World’s largest hydropower project hits full capacity. The Three Gorges Dam in China’s Hubei meets water storage goals after the summer flooding season, restoring water level to its highest designed mark of 175 meters.
The Three Gorges project is a multi-functional water control system, consisting of a dam 2,309 meters long and 185 meters high, a five-tier ship lock and 26 hydropower turbo-generators.
The project generates electricity, controls flooding by storing excess water and helps regulate the river’s shipping capacity.

Well, there you go! Everyone in the US has heard of this project, but always in terms of disaster, ecological disaster, making people move, it’s going to kill everyone! Then when it started to go into service coverage became much less, and now that it’s got full function we have nothing to say. The more I read about this project, the more impressive it is! I never get tired of giant infrastructure projects, I have to say. A big public sector and a consultative style of government with a long view seems to have some advantages.

Jiangsu Shipyard

The insatiable appetite for bulker newbuilds continued into last week as brokers reported orders for at least 14 bulker newbuilds being ordered.
The Chinese shipyards were the preferred choice for owners, with Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group scoring a huge chunk of placed orders.

Namely, aside to Navibulgar’s order for up to six 45,000 DWT bulkers World Maritime News reported on last week, Yangzijiang has secured orders for up to six more bulkers.
According to Intermodal Research and Valuations, Japanese Lepta Shipping has ordered one 180,000 DWT bulker from the yard and has an option to add one more vessel of the same size to its ordering tally. In addition, Norwegian Kumar has placed an order for two firm plus two optional 180,000 DWT Capesizes at the yard.
The three orders will keep the yard busy for the following two years, as the new ships are slated to start delivery in 2019 and continuing into 2020.
Chinese shipyard Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) has been linked to an order for two Ultramax bulkers of 61,000 DWT placed by Singaporean Eastern Pacific. The company is said to be paying USD 24 million per ship, scheduled to join their owner in 2019.

Two more bulker orders have been tied to Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS). Based on the data from Intermodal, Chinese Foremost Group exercised options for two 180,000 DWT bulkers at the yard, which are also set for delivery in 2019.
Since the beginning of the second half of this year, shipowners have ramped up dry bulk ordering, bringing the newbuild count to 110 new ships from July to September 2017.
The number has almost doubled when compared to 63 newbuilding orders from the first half of this year, according to the data from VesselsValue.

Wuhan Shipyard

On July 18th, 2015, the independent tank was lift in N0.3 cabin successfully for 12800 asphalt vessel by Qingshan Shipyard. It is the biggest independent tank of the vessel, the length is 22.3m, the breadth is 16.2m, the height is 9.3m and the dead load is 335.7t.

The vessel has four independent tanks and eight liquid tanks with internal heating coil. The Max temperature for the carrying goods can be 200℃ , and it also can transfer the pitch and the petroleum which the flash point is bigger than 60℃ .

CMA CGM Confirms CSSC Yards for 22,000 TEU Giants
French shipping firm CMA CGM and CSSC Group have officially signed the contract for the construction of nine 22,000 TEU ships, the largest container vessels ordered so far.
With the contract, signed on September 19 in Marseille, the company confirmed that the Chinese shipyards Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS) will be building the container ships.

Earlier reports suggested that, under a letter of intent (LOI) signed with the shipyards, CSSC Hudong-Zhonghua would be in charge of constructing five ships from the batch, while Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding would be entrusted with building the remaining four units.
CMA CGM unveiled the order earlier in September as part of its second quarter financial report, saying that the contract was placed “in order to keep pace with market growth and the group’s needs.”
“This order, of which the first ships will come into service from the end of 2019, will further reduce unit transport costs, particularly on the Asia-Europe routes,” the company informed.
The contract is estimated to be worth USD 1.2 billion.

WUHAN, China — Honda Motor will build a roughly 3 billion yuan ($435 million) auto plant here, restarting Chinese investment amid a wave of demand.
The Japanese carmaker said Thursday that it aims to start production during the first half of 2019 at the site in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Plans for a new Chinese factory had been halted last autumn as the economy flagged. Now, amid brisk sales growth, Honda decided the climate looks right for fresh capital spending.
The plant will start out with a production capacity of 120,000 vehicles, lifting Honda’s overall capacity in China by slightly more than 10% to 1.25 million units. This will mark its first new auto factory in the country since one in Guangzhou began operations in September 2015. It will be Honda’s sixth factory in China and its third in Wuhan, where some 2,000 additional employees will join the current force of around 9,800.
“This year, Honda’s sales in China will hit 1.2 million vehicles,” an enthusiastic Honda President Takahiro Hachigo told reporters here Thursday — a new record and up 20% on the year. “There’s healthy demand out there, and we’re going to meet people’s expectations.”
Buoyed by a small-vehicle tax break, Honda has scored hits in China with its XR-V compact sport utility vehicle and other models. Sales in the country shot up 40% last month.
But with the break expiring within the year, “there could be some degree of contraction in the market as a whole next year,” warned Yasuhide Mizuno, chief operating officer for China. Even so, Honda expects its sales in China next year to surpass those of this year, Mizuno said.

Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Ltd, the largest supplier of optical preform and fiber in the world, has seen its production efficiency rise sharply thanks to its intelligent manufacturing program.

The speed of fiber drawing has reached 3,000 meters per minute, up 38.9 percent compared with 2012, when the company launched its first advanced manufacturing program. “YOFC aims to grow into one of the major solution providers in the industry,” said Yan. “Our focus in the next three to five years will be offering sophisticated solutions for the interconnection of fiber and cable in data centers.”

The next challenge for YOFC is to increase the interconnection of different fiber drawing towers through an intelligent networking system.

Jiang Xueqin, deputy principal at the Tsinghua University High School in Beijing, told CNN that Shanghai’s education system invests in teaching staff by offering training and high salaries.
“The teachers are very well-paid, very professional,” Jiang said. “The Shanghai government will spend a lot of resources in making sure that each teacher is well trained, has opportunities to go abroad, (and) has opportunities to learn from the best teachers.”

Other countries whose performance improved in PISA this year, such as Brazil, Colombia and Poland, have implemented policies to raise the quality of teaching staff by increasing requirements for education licenses, providing incentives for high-achieving students to enter the profession and ongoing on-the-job training, according to the report.
Jiang also told CNN that Shanghai’s success is a product of a culture that prioritizes academic achievements over other pursuits.
“A lot of it is that the students are engaged in learning. The parents, the students, the community are engaged in making sure their child succeeds,” he said.
