a week where he had gone for 25 points and seven assists, 28 and eight and 23 and 10.

Here came the Lakers, and here was Lin popping 3-pointers and twisting layups and free throw upon clutch free throw. Here came Lin to stop Kobe, and yes, stop the NBA cold.

“I don’t know what to tell you,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni marveled. “I have never seen this. What he’s doing is amazing.”

It isn’t the scoring with Lin. No one in the history of the NBA has scored as much in his first three starts, but this has nothing to do with the statistics. It’s the feel, the touch, the spirit and the purity of it all. No Amar’e Stoudemire. No Carmelo Anthony. And it doesn’t matter what spare parts are thrown together with Lin because he’s elevated everyone, transformed five fingers into a fist.

“It’s a completely different team,” center Tyson Chandler said. “You can’t look at this team the same.”…..

“A great story,” Bryant said. “It’s a testament to perseverance and hard work. A good example for kids everywhere.”….

This was Bryant’s grudging show of respect, his way of acknowledging this kid had become worth seeking a measure of revenge. The greatest player on the planet had come to obliterate the mythology of Jeremy Lin, and only played a part in growing it. Everyone left Madison Square Garden a little dazed on Friday night, a little stunned and perhaps no one so much as Jeremy Lin himself…..

Jeremy Lin flies in face of conventional wisdom

Jeremy Lin flies in face of conventional wisdom

— Good stuff this week from Sports Illustrated’s Phil Taylor, who lives just a few miles from Palo Alto High School and first noticed Lin back in 2005. “I remember lots of opposing guards contorting their faces in a mixture of surprise and disgust after he flashed past them to the hoop,” wrote Taylor, “as if they couldn’t decide if they were more shocked or angry that this skinny Asian kid had used them like an orange traffic cone.”

Taylor recalled that as Lin drifted on the fringe of NBA relevance, “I knew that part of the reason Lin was so quickly dismissed was that people had a hard time believing than an Asian-American could play point guard in the NBA. I missed on him, too. I didn’t question the conventional wisdom, even though it didn’t go along with what I saw with my own eyes.”

— They say Lin can’t go to his left. Run that by the Wizards’ John Wall, frozen by Lin’s crossover dribble (and ensuing dunk) last week.

— They say he can’t shoot. At the very least, as he proved in that 38-point outburst against the Lakers, Lin can be a streak shooter of the highest order.

— They say he’ll be flustered by a double-team. The Lakers tried that for a while, but soon abandoned the idea. Lin can expect more such treatment, but as a general tenet, it’s absurd to double-team the point guard. If he has any court sense, and teammates who can score, he’ll burn you more often than not.

Move over Yao Ming, China’s newest basketball hero is … Jeremy Lin?

Lin, a former Harvard star who went undrafted out of college, gives up 14 inches

and roughly a hundred pounds to Yao, the former No. 1 draft pick and recently

retired center of the NBA’s Houston Rockets. He’s also an American by birth, the

California-raised son of Taiwanese immigrants.

The basketball world is stirring after two breakout games by New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. The first Chinese-American player in the NBA, Lin has averaged 26.5 points and 7.5 assists in his last two games, both Knicks wins.

Lin’s exuberance seems to be just what the Knicks needed as the Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI victory threatened to overshadow Carmelo Anthony and company completely. But the Harvard product has a ways to go before he can crack the list of notable Asian-American athletes

New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin wrote another chapter to his incredible story this weekend. This time, he outdueled Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers and guided the Knicks to a fourth straight win.

This was Lin’s fourth start for the Knicks and his team has not lost during that stretch. Lin beat Derek Fisher on this play. The Taiwanese-American faced his biggest challenge and the Knicks took a 49-41 lead into the second half.

Your Turn, Canada: A Second-by-Second Look at Jeremy Lin Lighting Up Toronto

Every day, we seem to learn something new about Jeremy Lin. Here’s the latest, a basketball scouting report for the opposition: if Lin has the ball at the top of the key, and the game is on the line, do not, under any circumstances, let him shoot it.

