Chinese high-speed railways are an exceedingly comfortable way to travel.

Most cities have built new train stations to accommodate the high-speed trains. These stations are all clean modern architecture. In the larger cities, they might feel more like airports, but somehow even larger and more spacious than airports. There will be some shops and restaurants but not as many as you might find in an airport. Then again, there will be shops nearby in the surrounding streets.

The facilities are brand spanking new and well maintained. The high-speed rail is one of the points of pride of the nation and they do keep it up to standard. That said, even the regular trains in China are maintained to a high standard. The regular trains might be old and dated but they are well staffed and clean. The staff throughout the network are well trained and diligent.

Rail manufacturer set to upgrade Malaysian facilities

Chinese rail vehicle manufacturer CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive will upgrade its facilities in Malaysia this year as it looks to win the service contract for the upcoming Singapore-Malaysia high-speed rail project, its chairman said.

China Railway and China Railway Signal and Communication sent teams to Singapore in December in the hopes of beating international rivals from Japan, South Korea and Germany to win the project.

The 350-kilometer high-speed railway between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, first proposed in 2013, is considered a game-changer. By linking the two major Southeast Asian countries, the railway will shorten the travel time between the two capitals from four hours to 90 minutes

China on August 31 donated locomotives, passenger coaches and freight coaches to Myanmar’s Ministry of Railway Transportation in a ceremony held at Yangon Railway Station, according to a report in the New Light of Myanmar.

The donation consisted of 225 railway carriages, including five locomotives, 20 passenger coaches and 200 freight coaches, which were first offered by China during the 5th China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning in October 2008, said a report in Xinhua.

The New Light reported that the donation was the second of its type by China to Myanmar. The first, in 2006, consisted of 130 passenger coaches.

The passenger coaches “will be used on the Yangon-Mandalay express railways section, freight coaches (open) for upgrading railways and new railways projects, and freight coaches for Yangon-Mandalay, Yangon-Mawlamyine, Mandalay-Myitkyina and Mandalay-Lashio railways section for ensuring the swift flow of commodities,” the report said.

YANGON – The Myanmar railway authorities are making efforts to boost the railway sector of the country with loans from China and India, a local media reported Wednesday.
For the coming fiscal year 2012-13 starting April, $155 million of loans obtained from the two neighbors will be used in purchasing new goods wagon, locomotives and passenger coaches from these countries to replace the outdated ones, said the Popular News.
Better services will be offered along with the increase of train fare, a railway official was quoted as saying.
Besides China and India, Myanmar has also been purchasing locomotives from France, Germany and Japan.
According to an earlier report, the state-run Myanmar Railway was operating 27 locomotive repairing factories, 52 passenger coach maintaining factories, and the Myit Nge passenger coach and goods wagon factory.
With about 130,000 passengers depending on rail transport in Yangon daily, the city circular trains are running about 200 rounds a day.

Of the various types of trains running in Myanmar, there are 1, 252 passenger coaches, of which four-decade-old ones accounted for 32 percent. Of the 3,311 goods wagons, 40-year-old ones took 56 percent and out of 386 locomotives, 30-year-old ones represented 47 percent.
According to statistics, the length of Myanmar’s railroad has reached 5,726 kilometers (km) with 2,844 km more under construction.
Meanwhile, 475 km more railways are set to be implemented in the future, aimed at narrowing the development gap between the urban and rural areas and promoting socio-economic development.
Myanmar has steadily expanded its railway network in the last two decades, from 3,161 km in 1988 to 5,403 km in 2010.

A superfast railway will connect Myanmar’s cities, cutting the journey time from Muse, Shan State, to Yangon to one hour. That was the claim made by China’s consul general in a recent meeting in Mandalay.

Wang Zongying was discussing China’s One Belt One Road project, which is intended to link China to the countries of Asia, and which would have particular implications for Myanmar. Work has already begun on the rail link that is to connect Ruili, in Yunnan province, to Thailand via Lashio, Mandalay, Yangon and Mawlamyine, said Mr Wang. He was speaking at Mandalay’s Pu Jin Chinese temple on November 27.

“This will be an Asian continental railroad that will connect Kunming and Ruili in Yunnan province with Thailand and Malaysia via Myanmar. Work has already begun on the rail link between Kunming and Ruili, and work is proceeding on the Lu Zen tunnel,” said Mr Wang.

“We want to connect Southeast Asia with a trans-Asia railroad that will go as far as Indonesia and Singapore, and we look forward to cooperation from the countries concerned,” he told The Myanmar Times. China was devoting great attention to questions of cost, he said.

 

He told the audience that the train would eventually reach a speed of 350kph, cutting the journey time from Muse to Yangon to an hour.

China-Myanmar Friendship Association chair U Poe Myint said the One Belt One Road project could bring China and Southeast Asia closer together, stimulating trade, creating jobs and developing the economy.

The project eventually envisages extending as far as Australia, Russia and Europe.

Mr Wang said the governments concerned had been gathering information and negotiating for the past three years. “The first success was the railway that connects China and Pakistan. There are also pipelines and railways that connect Russia and Central Asia that are already in operation. There is progress in the discussions with Australia and New Zealand, and an agreement with Malaysia to build a harbour, and with Thailand to dig a canal.”
