BUDDHA’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS X – AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

PERTH, AUSTRALIA CELEBRATIONS

IMAGINE AN ABBESS TEACHING MEDITATION CLASSES (IN ENGLISH) TO NON BUDDHIST CAUCASIAN WOMEN AND MEN! YOU NEED TO HAVE FLUENCY IN ENGLISH AND PATIENCE. FOR THIS SPECIAL AUDIENCE, YOU NEED TO PRODUCE RESULTS, NO BLUFFING AROUND. NOT EASY.

EXAMPLE: IN A BIRTHDAY FLYER SOME YEARS AGO, AN AZUSA MONK WROTE THAT MONKS FASTED (“OO BOT SAUNK”). FOR THAT REASON, HE CLAIMED THAT MONKS WERE NOBLER (“MYINT MYAT”) THAN LAY PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T. IN MY OPINION, THIS LINE OF THINKING WOULD GO NOWHERE WITH A CAUCASIAN AUDIENCE.

YOU COULD CLAIM “NOBILITY” ALL DAY LONG. WHO CARES?

THEY WON’T KNEEL DOWN AND WORSHIP YOU FOR THAT.

INSTEAD OF SPREADING THE DHARMA, IT SEEMED THE MONK WAS JUST TRYING TO “GLORIFY AND ENNOBLE” HIMSELF FIRST.

QUESTIONS:

DO YOU KNOW THAT BUDDHA’S VINAYA SAYS A MONK CANNOT PRAISE ONESELF? IT’S BREAKING THE VINAYA RULES.

DO YOU KNOW THAT VINAYA DOES NOT ALLOW MONKS WHO HAVE ATTAINED SUPERNORMAL POWERS TO SAY THAT THEY HAVE SUCH SUPERNORMAL POWERS?

(GOOGLE “VINAYA/MONK RULES” AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF).

BTW, EVEN IF HE WAS NOBLE AS HE CLAIMED TO BE, JUST WORSHIPPING A “NOBLE” MONK WON’T ACHIEVE ANYTHING.

WHY?

BUDDHA ONCE TOLD A LAY WOMAN NOT TO JUST WORSHIP HIM. HE TOLD HER THAT SHE NEEDED TO CRITIQUE AND UNDERSTAND HIS TEACHINGS AND THEN TO PUT THEM INTO  PRACTICE.

LAY PEOPLE DON’T RESPECT THOSE WHO TOOT THEIR OWN HORNS (“KO LET KHA MAUNN, KO KHAT”).

I recently bought a manual Canon 50mm f1.4 FD lens to use with my Canon 500D, and found that the event being held at Brisbane for Buddha’s birthday was a good excuse to go out and test it.

KATEI is a young classically trained violinist who is recognised as one of Asia’s most exuberant and unconventional performers that even has Beethoven rocking in his grave.

As a tribute to the 15th anniversary of the Buddha Birth Day Festival in the picturesque Parklands at South Bank, KATEI is making two guest performances at this the worlds largest annual celebration of Buddha’s birthday.

There’s a very special birthday being celebrated in Brisbane as Buddha was born 2572 years ago.

Street dancing, kung-fu classes, and world famous performers feature as part of the Buddha Birthday Festival which started at Brisbane’s South Bank and continues through the weekend.

Buddha Day Festival – Scary Singing – Auckland, New Zealand, April 2010

My ears bled, but it was nice 🙂

(ACTUALLY, IT WAS CHINESE OPERA SINGING – HE SHOULD HAVE DONNED HIS COSTUME.

IN ANCIENT BURMESE SONGS, WE HAVE SIMILAR SAD AND SORROWFUL SONGS LIKE “NGO CHINN SHAY,” “BAW LARE,” “LWANN CHINN” SONGS – THEY MAY SOUND STRANGE OR DISTURBING TO WESTERN EARS)