Lin did it again. In Toronto on Tuesday night, with the game tied 87-87, rookie Knicks guard Iman Shumpert missed a pull-up jump shot with a little over 20 seconds left. But Knicks center Tyson Chandler grabbed the offensive rebound and tossed it out to Lin, standing near half-court. The Knicks would take the last shot.

But would Lin pull the trigger? He already had a productive night against the Raptors — 24 points and 11 assists, though he also committed eight turnovers. His driving layup a minute earlier had tied the game……

Three seconds. Calderon takes a step back. Stupid: with such little time left, if Lin attacks the basket, he’ll only have time to fire up a desperate layup. And the defense can come over to help, because Lin won’t have time to pass it out to an open shooter.

(MORE: Linsanity Heads East, Linfects China and Taiwan)

Sensing Calderon’s misstep, Lin sets himself and fires. Lin doesn’t have a pure outside shot, but, man, his ball hangs high in the air, like a lazy fly ball to center field. On this night, that gave the millions of fans caught up in Linsanity plenty of time to think this through. The Knicks had trailed by 17 points in the first quarter and by 12 in the fourth. No [expletive] way he’s going to do this again.

Bang. The ball clips the back of the rim and falls right through. Lin runs down court, chest-bumps with teammate Jared Jeffries. Steve Novak, Landry Fields and all the minds of millions of people captivated by Lin’s amazing run rush over to hug him……

New York’s love affair with Jeremy Lin only got steamier on Valentine’s Day.

At Stout, an Irish pub on 33rd Street about half a block from Madison Square Garden, cheers rang out and arms were thrust triumphantly into the air Tuesday night after Lin made the winning three-point shot with half a second to play, lifting the New York Knicks to a 90-87 victory over Toronto at Air Canada Centre.

“S-A-T! S-A-T!” chanted a group of Taiwanese American and Chinese American friends and family who had gathered around a table to watch the game, alluding to Lin’s Ivy League pedigree as a Harvard graduate.

The smartest guy on the court was also the most dynamic; the Knicks point guard had not only led his team to six consecutive victories but also galvanized a community in the process.

Alan Ma, 30, a city planner from Queens, said he had gathered with his cousins four times in the previous week to watch Lin — one more time than they had seen each other the entire previous year.

“To see an actual live Asian American hero unfold before our eyes, it really is something special to us,” said Jerry Ma, 36, a Taiwanese American who works for a company that creates Asian American superhero characters. “It means a lot more than anyone could ever imagine.”…

Jeremy Lin Hits Game-Winning Shot To Lead Knicks Over Raptors (VIDEO)

TORONTO — Even after his amazing week, this one took Linsanity to a whole new level. Against Toronto on Tuesday, it was Lin for the win!
Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with less than a second to play to cap his finishing flurry of six straight points and New York rallied to beat the Raptors 90-87, extending its winning streak to six games.
“I’m just glad it went like this so we can calm the Linsanity down,” cracked Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni.
No chance of that. The NBA’s first American-Taiwanese player, Lin scored 27 points and added a career-high 11 assists in his first game since being named Eastern Conference player of the week.
“He continues to impress every night,” New York’s Jared Jeffries said. “Every game he plays better, he does more and more to help us win basketball games. You can’t ask any more of a kid coming into this situation.”
While he’s the one standing in the spotlight, Lin said sharing success with his teammates is as big a reward.
“It’s not because of me, it’s because we’re coming together as a team,” Lin said. “We started making these steps earlier but we were still losing close games and so obviously it wasn’t fun. But when you win, that solves a lot of problems. We’ve been winning and we’ve been playing together.”

Making just his fifth career start, Lin had no hesitation in taking the decisive shot.
“I’m thankful that the coach and my teammates trust me with the ball at the end of the game,” he said. “I like having it at the end of the game. I’m just very thankful.”
