The Leshan Giant Buddha was built during the Tang Dynasty (618–907AD). It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. It is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world[1] and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world. The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It was not damaged by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

Being a country with over a billion population, transport and utility systems would be in a massive scale like no other country ever experienced. These are China’s mega-projects with world records.

Largest Power Station: Three Gorges Dam.
That also automatically makes it the largest hydroelectric power station on the planet—with maximum output capacity of 22,500 MW from 34 giant turbines. It took nine years long of construction with a staggering 27.6 billion USD, replacing Itaipú Dam that sits in the second place.

The Si Du River Bridge (Siduhe Bridge, 四渡河特大桥) in China is the highest bridge in the world. The distance from the bridge to the bottom of the steep gorge is 472 m (1,549 ft).
Please note that the Royal Gorge Bridge in America is 955 feet (291 m) high,
and the Millau Viaduct is 890 ft (271 m) in height.

Highest Bridge: Sidu River Bridge.
This is the world’s highest bridge by a maximum vertical drop distance from deck which is about 496 m (1,627 ft). Commissioned in November 2009 with construction cost of 720 million Yuan. Located in southern part of China with plenty of deep gorges and steep hills, many similar rails and highway bridges were highly ranked in this category.

Longest Railway Tunnel: Guangzhou Metro Line 3.
Commissioned in 2010 after 5 years of construction, it is longer only by 3.3 km (2 mi) of that newly opened Gotthard Base Tunnel in second place. However there are longer tunnels but most of them function as water transfer.

Pushing the limits to how large cities can be, China is set to merge 9 cities into one by 2017. However, China has much more planned. The 632 meter Shanghai Tower will tower over Shanghai while a worlds new tallest called Sky City is proposed for completion within a year!

By now, China has merged nine of its cities into one, creating the largest metropolitan area on the planet. This new megacity has a population of 42 million – over 7 million greater than Tokyo, the previous record holder.
The cities being merged include Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the second and third largest cities in China with populations of 11.7 million and 8.9 million, respectively. This region covers much of China’s manufacturing heartland, accounting for nearly a tenth of the Chinese economy.
Around 150 major infrastructure projects have meshed the transport, energy, water and telecommunications networks of these nine cities together, at a cost of some 2 trillion yuan ($304 billion). An express railway line connects the hub with nearby Hong Kong.*
By the end of the decade, even larger megacities are emerging, with city zones of up to 100 million people.
